Danny Sheldon
Goals of Sports Lightinga solution that will:
1. Create optimum playability for the players to play the game safely and competitively at night
2. Maintain the integrity of the light per IESNA recommendations
3. Provide a system that is safe and pleasing for the players/spectators and is friendly to the neighbors and environment
4. Provide the lowest cost of ownership over an expected 30-40 year life cycle
• Spill Light– The light shining beyond the sports facility caused by
the uncontrolled direct light component from the lighting system.
• Obtrusive Light– Spill light that causes glare, annoyance, discomfort, or
loss of visual ability. Light Pollution.
• Glare– Intense and blinding light. Causes visual discomfort or
disability – Not a function of distance.
Spill light
• Minimize spill, glare and obtrusive light by limiting outdoor lighting that is misdirected, excessive, or unnecessary
• How? Combination of fixture technology and lighting design
The Evolution of Musco’s Spill and Glare Control
Improved Efficiency
Additional Considerations
• Right amount of light, in the right place, at the right time. More light often means wasted light and energy.
• IESNA Guidelines for safety and playability• Photometric Design – proper mounting
heights and setbacks• Automatic on/off controls – consistent
hours of operation
