Immunisations
On Friday the 20th May, as part of Education Week, Mr. Shaw’s Year 9 Geography class are organising a banquet for 200
members of the Edenhope community. The banquet is being held to celebrate the people and foods from around the world.
Students have researched the origin of many of the foods we use and take for granted in our daily diet. The banquet will
consist of a three course meal featuring foods from around the world and will include games and entertainment. This event
will start at 12:30pm at Edenhope College ‘Big Barn’. For $10 you are able to purchase a ticket and attend this event or if you
are a child in Year 4 or below your ticket will only cost $6. Tickets are available from the front office at Edenhope College.
We encourage all who attend to dress as something from a biome. This may be an animal such as: giraffe, horse, or pig. You
may even dress up as: an American Indian or Eskimo. Contact Edenhope College on: 55851277 to book your ticket.

Annual Report 2015 Presentation
The school community is invited to receive the 2015 Annual Re-
port at the next School Council meeting, Monday 16th May at
7.00pm in the Centre. You are welcome to come along and hear
about and celebrate the successes of 2015 and the things that
emerged over the year to work on into the future. As is the case in
many schools, writing effectively for specific purposes is some-
thing we have focussed on and will continue to over the course of
this year. The connection between reading and writing is an im-
portant one – these are interdependent skills that should be prac-
tised for improvement. Reading improves writing, writing im-
proves reading. Look for ways to increase practise of both.
ICT Policies
The School Council has been busy reviewing policies – there are
significant changes proposed to our ICT Policy and Agreement. I
will share these with you in the next newsletter and on the College
website as soon as they are ratified by the School Council. The
changes will have a greater emphasis on the shared responsibility
we have as staff, students and parents to be good digital citizens
and to engage in ongoing education about how to be safe, ethical
and responsible online as well as off-line.
NAPLAN
National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy tests
were held on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of this week.
Students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 settled into their tests well and were
patient and diligent over the course of the three days. The free
breakfast we offered to participants was well received and they all
had fun sharing this at the beginning of their day. Thank you to
Mr O’Leary, Mrs Irving, Mrs Tucker our student helpers and Mrs
Hawkins for getting this organised each day.
The Banquet
Mr Shaw’s class is putting a lot of work into learning about the
origins of different foods from around the globe. Edenhope stu-
dents will be showcasing their learning through a celebration ban-
quet on Friday 20th May. Other classes are joining in for the day.
We are pleased to be able to host students from St. Malachy’s
Primary School and Apsley Primary School. Tickets are available
from the front office and I encourage you to come along and en-
joy the event with us.
Walk to School Day
Walk to School with us on Friday 20th May. Buses will be drop-
ping students at the Tennis Courts or Edenhope Pit Stop in the
morning. Of course, it would be great if we didn’t need a special
day to remind us to walk more often especially to and from school
if we are able to.
Supervision of Students before and after school
Scheduled supervision of students at schools is from 8.35am until
beginning of school day for students at 8.50am. At the end of the
day, supervision is provided in the Bus Area until the last bus
leaves. It is advisable for students not to arrive at school before
supervision is provided in the yard.
Invitation to provide feedback for our Strategic Plan Review
We are currently reviewing the last Strategic Plan 2013-2016. We
would appreciate your feedback on things we have done well and
things to improve on into the future. I invite you to participate in
some Parent Forums – similar to those run by Mr Neall and Mr
McClure during 2015. The main focus will be on the two key
questions: 1. What have we achieved and done well? 2. What are
areas for improvement or focus into the future? If you would like
to come along to the first forum – It will be on Tuesday 17th May
6.30pm – 7.30pm. One person per household is preferred.
Please ring 5585 1277 to let me know you are coming along.

Last Wednesday, students in World of Foods, were
fortunate to experience South Indian Cuisine in a
Masterclass with Shabina.
The tantalising menu Shabina prepared with the students
included Ghee Rice, Chapathi’s, Chicken Curry, Potato
Stu, yogurt and Pappadums.
On behalf of the World of Foods class I would like to
thank Shabina for coming in and sharing her amazing
skills and knowledge with the students.
Mrs Annabel Hawkins
The techniques we used to
prepare the food were very
different than what we usually
use. I enjoyed making and eating
the food with our hands.
Angus Caldow
I have never made Chapathi’s
before and I enjoyed learning a
new type of cuisine. It was very
inspiring to learn new
techniques. Madison Walton
The food was very spicy and
had lots of flavour. I found it
interesting the way Shabina
showed us how people in India
eat their food with their hands.

From May puts sun hats away. That’s the SunSmart winter message, but what does this mean for us. The sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the major cause of skin cancer but it is the best natural source of vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for bone and muscle development and the prevention of osteoporosis. From May until August in Victoria, the UV drops below three, meaning most of us need to make an extra effort to get outside for some vitamin D exposure. During these low UV months, sun protection is not required unless near highly reflective surfaces such as snow or outdoors for extended periods. But just how much sun is enough for vitamin D? From May - August, SunSmart recommends that Victorians with fair to olive skin get two to three hours of midday winter sun exposure to the face, hands and arms (or equivalent area of skin) spread over the week to help with vitamin D levels. Tips for staff and student vitamin D exposure
Physical activity assists the body’s synthesis of vitamin D, so schedule activity which gets students outside and active in the middle of the day. Walk briskly on yard duty or consider a walking meeting.
The more skin exposed, the better, so after you’ve warmed up, take off the scarf and roll up the sleeves. Download SunSmart’s free UV Alert widget to your school website so that staff and parents know when the UV drops
below 3. Check out SunSmart’s Vitamin D tracker - smartphone app and online versions. Get your students to work through the
tracker to see if they are meeting their vitamin D requirements. The vitamin D tracker and more information on vitamin D is available at www.sunsmart.com.au
Remember that snow + alpine conditions can affect UV levels and therefore sun protection is still required for ski camps and excursions.
Those concerned about vitamin D levels should visit their GP. Levels can be checked via a simple blood test and treated with supplements where required.

A reminder to parents to supply an explanation note when your child returns to school after being absence. The Department of Education
and Training requires all student absences to be coded into their Attendance program. Coding is decided by the reason why your child was
absent i.e. illness, dental appointment, personal reasons etc. If no explanatory note is received the absence is classed as an Unexplained
Absence and can be referred to DET, if these are occurring regularly. If you have plans that require your child to be away for a large
amount of time i.e.5 days or more, please advise us prior to the absence so that teachers can supply on going work for the student if
necessary. Absences can be advised via a hand written note, school supplied Absence Note, phone call to the office or Xuno. It would be
appreciated that any verbal communication of absences to a teacher be followed up with a signed note. Thank you for your co operation.

HEALTH NEWS
Acting Sergeant Darren Ferluga has offered to present a Junior Firearms Licence course at Edenhope College to Year 7-12 students. Two x
two and a half hour sessions are required to run the safety presentation and then each student needs to complete a written test. By
completing the course the successful candidates will be able to apply for a Junior Firearms Licence. Darren will conduct the course off duty
and a payment of $10.00 per participant will be required. This payment will be put towards the Operation Flinders program.
Acting Sergeant Darren Ferluga commented: “There have been a number of recent prosecutions of
unlicensed persons handling firearms including children on farms. We don’t want that to happen out
here.”
Interested students need to collect a permission form from Mrs Rainsford on Monday 16 May.
