College of Veterinary Medicine
SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS
Scholarships and awards are presented to deserving students based upon academic
achievements, financial need, area of interest, or other college-approved criteria
recommended by donors. Many scholarships and awards are endowed, thus providing
a permanent base of support in perpetuity and providing lasting legacy to the donor.
Thanks to the loyalty and generosity of many Iowa State alumni and friends, the College
of Veterinary Medicine has a long history of supporting future veterinarians. To help
counter the rising educational debt facing new D.V.M.s (now averaging over $134,000
per student), the continued support of donors has allowed for substantial growth in both
the number and amount of scholarships awarded. Supporting students is a top priority
of Iowa State and the college, and I’m very pleased that we continue to increase the
funds available to reward our outstanding students.
For the 2015-2016 academic year, over $730,000 in scholarships and awards
will be made to students. Over 50 percent of eligible veterinary medical
professional students received an endowed or annual scholarship, with the
average award in excess of $2,500.
The College of Veterinary Medicine Student Awards Committee selects scholarship and
award recipients. The 2014-15 committee members are Drs. Yeager (Chairperson), Allbaugh, Berger, Bolser, Brown, Goff, Karriker, Schleining. The committee
receives input from many other faculty and students during the process of selecting the
recipients. I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the Student Awards Committee
and the donors of the scholarships listed on the following pages.
