statement
This body of work explores themes found lurking within the mind of the artist. Not knowing what the work is going to be about is rather liberating. Mistakes cannot exist if there was no master plan to begin with. The painted images of figures (human, animal, other worldly (as in angels ) ) start to appear from within the expressionist starting point of the under painting ,just waiting to be enhanced, brought into life and complemented by the addition sometimes, but not all times, of collage.......cut out of magazines or printed copies of drawings from the artist's sketchbook, or printed on paper copies of photographs of life models, including himself. In fact, it is discovered that the themes making themselves known on the canvas are quite possibly some sort of self-portrait. Self-therapy, self-diagnosis, the inner war being waged in the head of the artist making itself known to the world, displaying the victory of mind over inner devils.Or they could just be self-portraits trying to appear more interesting. But if this is so then which portrait resembles what we know of the artist's appearance? Is it the jagged, headaching portrait? Is it the knight of old with a woman's head? Is it the harlequin in a crash helmet? And what of the harlequin draped over the chair with some monochrome figure in the background watching him? Is Harlequin the artist, or is the spying figure the artist.........there is a similarity of dress.........maybe its both? But we must not give too much away. We must leave some questions to be answered by the viewer. The viewer may want to ask themselves if there is an elephant in the room, and if so what is it? Indeed, the viewer may want to ask what is the actual truth in these paintings? The viewer should also wonder at what the myth is in these paintings? Harlequins......St.George.........flying fish.........ordinary people. It should be pointed out that there is at least one actual self-portrait in this body, although it may not sit right in the minds of the viewer . Please do not adjust your sets.
