Hello, I’m Chris Roberts, your Cruise Specialist and GoCruise business owner.
Welcome to 2015 and this year’s first edition of Cruisin’ Magazine. We will bring you all of the latest news on cruise holidays for families, individuals and groups; take a look at some great destinations ‘as seen on screen’, and give you a run-down on aspirational World Cruises for 2016. On top of this, we take a look at the growing area of expedition cruising and why more and more people are heading for the Arctic and Antarctica for the adventure of a lifetime. We also introduce a new cruise operator to the UK market, Pullmantur Cruises, which is filling the gap for affordable, all-inclusive cruising for families and couples alike.

Having spent the majority of my life at sea, starting in the catering department on cross channel ferries prior to an engineering apprenticeship with Shaw Savill Line and ending as Chief Engineer with Carnival Group, I reckon that the sea is in my blood.
Cruising imparts so many fantastic memories for me. From meeting my wife Yvonne on a ships bridge, seeing the Northern Lights, cruising the river Danube, to a cruise from the west to east coast of America through the Panama Canal; all very different but all amazing.
Choosing a favourite cruise is difficult but I certainly have fond memories of cruising from Sydney to New Zealand and the South Pacific Islands, especially Tahiti; cruising from Sydney Harbour is an experience like no other.
Over the last few years Yvonne and I have become addicted to Disney Cruise Lines, with attention to detail like no other! One of cruising’s hidden secrets.
Best regards
Chris Roberts

Dear Chris,
Thank you so much for all your help and guidance in planning our Baltic Cruise with Celebrity. It was just as wonderful as you said it would be and we were so impressed with all aspects of the ship and its organisation. The cabin you booked for us was fabulous, especially as the sun shone on us for most of the cruise, and the choice was down to you and your expertise. A HUGE thank you from us both!

Fred. Olsen Cruise Line’s two largest
ships, Balmoral and Braemar, have just
undergone refurbishment in Germany
and have been fitted with Fred. Olsen’s
popular ‘Café Venus’. Following on from
Boudicca and Black Watch which already
feature the onboard cafés, passengers
on board the newly renovated ships will
now be able to enjoy high-quality coffee
and luxury chocolates. On Balmoral, the
new Café will be created on Lounge Deck
7, while on Braemar, Café Venus will be
installed on Lounge Deck 5.

three ‘R’ Class ships, Insignia, Regatta and
Nautica. Upon joining the fleet, Sirena is
set to undergo a massive 35-day overhaul
and reservations for her maiden voyage are
set to open in March this year. If Oceania’s
current ships are anything to go by, the
Sirena is going to be a stunner and we can’t
wait to see how she turns out!

Situated at the top of the Adriatic, Venice
and its islands were created by Italy’s
largest river, the Po, which empties into
the sea after a 405 mile journey from the
Cottian Alps on the Italy-French border.
One of this region’s most famous cities,
Venice never fails to impress; its opulent
palazzi and elegant fresco-adorned
churches provide a feast for the eyes while
the creamy, delicious gelati found in its
cafés takes care of the taste buds.
Make the most of your time in the city by
choosing a cruise with an overnight stop in
Venice. That way you can see all the sights
by day and take in its charm by night.
Oceania Cruises features several itineraries with overnight stops in Venice including its 10 day ‘Ionian Inspiration’, departing in September and October 2015.
VeniceFounded in 301AD, San Marino is the
most ancient European Republic in the
world and lies 15km from the Romagna
Riviera. At 700 metres above sea level,
the city straddles UNESCO World
Heritage Site, Mount Titano - part of
the wild and rugged Central Apennine
Mountain range. Although small, San
Marino is perfectly formed and visitors
can indulge in many delightful activities
including shopping, gastronomy, visiting
museums, art galleries and collecting
souvenir stamps & coins, as well as taking
in the stunning scenery with a walk
around the republic.
Cruise lines visiting San Marino (from Ravenna) include Princess Cruises; Seabourn; and Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines (from Ancona).
San MarinoThis tiny Venetian jewel is hard not to fall
in love with. Charming, picturesque and
refreshingly authentic, its many delights
will tempt you to return time after time.
Visit the dramatically-located Church of
St. George, where you will be treated to
wonderful views of the city. Then, relax
in Tartinijev Square and watch the world
go by after enjoying some of the region’s
best seafood in one of the city’s numerous
restaurants. Only 20 minutes by bus from
Koper, the largest town on the Slovenian
Coast, Piran is an ideal place for a day trip
if you are not stopping there as part of
your cruise.
Star Clippers calls into Piran as part of its Adriatic itineraries; alternatively, cruise lines including Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Seabourn and Celebrity Cruises all stop in Koper.

