Construction Futures Wales Leadership and Management
Taster Workshop
Rod Keeble and Brian Jones(Cardiff Metropolitan University)
12th May 2015
Why develop leadership skills?
• Successful firms do things differently – they have a number of traits in common– e.g. make better use of IT, good at marketing, etc. .... but also have
good leadership skills
• Leaders of successful businesses have a vision for the company and are dedicated to seeing it through
• Hence, CFW Leadership Programme • It will build on the well-known success factors for small firms
Leaders and Managers
• Leadership and management - they share some complementary skills - but are different–
• Leaders: in the nominations for a recent award scheme the most commonly used adjectives to describe good leaders were:
“Inspirational, Visionary, Committed,
Enthusiastic, Passionate, Determined,
Dedicated …… Charismatic”• But no agreed or consistent list emerged
Can you develop leadership skills?
• The Programme sees leadership as a pattern of behaviour that can be learned –
– through experience rather than lectures – within an Action Learning environment - i.e. where we
learn from everyone in the room– it creates new ways of thinking – together with real world case studies, the CFW Leadership
Programme encourages participants to challenge and reflect
The aim of the Programme
• The CFW Leadership Programme is a 10-month leadership and management development programme
• It aims to provide practical, people oriented management skills – with a focus on leadership and growth
• It is based on a number of innovative modes of delivery• But the starting point for developing leadership skills is
the individual
– The Journey begins with, and seeks to develop, self

Leadership and Management Challenges
Brian Jones
Leadership or Management?
• On your tables, please come up with:– A brief working definition of leadership– A brief working definition of management
One Further Question
• In getting over the 100 foot bar, which is the more important?
Leaders v Managers
• Leadership and management share some complementary skills,
• Management is about planning, co-ordinating, and putting performance systems in place
• Leaders create the capacity for people to do something different – to do more than they would normally do in response to change
• Effective leadership is about leading change

at the same time as

of accounting
