What are Composites?
• A composite is a material having two or more distinct constituents or phases
• These constituents have to be in reasonable proportions (typically greater than 5%)
• The constituent phases have different properties, and therefore the composite properties are noticeably different from those of the constituents
• The constituents are usually combined and intimately mixed by man-made means

Types of Composites
• There are three basic types of composites
• Fibre Reinforced Composite
• Particulate Reinforce Composites
• Laminar Composites
Fibre Reinforced Composites A matrix with reinforcing that is significantly longer in one direction
Particulate Reinforced Composites A matrix with reinforcing that is of approximately equal proportions in all directions
Laminar Composites Layers of materials with differing properties