Cruisin’ Featured Destination
The sparkling aqua-blue waters of the Adriatic have been capturing the hearts of sailors and sea-loving travellers for centuries. Its west coast runs through Italy and San Marino, while its eastern shores grace the rugged landscapes of Croatia, Slovenia and Montenegro. At the top of the sea sits Venice, one of this region’s crown jewels and a firm favourite of both mainstream and niche cruise lines that make it their home for many weeks of the year. Medieval history and maritime culture abound in the port towns and cities of this stunning European inlet and it is this, along with the natural beauty of its coastlines, mountain ranges and beaches that is responsible for making the Adriatic one of the most popular
destinations for cruisers and holidaymakers alike.

Cruisin’ Magazine 5
• The Adriatic Sea extends 500 miles from
the Gulf of Venice to the Ionian Sea.
• Croatia’s coastal belt is made up of 1185
islands and islets which stretch for
4,058km.
• The east coast of the Adriatic Sea was
inhabited as early as the beginning of the
early Stone Age.
• During both WW1 and WW2 the Adriatic
was an important battle area – there are
many shipwrecks dating from these
periods that are testament to this.
• Over twenty shipwrecks lie off the coast
of Pula, once a strategically vital naval
harbour, including submarines, destroyers
and torpedo-boats.
• According to legend, the artificial islet of
Gospa od Škrpjela (‘Our Lady of the
Rocks’) in Kotor was created by local
seamen after they found an icon
of Madonna and Child on a rock
following a shipwreck. They made an
ancient oath to build a church
on that very site so upon returning from
each successful sea voyage, they laid
a rock in the Bay and over time, the
islet gradually emerged. The custom of
throwing rocks into the sea upon a safe
return to the bay is still alive to this day.
• Scenes for Kings Landing, the capital
of the ‘Seven Kingdoms’ in cult fantasy
drama ‘Game of Thrones’ was filmed in
Dubrovnik.
• Venetian traveller Marco Polo; who was
one of the first Europeans to chronicle
the epic journey from Europe to China is
said to have inspired none other than
Christopher Columbus to travel.
• The Lipica stud farm in Slovenia,
celebrated for its aristocratic Lipizzaners,
is world-renowned and has been
operating uninterruptedly since its
foundation in 1580.
Dubrovnik is extremely popular with cruisers
and holidaymakers alike and for good
reason. A fantastic city for lovers of culture
and history; its Medieval Old Town is dotted
with red-roofed stone buildings, Renaissance
churches and fountains. It is separated from
the sparkling, aqua-blue Adriatic Sea by an
80ft wall, upon which you can walk the 1.3
miles around the city for spectacular views
of the Dalmatian coast. Why not take a
boat tour from Old Town harbour or go sea
kayaking and take in the town walls up close.
Further inland you can enjoy country bike
rides and wine-tasting or take a trip across
the border to Montenegro.
P&O Cruises, Star Clippers, Royal Caribbean International, Cunard, Princess Cruises and many more, visit Dubrovnik throughout the year.
DubrovnikThe fjord-like Bay of Kotor has long been
revered by sailors and tourists alike – its
sheer beauty will have you reaching for your
camera every inch of the way to capture the
grandeur of its surrounding mountains. This
popular port of call is famous not just for its
looks however; history and culture buffs love
it for its art, museums and churches as well
as the remnants of the various empires that
have passed through this region. Adventure
lovers also flock to Kotor for activities
including hiking, mountain biking and
kayaking. It’s also possible to climb the 1300
steps above the city to St. John’s fortress for
spectacular panoramic views over the bay.
You can sail the Bay of Kotor with Princess Cruises, Star Clippers, Cunard, Fred. Olsen, Seabourn and Celebrity Cruises.

