Fasting in Islam (Sawm Fasting during the month of Ramadan is an act of worship
moral and social significance for Muslims.
It is required for all Muslims except children below the age of religious
responsibility, unhealthy adults, travelers, and females who are menstruating,
in post childbirth care, pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Fasting has two dimensions:
1. Physical
Refrain from all forms of nourishment, food, liquids (including water), and
intimacy from Imsaak (before dawn) to Maghrib (after sunset).
2. Spiritual and Moral
The spiritual and moral aspects are considered to be of fa
importance than the physical one.
During this month, Muslims get closer to God, purification of the self and
soul, refrain from hurtful behaviour, and practice charity towards others,
during all hours.
During the month of Ramadan, Muslims should focus on additional
worship and God consciousness to improve themselves in all aspects of
their lives and dealings with others including their character, respect for
others, kindness, forgiveness, mannerisms, avoidance of bad language and
poor behaviour.
In addition, having empathy with the poor and donating generously for
charitable causes, sharing of food and inviting others to one’s home for
