Frederick Douglass
Escaped from slaveryWrote: Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave (1845)
Started his own abolitionist newspaper: The North Star
Leader in abolitionist movementA powerful and talented speaker
Who Was He?
Frederick talks about how his arguments
against slavery are based on the harm
it does to the humans being enslaved.
He brings up the fact that his views are
not shared by everyone who opposes
slavery.
In the text we will be looking at…
???
[The Liberty Party] makes a clean sweep of
slavery everywhere. It denies that slaver is,
or can be legalized. It denies that the
Constitution of the United States is a pro-
slavery instrument, and asserts the power
and duty of the Federal Government to
abolish slavery in every State of the Union.
Strictly speaking, I say this is the only party
in the country which is an abolition party…
…the Liberty Party, by its position and
doctrines, and by its antecedents, is pledged
to continue the struggle while a bondman in
his chains remains to weep. Upon its
platform must the great battle of freedom be
fought out- if upon any short of the bloody
field. It must be under no partial cry of "no
union with slaveholders;" nor selfish cry of
"no more slavery extension;" but it must be,
"no slavery for man under the whole
heavens."
The slave as a man and a brother, must be the vital
and animating thought and impulse of any
movement, which is to effect the abolition of slavery
in this country. Our anti-slavery organizations must
be brought back to this doctrine, or they will be
scattered and left to wander, and to die in the
wilderness, like God's ancient people, till another
generation shall come up, more worthy to go up and
possess the land.
So… If not everyone saw things from Frederick Douglass’ point of view…
…why were they against slavery
Slavery was big-businessIt made rich whites richer, and poor whites poorerAll the good land would go to the rich slave owners
Slavery wasn’t good for industrial progressIndustrial workers could buy stuff made in their factory,
thus helping the company growSlaves didn’t get money, so they couldn’t buy stuff
Slavery pushed wages down for the working class With the ‘free’ labor source of slavery to compete with,
working class whites could only hope for very low wages Big-business slave plantations could sell their products
at lower prices than independent farmers could
Economic Reasons to Oppose Slavery
What was the big issue over new territories becoming slave
states or free states???
More slave states would mean the South would have more power in Congress.
More free states would mean the North would have more power in Congress