Perhaps one of the lesser-known Adriatic
ports, Trieste in Italy is a favourite with
writers and artists who enjoy it for its
quiet serenity, authentic nature and lack of
mass-tourism. It is also purported to have
the finest coffee in Italy and is dotted with
charming Viennese-style coffeehouses. As
a frontier city, Trieste has been owned or
occupied by numerous empires and foreign
forces including the Romans, the Habsburgs,
Mussolini, German and Allied Forces and
was only returned to Italy in 1954. Its past
has left it with an eclectic mix of ethnic
culture and architecture, including one of
the largest synagogues in Europe.
Cunard’s Queen Victoria will be visiting Trieste for the first time in 2015. Regent Seven Seas Cruises also call into Trieste in July 2015.

Single cabins, enrichment programs and, perhaps most
influentially, the removal or lowering of single supplements
have all had an impact on a style of travel that many have
seen as unfeasible in the past.
There are various reasons why you may choose to see the world
on your own; self-development, freedom, or sheer determination
to travel somewhere even if nobody else wishes to join you. But,
with operators welcoming a growing number of single cruisers on
board their accommodating ships; there has never been a better
time to travel solo. Ocean CruisingFred. Olsen Cruise Lines
Whilst many brands have used recent refits to ensure they can cater
for solo travellers, Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines have been ahead of this
curve for a while. All four of their ships feature single cabins and in
some cases there are even balconies available. This means that you
won’t miss out on the spectacular views or the best prices.
The Black Watch, Balmoral, Braemar and Boudicca also offer the
chance to sit with fellow singles at dinner, be accompanied by a
guest on the dance floor and even choose a companion to join you
on your adventures ashore.
P&O Cruises
British cruise line P&O Cruises not only have a wide selection of
cruises available for families, they also offer a great selection of
sailings for singles. Their latest ship to enter service, Britannia, will
feature almost thirty single cabins, but if you cannot wait until March
2015 then current ships Azura, Ventura and Arcadia have all been
refitted to include specialised cabins too.
Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian Cruise Line have made a point of targeting solo cruisers
with their three newest ships, Norwegian Breakaway, Getaway and
Epic. The latter was the first ship in the fleet to do this and is home
to a whopping 128 studio apartments that offer intimate yet stylish
accommodation for adventurous singles. Sister ships Getaway and
Breakaway feature around half this amount, whilst forthcoming
addition, Norwegian Escape, will offer just over eighty.
Norwegian have gone further in their bid to make those travelling
alone feel at home, as anyone staying in a single cabin will receive
exclusive access to the Studio Lounge. This space is designed
specifically to help passengers get to know each other and often
hosts pre-dinner social gatherings.
River CruisingIf you are looking to travel on your own then you are not confined to the
oceans. The intimate and convivial nature of a river cruise means that you
can spend as little or as much time alone as you like, and the excellent
crew to guest ratios mean you will never be ignored. The following
river cruise lines in particular, have gone to great lengths to make solo
passengers feel welcome and involved.
LonelyAlone Doesn’t Have To Mean
Single cruising is a growing market and more and more cruise lines are
creating better facilities for those who like to travel on their own; treating
them on a par with everyone else.
AmaWaterways
Single cabins are somewhat of a rarity on river ships, but AmaWaterways
is one cruise line which breaks the mould. No less than six ships in their
award-winning European fleet feature stylish single staterooms, including
AmaCello, AmaDolce and AmaLyra.
The Berlitz rated “Best River Cruise Fleet in Europe” has also decided
to waive a whole host of supplemental charges on many of their
itineraries such as “The Romantic Danube”, “Tulip Time Cruise” and the
festive favourite “Christmas Time Cruise”.
Uniworld
Whilst Uniworld only offer one single stateroom across their fleet, on
board SS Catherine, they have joined AmaWaterways in doing away with
certain supplements. This means you can opt for itineraries like “Grand
France”, “Imperial Waterways of Russia” and “European Jewels” whilst
saving yourself fifty per cent in the process.
Viking River Cruises
Viking are one of the world’s most loved river cruise lines and the fact
that single guests are so well treated probably has a lot to do with this.
Whilst you are free to come and go as you wish, enjoying the excellent
service and facilities; single staterooms on both Viking Legend and Viking
Prestige will ensure you don’t have to pay a pretty penny to do so.
Expedition Cruising
Why not broaden your horizons and head somewhere truly unique.
There are a range of expedition cruises that allow you to explore unique
landscapes in both the Arctic and the Antarctic and avoid those parts
of the world which are regularly frequented by tourists and adventurers
alike.
Many expedition operators, including G Adventures, Quark and
Lindblad, offer the option to share with another guest to avoid paying a
single supplement. Someone of the same gender and roughly the same
age will be chosen to share with you and each person will therefore only
have to pay for themselves. To learn more about these expedition cruises,
see pages 18-19.
Whichever style of cruising you choose, sailing the world as a single cruiser is a great way to travel. You are sure to enjoy many new experiences and quickly discover that alone doesn’t have to mean lonely.

