In December 2012, Cyril Ramaphosa was elected deputypresident of Nelson Mandela's African National Congress Party,and in turn, of South Africa. The election completed histransformation from anti-apartheid activist and labor leader tobusinessman to technocrat politician. ANC insiders say it's a jobthat Mandela always wanted for Ramaphosa, who in the yearssince the end of Apartheid has become one of South Africa's mostsuccessful businessmen. His majority-black-owned ShandukaGroup owns stakes in mining entities, financial institutions,McDonald's South African subsidiaries and Coca-Cola bottlingplants. In December 2011, China Investment Corporatepurchased 25% of Shanduka for $245 million. Ramaphosa firstcame to prominence in the 1980s as founder and promoter of theNational Union of Mineworkers, created to improve the rights ofblack African workers. In 1991, at age 39, he was elected secretarygeneral of the African National Congress and was the mainnegotiator with the National Party during the transition todemocracy. After less than three years in parliament Ramaphosaresigned in 1997, first joining New Africa Investments and thenstarting the Shanduka Group. His wife Tshepo is the sister offellow South African tycoon Patrice Motsepe.
