ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS to do
as President of
Christian Home
& Bible School is
to watch students
succeed. This year
there has certainly been a lot for which I was able to
take notice! We are fortunate that we are constantly
adding to our curriculum and providing our
students with ever-exceeding opportunities to learn
and grow.
Some Exciting Changes:
Imagine Magazine has a new look, and it will
run on a quarterly basis
Thompson House was dedicated and opened in
October 2010
Addition of the New Media Digital
Fundamentals class
 Addition of Film Studies class
 Completed gymnasium lobby and showcase
renovation
Detailed planning is underway for a major
fundraising campaign that will be announced
in the near future. Be listening for the exciting
announcement.
We are extremely proud of the programs that are
relatively new to us but have been successful. Our
football team recently broke its previous school record
and is excited for the upcoming season. The Science
Honors Society started a paper recycling program
school-wide to make our campus more eco-friendly.
Leadership Academy has participated in two Habitat
for Humanity builds in Lake County, increasing
awareness of needs within our own community.
You may see a picture of your child and wonder, “Wow,
MY child can do that?” As teachers and faculty, there
are numerous occasions throughout the school year
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
WE CONTINUE TO BELIEVE
THAT A LEVEL OF EXCELLENCE
AND COMPASSION THAT
CHALLENGES THE MIND AND
TOUCHES THE HEART
IS WHAT SETS US APART
FROM OTHER SCHOOLS.
when we wish you could see the truly outstanding
“little moments.” We are constantly surprised at the
generosity, the kindness, and the sheer ability of the
students here at CH&BS.
We continue to believe that a level of excellence and
compassion that challenges the mind and touches
the heart is what sets us apart from other schools.
While we welcome the new, we are also extremely
proud of the longstanding traditions and history
that goes along with our school. Furthermore, it is
through constant teacher and parent involvement,
field trips, extracurricular activities, and volunteer
efforts that CH&BS is able to make such a bold claim
of excellence. We are excited about the direction of
the school, and we thank God for the new and old
faces we see on our campus.
For the children,

Founded in 1945, Christian Home and Bible School has
seen a number of additions in its 66 years of academic
excellence. With 640 students in the student body,
CH&BS has grown tremendously since its founding
(the school began with a modest 55 students). In order
to accommodate such changes, new inclusions and
fresh ideas are a welcome part of the scholastic scene.
Dr. James Moore is pleased
to announce Carly Burt
as the new Director of
Communications. Burt
is filling the position that
Suzan Jenkins vacated
when she moved back
to Fort Worth, Texas.
Burt recently returned to
Mount Dora from Baton
Rouge, Louisiana, where
she worked as a Corporate
Trainer for Smith Business
Consultants. Her return is
unique in that Burt is a 2006
graduate of CH&BS where
she was valedictorian and
class president. She set numerous athletic records as
well, particularly in track & field. One parent remarked,
“It is an amazing testimony to the quality of the school
that its’ graduates are eager and willing to return.”
While at Smith Business Consultants Burt was
responsible for recruitment, training, sales, and
customer service. Her new assignment at CH&BS
will include advertising and public relations, student
recruitment, website design, publications, and
planning special events. Burt graduated in 2009 from
Louisiana State University with degrees in International
Studies, English, and Spanish. She was among the top
5% of her graduating class and graduated early with
Distinction from the Honors College. Her most recent
accomplishment was being nominated for the Orlando
Business Journal’s Women Who Mean Business Award
for “Up and Comer” of the year.
Mick Anderson has recently
accepted the position
of Director of Church
Relations and Major Gifts
previously held by Tom
Hagan. He has two children
that were graduates of the
school in 1989 and 1991
(Chris and Kara). He has
two grandchildren and
has been married to his
wife, Gayle, for 43 years in
August.
Anderson has a
very impressive and diverse resume. He was
the President and CEO of Aloecorp, Inc., in
Denver, Colorado, as well as the Vice President of
International Sales in Lacey, Washington. As VP of
International Sales Anderson oversaw the sales
and marketing efforts for 43 international sales
representatives in 38 countries. He attended Pembroke
State College (now the University of North Carolina) on
a baseball scholarship and later joined the Air Force.
When asked how it felt to be back at CH&BS Anderson
replied, “It’s great. It’s all up-side and a blessing. It’s
absolutely super being back here after 20 years.”
Working alongside Vice President of Development
Tim Deem, Anderson’s responsibilities will include the
enhancement of church relations through visits and
fundraising activities (such as Change for Children
and regional benefit dinners) as well as speaking with
individuals about gifts to the school and home.