You might hear about how the staff on board knew their names, or how they were treated like family, or how they went the extra mile to ensure that they enjoyed their time on the ship and ashore to the fullest. Cruise after cruise, AmaWaterways’ guests speak of the wonderful service they received on board. It could be the waiter who learned their names and remembered their drink of choice at dinner, or the chef at breakfast who knew how they liked their eggs. It could be the Cruise Manager who planned something special for a wedding anniversary, or the refreshing drink and chilled towel that awaited them on board after a day of sightseeing.
All tours & excursions included…
When you travel with AmaWaterways you do more than simply pass through a destination – you experience it in an authentic and in depth manner. All itineraries are carefully crafted in order to immerse guests in the scenery, history and culture of all destinations, with daily tours and excursions all included in the price of their holiday.

2014 marked the 100 year anniversary of a waterway which transformed both trade and tourist routes in Central and South America. The Panama Canal was first opened in August of 1914 and was welcomed with open arms due to the fact that it resolved a frustrating issue of having to sail round Cape Horn when travelling south from the Atlantic into the Pacific.
Not only has the introduction of this exceptional feat of modern engineering been an important influence in the increase of maritime trade; tourism in this part of the world has also benefited as travellers look to explore the canal itself and take a much more convenient route through Central America.
The Convenience and Curiosity of
Canal Cruising
Panamax-imum Capacity
Construction was initiated by the French
in 1881 but was actually completed by the
Americans over three decades later. Created
via the use of excavations and a man-made
lake to keep these to a minimum; the canal
features locks that were originally designed
by Gustave Eiffel, is 26 metres above sea
level, and is nearly 50 miles long.
Vindication for a stretch of water, which
sadly saw thousands of men lose their lives
during its construction, is shown in the way
that annual traffic has continued to increase
since that day 100 years ago. In its first year,
the canal saw around 1,000 ships enter or
exit through Limon Bay, but in 2008 this
figure had reached over fourteen times that
amount. The volume of ships that traverse
these waters is set to rise again though as
the latest facelift will allow modern-day
megaships, almost three times larger than the
current Panamax vessels (the largest ships to
use the canal), to make their way through this
Panamanian ‘short-cut’ from 2016 onwards.
A Collection Of Canals
This was by no means the first canal of its
kind though, as the construction effort was
inspired by a similar creation built just twelve
years before. We are, of course, referring
to the Suez Canal; a man-made stretch of
water that allows ships to travel between
the Red and Mediterranean Seas without
having to take the route around Africa, thus
saving 7,000 miles. Just like its counterpart
in Panama, the Suez Canal is currently being
expanded to allow more traffic to utilise it.
Other similar man-made channels include
the Kiel Canal, first established in 1784 and
which provides convenient passage from the
Baltic Sea into the North Sea; and the Corinth
Canal of which construction began in the
same year as work was initiated in Panama.
Many cruise operators will give you the
chance to see some of these amazing feats of
engineering up close and personal. Companies
such as Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises and
Royal Caribbean International all have Panama
Canal cruises available which typically travel
between the cities of Fort Lauderdale and
either Los Angeles or San Diego. Suez Canal
cruises are also very popular, with operators
like Fred. Olsen, P&O Cruises and Azamara
offering itineraries that visit ports in both the
Middle East and the Med.
A trip along the Suez with Fred. Olsen
Cruise Lines typically starts at £1176, whilst
a cruise on the Panama Canal with Princess
Cruises could start from as little as £783 for
an eleven night round trip.

