“E” “I” to reflect true International nature of the group
Discussions at EPPOG meetings this year to expand membership and play a more prominent role in worldwide particle-physics outreach
Draft document at: https://cms-docdb.cern.ch/cgi-bin/PublicEPPOGDocDB/ShowDocument?docid=200
summarizes history of EPPOG & proposed evolution discussed at October EPPOG meeting
endorsed by EPPOG

EPPOG IPPOG Overview
Dave Barney + Michael Kobel, ECFA Plenary Nov. 2010
3
Potential for Expanded membership>40 Non-member & observer states of CERNsome of which have well-advanced outreach programs
Several in the process of joining CERN as full members
Developing nations just starting with HEP programs Comment: “I really like this. I'm particularly interested in the
challenge of extending the Masterclasses to developing countries and would be happy to help with this”
Many HEP labs around the world KEK, Fermilab, Protvino……… Neutrinos, dark matter, light sources (mines) etc.
Related fields of research Particle astrophysics

EPPOG --> IPPOG
Key Objectives (1)
Dave Barney + Michael Kobel, ECFA Plenary Nov. 2010
4
Comment: “I think the main challenge will be getting the IPPOG membership right and of the right size. It will be important to be open to reasonable representation from e.g. major laboratories and other countries around the world. However if the numbers are too big then I suspect it will be less effective”
Comment: “It seems to me that in view of expansion of our activities we may have to set up a few working groups in the near future”
EPPOG --> IPPOG
Key Objectives (1) cont.
Dave Barney + Michael Kobel, ECFA Plenary Nov. 2010
5
EPPOG database of HEP Education & Outreach materials (see EPPOG talk tomorrow)
Will likely need manpower for maintenance
Need much improved web site to take advantage of the database and make content easily available to all Will need manpower for this
EPPOG --> IPPOG
Key Objectives (2)
Dave Barney + Michael Kobel, ECFA Plenary Nov. 2010
6
Tighter integration with other particle physics Education & Outreach groups worldwide
EPPOG --> IPPOG
High Schools
General Public
Scientists
Media Science Centres & Museums

Audience
Improved coordination, resource sharing, strengthening targeted efforts for effective
sustainable impact
Key Objectives (3)
Dave Barney + Michael Kobel, ECFA Plenary Nov. 2010
7
“IPPOG could transform to a possible worldwide leader in scientific education and outreach activities for particle physics and related fields.”
Comment: “I like this one, it is clear and motivating and it reflects how I feel.”
EPPOG --> IPPOG
Key Objectives (4)
Dave Barney + Michael Kobel, ECFA Plenary Nov. 2010
8
Particle physics (mainly CERN & LHC) is well known to the public
EPPOG members have helped this process
EPPOG --> IPPOG
Motivation
Dave Barney + Michael Kobel, ECFA Plenary Nov. 2010
9
In 1997 EPPOG identified 5 primary tasks: Exchange information on outreach activities and experiences Take inventory of materials used for outreach Pool resources
Identify media contacts Identify other collaborating partners to strengthen efforts
EPPOG --> IPPOG
Now is the time to revisit our youth and, at the same time, evolve our group
✔✔
✔✔✔
• EPPOG evolution from “discussion forum” to developing it’s own projects (Masterclasses, database……)
Motivation (cont.)
Dave Barney + Michael Kobel, ECFA Plenary Nov. 2010
10
Core activities of our group will not change Bi-yearly meetings as forums for discussion,
sharing of ideas, etc. Every two years possibly have one meeting outside
Europe Provide organization and support for yearly
International Particle Physics Masterclasses Funding for EPPOG activities is now non-
negligible CERN (database), EPS + Helmholz Alliance +
German “Gentner” program (masterclasses)--- But will likely need more funding/manpower….
EPPOG --> IPPOG
Evolution, not revolution
Dave Barney + Michael Kobel, ECFA Plenary Nov. 2010
11
Require formal approval from ECFA that this is the right thing to do
EPPOG --> IPPOG
Next steps (1): Formal Approval
Dave Barney + Michael Kobel, ECFA Plenary Nov. 2010
12
Next Steps (2) - Governance Who would IPPOG report to?
ECFA, for 2011 at least? EPS + APS (American Physical Society) + APS
(Asian Physical Society) + … i.e. a combination of various international physical societies
ECFA + ACFA + ….i.e. a combination of various international committees for future accelerators
IUPAP (International Union of Pure and Applied Physics)
IUPAP Commission 11 (particles and fields) ICFA (International Committee for Future
Accelerators, sponsored by IUPAP Commission 11)
EPPOG --> IPPOG

Next Steps (3)- Members/Projects
Which new members to add first? How to deal with increased
membership Working groups? More frequent meetings? (via EVO?) Travel outside of Europe is difficult for some
existing members Idea for 1st 2011 IPPOG project
(see talk tomorrow)
Likely need for dedicated manpower in 2011 (see talk tomorrow)
EPPOG --> IPPOG
