The routes in this guide are suggestions to inspire you to get out and take a leisurely or adventurous walk or bike ride through the city with your friends or family. The routes were selected with safety, convenience, and visual interest in mind. Check out the full map on thereversesideofthisquidetofindmoreinformation and create your own routes!

About these Routes

The average person loses 13 poundsintheirfirstyearofbike commuting.

• Ride with your hands on the handlebars.• Stopandcheckfortrafficinbothdirections

when leaving a driveway, an alley, or a curb.• Cross at intersections, not between parked

cars.• Walk your bike across busy intersections

usingthecrosswalkandfollowingtrafficsignals.

• Ride on the right-hand side of the street, so you travel in the same direction as cars do.

• Use bike lanes, sidewalks, or designated bike routes wherever you can.

• Don’t ride too close to parked cars. Doors can open suddenly.

• Stop at all stop signs and obey street lights just as cars do.

• Ridesinglefileonthestreetwithfriends.• When passing other bikers or people on the

street, always pass to their left side, and call out “On your left!”

• Use hand signals so drivers know which way bicyclists are turning.

• See and be seen! Walkers should wear bright colors and, if walking at night, try to wearreflectiveclothing.Itisdifficultfordrivers to see walkers at night. Walkers should do anything they can to make it easier for drivers to see them.

• Use the sidewalk or walking path when it is available. If there is no path and they need to walk on the street, they should always walkagainsttraffic.

• Cross at intersections. When walking out between parked cars, drivers can’t see walkers coming.

• Always look left, right, and left again before crossing the street.