Itinerary: Barcelona to LivornoDay 1 - Embarkation
Following a very efficient, clean and quick flight from Stansted, and
a short twenty minute drive to Barcelona port, we checked-in and
got on board just after 1pm.
Our first experience of Sovereign was a buffet-style lunch in
the main dining room. It was very nice and the service was very
attentive. After refuelling ourselves with the excellent options
available, it was finally time to see our cabin; a large ocean view
room which was very clean, and surprisingly modern for a ship of
her age.
The sailaway party was superb, as a Spanish-based cruise line
they really do know how to celebrate. As dinner came and went,
we just about mustered up enough energy to enjoy a coffee in Café
San Marco and have a brief look around the shops before heading
off to bed.
Day 2 - Sea Day
The following day we had plenty of opportunity to explore Sovereign
and get a real taste for what a Pullmantur cruise is like. We enjoyed a
tasty buffet breakfast (be warned, the Spanish don’t have the same
passion for queuing as us Brits, so don’t be afraid to dive on in!)
followed by a drink in the Spinnaker Piano Bar. The crew later put on
a lively lunch, featuring a ‘dance off’ which was great fun, then we
treated ourselves to a nail treatment in the spa.
It wasn’t long before we were taking advantage of the all-inclusive
drinks. There are a surprising amount of options, including branded
drinks, and the staff seem to relish learning each guest’s favourite
tipple and serving it up with a smile.
In the evening we went to the Captain’s Cocktail Party.
Champagne and canapés were offered as we were introduced to
the ship’s various heads of department. It was great to see how
much the staff were appreciated and the occasion ended with a flag
parade representing the 30 different nationalities of crew onboard.
Later, we had dinner at the speciality ‘Wu’ restaurant. This exotic
Asian-fusion restaurant is supplementary to Pullmantur’s otherwise
all-inclusive offering but was only €25 each and included a bottle of
wine! We couldn’t fault the staff, food, presentation or ambience and
were surprised that the restaurant wasn’t full to the brim.
Day 3 - Naples
We headed out on the English-speaking tour of Naples and
Pompeii (additional English excursions are added to itineraries
depending on demand). Pompeii was fantastic and an absolute
must on this trip.
Back on the ship, there was time for a dip in the Jacuzzi before
dinner in the main restaurant where it was Cocktail Party theme.
The pool deck had been transformed into a tropical beach
paradise; tables laid out with amazing symmetrical fruit displays,
Friends Kathy and Lucy recently enjoyed an all inclusive cruise
on board Pullmantur’s Sovereign, travelling from Barcelona to
Livorno; visiting Naples and Rome along the way…

cakes, fruit skewers and ice carvings. Make sure you fuel up at
dinner however as true to Mediterranean lifestyles; the party
wasn’t due to get going until 12.45am! We couldn’t stay up quite
that late, so instead joined in with the Salsa Dancing before
heading off to bed.
Day 4 - Rome
We had an early start for our 90 minute transfer from Civitavecchia
Port to Rome, where we spent the day sightseeing. While the driver
mainly spoke Spanish during the journey, a fellow passenger kindly
informed us (in English) that the pick-up time was at 4.30.
Whilst a day is not really long enough to truly appreciate Rome,
it was great to see the major sights including the Colosseum, Piazza
Venezia and Trevi Fountain. Back on the Ship that evening, dinner
was great once again with salmon, veal, pork and lots of other things
on the menu.
Day 5 - Livorno
Check-out was at 11am and our taxi transfer arrived on time to take
us from Livorno to Pisa airport. Pisa airport is small but does have
some nice shops to help you pass the time before your flight.
We had a great experience with Pullmantur. The ship had a real
party atmosphere and is definitely aimed at young couples or
families. The language barrier never really affected our day to day
activities on the ship. One thing is for certain though; cruising with
Pullmantur means totally giving yourself to the Spanish culture and
taking everything as it comes.
Pullmantur understands that everybody wants something different from their cruise holiday. Whether you are coming on board with your family, your partner, by yourself or with friends, we have blended together all the ingredients needed for the perfect trip. Spectacular nights, fun-filled days, relaxing afternoons and unforgettable excursions combine for an ocean adventure you will never forget. Putting entertainment, fun, and a relaxed, carefree attitude at the top of our list, Pullmantur’s all-inclusive cruise holidays offer fantastic value for money for children and adults alike. With nothing to worry about except what you want to do each day, you are certain to wake up with a smile on your face every day.

