Research Supervision
At Sultan Qaboos University, I have just started post graduate student supervision; one
student registered in Fall 2012 and another in 2013 as in below table. As the Agricultural
Engineering major was new and graduate programs were not registered, AE major did not
have graduate students until last year 2011. However I have supervised more than 20
undergraduate projects under SWAE4300 design Project 1 and SWAE4301 Design
Project II which are considered to be equivalent to SWAE4900 Special Problems in other
majors. One project at SQU has been accepted proceeding to patent, there are few others
potential for patent process.
Prior to arriving at SQU, at AIT during my 8 years of service, I had supervised and
completed 33 M.Eng./M.Sc. and 4 PhD students from more than 15 different countries
(List provided). Currently I have two of my former continuing PhD supervisees at AIT in
which I serve as Co-Chairperson in the Dissertation Program committees. I completed
more than 3 years with them, guided to obtain candidacy/licentiate within first 18 months.
I also served as an External Examiner for one PhD student from Bangladesh, and have
served in more than 25 PhD examination committees and more than 80 Masters
Examination committees at AIT. AIT in Thailand is an International Graduate Institute,
with around 800 graduate student intake, 20-25% of them are PhD level. The AIT’s board
of trusties comprise of Ambassadors and other high ranking representatives from more
than 25 countries.

Consultancy, Research and Scholarly Contributions
So far I did not involve in much consultancy work at SQU due to heavy teaching load and
existing research projects. My commitment and dedication are given for teaching,
research and developmental activities in the department and the Major. Currently I am
heavily loaded with teaching; regularly 5 courses and involved in one IG and one TRC
projects in progress and expecting to develop another TRC project soon. However, I have
completed consultancy work at AIT, Thailand and my previous occupations in Sri Lanka.
At AIT residual funds generated were mostly used for supporting doctoral research, and
for supporting needy graduate students.
Few examples for such activities in Thailand:

National Services
Organized a three-day workshop collaboratively with Asst Director at Agricultural
Experiment Station (AES) on Familiarization of Farm machinery and equipment,
open to SQU and Ministry participants. All the lecture presentations conducted by
me and assisted demonstrations.
Some recognized Omani farm-level technology transfer problems have been taken
for design class activities. Several design projects completed producing prototypes
which will in the future be beneficial to the Omani farmers, producers, and other
stakeholders.
Examples;
1. Date striper separator machine (in the patent process; presentation was
made at Innovation Center of Oman, assisted by the Innovation
Department at SQU),
2. Manual Date compaction machine,
3. Halwa process mechanization,
4. Automation of ingredient feed in the Halwa machine,
5. Manual weeder for between crop row weeding for corn and vegetable
corps,
6. Solar powered hydroponic system with discreet pump operation for home
yard use. Which will be used for Aquaponic research in one of the ongoing
project on treated wastewater use in aquaculture.
Involved in research under Strategic Projects which are aimed at solving
important National, socio-economic issues.
Examples: Detail of my contribution is given in the Table under Research Grants.
1. Monitoring groundwater use efficiency using smart energy meters and
precision irrigation techniques in Al Batinah region.
Working with the Al Batinah farmer association, 40 farms have been selected
to experiment, and to find best way of controlling salinity issue and improving
water use efficiency and livelihood of farmers.
Beneficiaries - Farmers, people in coastal belt, Agricultural production in
Oman and country as a whole.
2. Modeling and optimization for water use efficiency in sea-water greenhouse.
Greenhouse uses sea water for evaporator cooling and generate fresh water for
irrigation. Beneficial to farmers in the costal belt.
3. Evaluation and optimization of Date Palm replanting cycle.
In order to improve the date farming productivity. LP models were developed
to recommend farmers how to organize farms with replanting at most suitable
time.

4. Maximizing the Use of Treated Wastewater in Irrigation by Year-round Crop
Rotation and Conjunctive Use of Groundwater.
Recently awarded project; which will aimed at providing more irrigation water
to the farmers in the water scares areas. Optimization of production and
distribution will be done.
5. Development of Database for Controlled Environment Agriculture
development in Oman.
Long needed matter; direct beneficiaries will be Ministry of Agriculture and
Fisheries, Ministry of Commerce, Farmers, Economists and Researchers.
University Services

In addition to my service as a Mentor for ASABE, American Society for Agricultural and
Biological Engineers, I consented for the invitation by the HoD to serve as a mentor for
one of the new faculty colleague at SWAE.
I worked with Dr. Abdulrahim Al-Ismaili more than one and a half years, and used my
years of teaching and industrial experience to support him improving his skills. Working
together we have gained immensely and some of the activities performed were as follows;
Continuously attended my lectures of selected courses for 3-4 semesters; Namely,
SWAE2001 Introduction to Agricultural Engineering, SWAE2300 Workshop
Practice, SWAE4304 Modelling and Analysis of Biophysical Systems,
SWAE4301 Design Project II. We both benefitted, I could fine tune my teaching
methods based on his suggestions, while he could learn teaching methods in
different types of courses.
Mentoring on research: I help him with his on-going IG and other projects in
order to improve the quality and outcome. We have already published one
conference paper at Joint CIGR – EuroAgEng International conference which was
held in July 2012 in Spain. We have already completed two research paper drafts
for journal publications and we are now attending to final revisions and
modification.
It was my suggestion and our discussions lead to the successful International
Agricultural Engineering Conference which was held at SQU on February 23-25,
2013. I was the Chairman of organization committee of biannual AAAE
International Agricultural Engineering Conference held in Bangkok in December
2007 and my experience was useful in organizing the SQU conference. I provided
the guidance to Omani faculty accomplishing the task.
It was also my idea to organize the Workshop on Agricultural Engineering
Program at SQU. Considering the complaints by graduated students on
employability, we decided to have the workshop. All stakeholders were invited
and currently in the phase of implementing the recognized workshop
recommendations.
We are working together for one of the IG project, and in progress preparing
Strategic Grant project proposal on creating a Database for Greenhouse
Agriculture. in Oman.
