Successful examinees receive a Chinese Proficiency Certificate
with scoring 180 out of 300 for level 3 to 6 and 120 out of 200
for level 1 and 2.
Why take the HSK
• To certify Chinese language skills when applying for a job;
• To fulfill admission requirements when applying to post
secondary educational institutions in Chinese-speaking
countries;
• To be exempt from Chinese courses at the corresponding
level at post secondary educational institutions;
• To evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and course con-
tents in educational and training institutions.
《汉语水平证书》的主要用途
1. 可为中国国内相关院校组织留学生教学工作提供
参考依据,如招生、分班授课、课程免修、学分
授予等;
2. 为政府部门、公司企业及其他各类用人机构在人
员录用、培训、晋升等决策过程中提供参考依
据;
3. 为汉语学习者了解、提高自己的汉语应用能力提
供参考依据;
4. 为评价相关教学单位、培训机构的教学或培训成
效提供参考依据。
HSK Levels for all candidates:
HSK Level 1 (一级)
• Designed for students who have learned about 150
Chinese characters and who can understand and use
some simple Chinese characters and sentences to
communicate, and prepare them for continuing their
Chinese studies.
HSK Level 2 (二级)
• Designed for students who have learned about 300
Chinese characters and who can use Chinese in a
simple and direct manner, applying it in a basic fashion
in their daily lives.
HSK Level 3 (三级)
• Designed for students of Chinese who have had 600
Chinese characters and who can use Chinese to serve
the demands of their personal lives, studies and work,
and are capable of completing most of the
communicative tasks they experience during their
Chinese tour.
HSK Level 4 (四级)
• Designed for students who have learned about 1200
Chinese characters and who can discuss a relatively
wide range of topics in Chinese and are capable of
communicating with Chinese speakers at high
standard.
HSK Level 5 (五级)
• Designed for students who have learned about 2500
Chinese characters and who can read Chinese
newspaper and magazines, watch Chinese films and
are capable of writing and delivering a lengthy speech
in Chinese.

What is HSK?
HSK is the abbreviation of Chinese Pinyin:
Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì (汉语水平考试). It is
a series of tests to assess the Chinese
language proficiency of non-native speakers.
HSK exams assess a candidate’s ability to
communicate and understand Chinese in
educational and workplace contexts.
The HSK is referenced worldwide.
HSK Suitability
HSK is suitable for external candidates and students of Chinese.
Students in schools choose the appropriate HSK exam:
HSK Level 6 (六级)
• Designed for students who have learned about 5000 or
more Chinese characters and who can easily understand
any information communicated in Chinese and capable
of smoothly expressing themselves in written or oral
form.