Wildlife, Wilderness and WanderlustYour Once In A Lifetime Could Be Today
Travel is all about stepping into unknown territories and exploring
new places, but how often do we really get the chance to do this?
Many of the world’s destinations may be foreign to us personally,
but plenty of people have trodden these paths before us and
countless more are likely to follow in our footsteps. However, this
is something that cannot be said about the polar regions of the
Arctic and Antarctica.
Polar Expedition cruises offer the chance to discover
destinations that feature on very few people’s ‘been there done
that’ lists, and are featured in even fewer travel guides.
The Amazing Arctic
Covering countries such as Canada, Norway, Iceland and
Greenland; Arctic voyages take you right into the heart of the
action. You will get the chance to witness polar bears in their
natural habitat, interact with indigenous communities that have
made the Arctic their home for hundreds of years, and experience
some of nature’s most outstanding showcases.
The Northern Lights may well make an appearance should you
travel during the autumn or winter months, whilst anyone sailing
during the summer will be able to observe the glorious Midnight
Sun. This natural phenomenon happens for differing lengths of time
depending on how far north you go, but generally speaking the
majority of the Arctic Circle is bathed in twenty-four hour sunlight
between the months of May and August.
Throughout your journey you will increase your knowledge and
understanding of this part of the world, and the wildlife that live
here, thanks to experienced and passionate expedition lecturers.
Their understanding of the local area will give you the best chance
of spotting polar bears, whales, seabirds and any other creatures
that may be on view. As well as tours of the Arctic, polar cruises
can take you to the top of the world. A limited number of polar
voyages offer you the opportunity to go all the way to the North
Pole on board a nuclear powered ice-breaker vessel. If simply
being there isn’t enough, on arrival at 90° north explorers are
encouraged to plunge themselves into the freezing waters in the
ultimate test of fortitude.
Awesome Antarctica
Antarctica and its surrounding territories also have their own
story to tell. As you make your way to the seventh continent,
your expedition may also make stops in places such as the
Falklands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. Many
of these destinations are uninhabited, but you will also have the
opportunity to see thriving communities and learn all about their
way of life.
Your journey to Antartica will start in South America as you
depart from Chile, Argentina or Uruguay’s Montevideo airport.
There are fly & cruise options available as well as journeys that
enable you to sail all the way, plus you have a chance to explore
your departure city before you embark on your adventure.
As you set foot on the Antarctic Peninsula, having navigated
the tricky and unpredictable Drake Passage, you are sure to be
greeted by the stars of this icy show; penguins. From Gentoos to
Chinstraps and, of course, the noble Emperor; these black and
white creatures are what many people come this far to see.
There is plenty more to see around you too. Enormous
icebergs drift past eerily while distant roars, as icebergs come
apart and crash into the sea, can be heard from afar. Large, icy
peeks dominate the landscape as you stare out into the pristine
white and imagine the endeavours of brave explorers such as
Robert Falcon Scott, Roald Amundsen and Ernest Shackleton.
You may have been to America, you may have visited Africa, you may even have immersed yourself in the Far Eastern culture of Asia, but have you ever set foot on the icy landscape that is Antarctica? If the answer is no then it’s time you learnt of the jaw-dropping world of expedition cruises…

More Than A Passing Visit Whilst the ships that will take you on these exciting adventures
are not only comfortable, safe and offer some excellent on board
facilities; much of the action will take place away from them. A
fleet of Zodiacs will enable you to get up close and personal with
fjords, islets and caves, whilst there are also a host of exhilarating
activities to take part in onshore.
The opportunity to camp out under the polar night’s sky should
not be missed and those who would rather forgo the Zodiacs in
favour of travelling via kayak are encouraged to do so. Helicopter
rides, hot air balloon trips, photography workshops and plenty
of walking, hiking and trekking will also ensure that you can
take in your incredible surroundings from a variety of different
perspectives.
Antarctic
Size: Antarctica is just less than 14 million square kilometres.
That’s over 60 times larger than the UK.
Notable Inhabitants: Penguins (8 species), seals, dolphins,
terns, petrels, shags.
Southernmost City: Ushuaia
Did You Know?
• Antarctica is protected by a treaty meaning that, despite
claims from many countries, no one can actually ‘own’ the land.
• Antarctica has no set time zone and so each research centre
stationed there usually sets the time to that of their home nation.
Arctic
Size: The Arctic Circle covers 6% of the world’s surface.
Notable Inhabitants: Inuit communities, polar bears, reindeer,
muskox, walrus, puffins, Arctic foxes.
Northernmost City: Longyearbyen
Did You Know?
• Due to the tilting of the Earth’s axis, the Arctic Circle
is on the move. Between 1950 and 2008 it moved
over 800 metres.
• It is against the law to die in Longyearbyen.
Land of Ice and Fire (Iceland Circumnavigation) Mythical Iceland is the land of ice and fire, with glaciers and volcanoes side by side. It is the perfect destination for explorers looking for the unexpected.

