Cable Options• Types of Cables
– Loose Tube– Ribbon Cable / Indoor– Composite Cable– Tight Buffered Cable
5Corning Internal.

Cable Options• Outdoor Cable
– Has a UV protected jacket for exposure to sun– Has some type of water blocking material to prevent water absorption– Can be placed in duct or direct buried
• Indoor Cable– Has a flame rating to be used indoors– Typically has a thicker coating for direct termination– Should not be used outside; even in duct
• Indoor/Outdoor Cable– Has a UV protected jacket– Has water blocking material– Has a flame rating in order to be used indoors

Cable Options• Riser vs. Plenum
– Indoor cable can be rated as general, riser or plenum– Riser cable is cable that is typically run between floors in non-
plenum areas– Plenum cable is cable that is laid in the plenum spaces of
buildings – typically drop ceilings and most horizontal runs– Plenum cable can be used in riser areas– Riser cable cannot be used in plenum areas– Cables without a flame rating can only be run 50ft inside a
building before having to be placed in conduit or transition to a flame-rated cable

Splice Comparison• Single Fiber
– ~ 2 minutes per splice– ~ 25 minutes for a 12 fiber cable– ~ $25 per splice– ~ $300 for a 12 fiber cable
• Ribbon– ~ 8 minutes per splice– ~ 13 minutes if you have to ribbonize– ~ $125 per splice

National Electric Code – Key Requirements & Example
• Max Power per circuit at Power Source: 100VA
• Max Voltage at Power Source: 60V (-48V typical)
EXAMPLE
High Power Line leaves 48V DC Supply – Example 50Amp
Fuse Panel brings power below 100W: Example 48V x 1.5Amp fuse = 72W
3 16AWG Cu Pair leave Fuse Panel @ max 72W / each. Will use a pair for each modules within QSX cabinet
Cu Pairs travel 500ft Power Draw of 58.1W for 700 and AWS add-on’s and 39.2W for Cell/PCS RHU
** New ATT requirement requires that we design to -41.89VDC to maximize battery life (41.89 x 2Amp = 83.78 max output)

How do I know what size power plant to use?– By knowing the distance to each remote and the remote type
we can calculate the power required in the closet.– It is a very manual process but can be used to generate load
requirements– If Corning does the Fiber design, ask Corning Engineering to
size Power Plant