Venice
Of all the romantic and beautiful cities in Europe, Venice is perhaps the one that features most prominently on people’s bucket lists. It’s the uniqueness of this floating city that attracts people from far and wide, as well as the fact that you can easily lose yourself in its quaint maze of canals and cobbled streets. And with art, culture and architectural beauty around every corner, it is little wonder that this Italian gem is in high demand.
Whether you refer to it specifically as your ‘bucket list’ or not, the chances are that you have a mental catalogue of all the exciting places in the world that you would like to visit someday. Here are some fantastic locations to add to your own personal list, if they don’t feature there already…
AweA bucketful of
The Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon, situated in Arizona, USA, is truly one of the natural wonders of the modern world and a sight that many people clamber to see. At its widest point, the gap between the two sides is 18 miles and geologists believe that the Colorado River which weaves its way through the valley has been carving out its path for at least seventeen million years. Arrive early in the morning to experience a beautiful sunset that will stay with you forever.
The Maldives
For those who like to relax and do nothing more than…well, nothing whilst away, the Maldives have to be the pinnacle of luxury holidays. The islands are filled with exclusive boutique resorts that offer fine dining, pristine beaches and spa treatments that transport you to another world. In a time where we are constantly connected with what’s happening around us, these picturesque retreats offer the chance to truly cut loose from modern day ties.
Peru
Backpackers and hiking enthusiasts travel to Peru every year to take on the 4-day journey known as the Inca Trail. Whilst the trek along one of three trails might be arduous, there is something magical waiting at the end to make it all worthwhile; Machu Picchu. These ancient Incan ruins are one of the most preserved cultural sights in the world and are constantly being restored by local archaeologists.

The inspiration for a holiday can come from anywhere. It could be a recommendation from a friend, an irresistible advert that you see in a travel agent’s window or fuelled by what we see on the silver screen or our own humble TV set. Here are some excellent destinations that you may just have spied during the films and TV shows that the past year has offered us.
New Zealand – The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
Fans of elves, orcs and wizards alike will be
more than aware that the final instalment in
the Hobbit series was released in cinemas
in December 2014. Something else that
will be apparent to anyone who is familiar
with these films and those of the Lord of
the Rings trilogy, is that the majority of the
filming was done in New Zealand.
Whilst being a beautiful and breath-taking
destination in its own right, the success of
these movies has given tourists an extra
reason to visit New Zealand. Tolkien fans will
encounter familiar settings on both North
and South Island, none more so than at the
Hobbiton movie set near Matamata. Other
locations of interest include the beautiful
town of Glenorchy where you may recognise
the fortress of ‘Isengard’ and the Pelorus
River in Marlborough where the infamous
barrel scene from ‘The Desolation of Smaug’
was filmed.
Northern Ireland – Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones is one of the biggest TV
series in recent years, delighting fans all over
the world who are drawn into this fantasy
world of dragons, dwarfs and Daenerys
Targaryen. It may surprise some avid viewers
though that filming is carried out in Northern
Ireland. Winterfell, capital of The North
and home to the Starks, is better known
as Castle Ward in County Down and the
gloomy-looking King’s Road is actually a
row of beech trees in County Antrim known
as the Dark Hedges. Fans of this epic series
can now experience the beauty we have
just across the Irish Sea whilst walking in
the footsteps of some of their favourite
characters.
Atlantic City – Boardwalk Empire
The critically acclaimed American series
Boardwalk Empire, reached its final
season in 2014. Although most of the
scenes were shot in New York City,
the programme is set in 1920s Atlantic
City with many of the outside locations
(including the boardwalk itself) created
with the use of visual effects.
Although the city is, thankfully, a much
different place today to how it was during
the era that Boardwalk Empire is set;
many fans of the show will want to see the
charm of the boardwalk for themselves.
Not to mention the beautiful beaches,
numerous gambling opportunities and
excellent shopping.
Italy – The Trip
This cult TV series, in which Rob Brydon
and Steve play themselves as they
travel together, aired its second series
in 2014, but may have passed under the
radar for many. Fans of the two comedy
geniuses will be well aware that this
time the two were travelling through the
wonderful country of Italy. As they began
in Piedmont and made their way south
through Siena, Rome and then finally onto
Capri, they are sure to have inspired many
a trip to this magnificent part of the world.

Traditional British CruisingSmaller Friendly Service

New York City If there is one place in the world that will keep
you entertained around the clock, then it has
to be the ‘city that never sleeps’. As cultural
as it is iconic and as glamorous as it is diverse,
New York City will captivate and inspire you
in equal measures. Whether you choose to
take a stroll around Central Park, go shopping
in Times Square or take a thought-provoking
visit to the 9/11 memorial, the Big Apple is
sure to leave a lasting impression on you in
one way or another.
Why not spend a few nights in New York at the start or end of a transatlantic cruise?
Dubai Dubai has to be one of the most luxurious
and opulent destinations in the world and
one which allows you to be as active or
inactive as you like. There are beaches to lay
on, a plethora of shopping malls to explore,
the world’s tallest building to scale and even
waterparks to enjoy; all within easy walking
distance of each other. And with some of the
most refined hotels on the planet offering
much more than just a bed for the night,
all the ingredients are there to create the
holiday of a lifetime.
Cruise to Dubai and enjoy a night’s stay in 5* luxury.
China China is an enormous country featuring
many excellent cities that provide wonderful
destinations for a holiday. However, as well as
trips to specific cities, why not embark on a tour
that takes in multiple locations and gives you a
chance to see many of the major sights in one
trip. One such tour features stays in Shanghai,
Xian and Beijing; allowing you to experience
famous attractions such as the Terracotta
Warriors, the Forbidden City, parts of the Great
Wall and the Yu Garden whilst really immersing
yourself in China’s fascinating culture.
Consider a Yangtze river cruise taking in the Great Wall, Three Gorges and more...
Canada Journeying across the Canadian Rockies on
the Rocky Mountaineer is one of the most
popular Canadian holidays on offer today.
This inspiring journey allows you to enjoy
some of Canada’s stunning natural beauty,
including Lake Louise, Banff National Park,
and the Columbia ice fields, as well as taking
in the sights of one of the country’s biggest
cities; Vancouver. Spot bears in their natural
habitat and take part in exciting activities
such as adventuring through Capilano
Suspension Bridge Park.
Combine the Rockies with a stay in Vancouver, or embark on a Rail & Alaska Cruise holiday.
South Africa South Africa can offer a variety of different
holidays, from a modern city break in Cape
Town or Johannesburg to an enthralling
safari in one of the game reserves in the east
of the country. But if you don’t want to miss
out on either experience, you can always
combine the two. A holiday that starts with
a cable car journey up Table Mountain and
ends with you chasing the Big Five in the
Kruger National Park is sure to be one filled
with many lasting memories.
Why not book a twin centre holiday combining Cape Town with 3 nights in the Wineland region or a safari.

Ingredients2 racks of lamb, with 6 -7 bones each
2 sprigs parsley
6-7 leaves mint
1 sprig thyme
1 sprig rosemary
250g breadcrumbs
3 tbsp Dijon mustard
2 tbsp olive oil
Salt and pepper
MethodPreheat your oven to 200°C while you season and
sear the lamb in hot oil (fat side first). Once the
crust turns a nice golden brown, pop it into the
oven and roast for 7 to 8 minutes.
While you wait, chop the stems off the herbs and
combine with breadcrumbs in a blender. Blend
until the mixture turns bright green.
Remove the lamb from the oven then brush with
the mustard before dipping into the herb-crust
mix. Allow to rest. Return the lamb to the oven for
a further 2-3 minutes, then carve the racks into
individual chops before serving!