CH&BS Teachers
Fur ther Their Education! All of the teachers at Christian Home & Bible
School hold college degrees and are certified
in their subject area. More than half of these
teachers hold a Master’s Degree or higher. This
percentage increased on February 5 when
four teachers (3 secondary, 1 elementary)
received their Master’s Degree from the
online American College of Education. This is
an accredited eighteen month rigid program
founded by a team of prominent educators
nationwide.
Lori Hadley and Michele Baker graduated
with their Masters of Education in Educational
Leadership, and Kathy VanDingstee and
Pat Bliss graduated with their Masters of
Education in Curriculum and Instruction.
Elementary teacher Sarah Garback also
recently received her Masters of Education in
Educational Leadership from the American
College of Education (April 2010).
Headmaster Pat Todd expresses his
appreciation for all the teachers’ hard work by
stating, “I am very proud of these teachers. At
CH&BS we encourage lifelong learning and
in order to do so, we as educators must lead

J’Varzeia Rivers is an 11th
grader and comes to us from
Titusville, FL. He came to live
in Lugar Cottage in March.
Previously J’Varzeia at-
tended a large public school called Astronaut High
School where he played basketball. When asked if the
CH&BS Boys Varsity team would win a State Basket-
ball Championship with his help he replied, “Not on
my own we can’t! But this team has great determi-
nation. I think we’ll win at least a few.” J’Varzeia is
currently playing on an AAU basketball team and is
already training with the CH&BS Varsity team.
About attending school here, J’Varzeia states, “I like
it here. The people are really friendly.” Gayle Griffin,
Astronaut High School’s nurse says about the 11th
grader, “J’Varzeia shows good character and a beau-
tiful heart…he frequently puts others before himself.
He has great potential. He can become a powerful
servant for Christ.”
James Williams is an 8th
grader and comes to CH&BS
from Gainesville, FL. James
is staying at Lugar Cottage in
the boys’ home. He previously attended a Montessori
school and says about CH&BS, “It’s nice. I didn’t have
to walk as much at my old school…there weren’t as
many hills! But I like it here. The teachers are really
good and my house parents are really cool.” He has
two sisters, one at UCF and one at UF. James hopes
to attend UCF where he will study chemistry (His
favorite class is Mrs. Baker’s Science 8). While at
CH&BS he plans to participate in spring football and
basketball.

Starting in Fall 2010, churches in Florida were
encouraged to participate in “Change for Children.”
This is a bi-annual event that involves collecting
loose change in support of the 71 children living
on the CH&BS campus. On Feb. 5 several faithful
volunteers gathered to count the coins which
totaled $22,000! That is a LOT of change!!
We have two “Change for Children” drives annually,
in the Fall and in the Spring. Watch for these dates
and how you or your church can bless the lives of the
children at Mount Dora Children’s Home.

SpringWe are so blessed to have a wonderful group of people
who have helped us with spring cleaning on campus.
Over 40 Sojourners came to volunteer their time and
efforts on the CH&BS campus during the first week in
March. They spent time doing a number of activities,
including pressure washing, landscaping, painting,
and sewing.
Twenty-seven 7th
and 8th graders
from Greater Atlanta Christian School (GACS) in Atlanta, GA
were on the CH&BS
campus Feb. 18 for a
mission trip, giving up
their long President’s
Day weekend to help
others! These students
scrubbed, dusted,
swept, and raked in an effort to further beautify our
70-acre campus.
Prattville Church of Christ came from Alabama
for a week of yard work and clean up! They visited
Orange Avenue Church of Christ on Sunday, and the
rest of the week they volunteered at the Orlando soup
kitchen, Central Florida Bible Camp, and of course,
CH&BS!
The motto of Liberty City Church of Christ (Miami, FL) is “God loves you and we love you too!” They take
James 2:26 (“Faith without deeds is dead”) to heart
through service trips such as the one to our campus
in April. They assisted in various yard work tasks, as
well as in house cleaning.
To all who give of their time and resources, we
appreciate you!!

Mission: “To provide single parent families an
opportunity to achieve wholeness and stability
through a combination of education, counseling,
life coaching, biblical teaching, and mentoring so
families become healthier in all areas of development
and economically self-supporting.”
To date, CH&BS has had six single parent households
that have participated in SPOC. Brandie recently
enrolled in her first semester at Lake-Sumter
Community College where she plans to study
medical coding (On her midterms, she received an
“A” in math!). She has three children at CH&BS.
Director of Social Services Chuck Shepherd sums
up the SPOC program by stating, “Our aim with the
Single Parent Program is to empower our single
parents to raise
their children with
God’s instructions
and to model Christ
as they learn and
grow. Through
weekly spiritual

The 29th Annual Boyd Scholarship Dinner was a
great success this year! There were over 325 friends
and donors in attendance despite being held on a
weekend when many church congregations were
holding “Sweetheart Banquets.” The Dinner benefits
the Boyd Scholarship Fund, which is used to help
families that require financial assistance for their
children to attend Christian Home & Bible School. At
this February event we raised nearly $28,000. Over a
twenty-nine year period, approximately $371,915 has
been added to the Endowment Fund.
This year’s activities included dinner catered by
Vic’s Embers and a Quilt and Item Auction, as well
as several speakers. Scholarship recipient Maeghin
Mueller spoke to say Thank You and Scholarship
recipient’s mother Katie Conner spoke on the
importance of the Boyd Scholarship to her family.
Dr. Milton Sewell, Chancellor of Freed-Hardeman
University, gave the keynote address.
Some unique items were donated this year that
certainly piqued interest in the fast-paced auction.
There were kaleidoscopes, 100+ year old quilts, a
handcrafted clock and table, and a special quilt
created by the ladies of the New Smyrna Church of
Christ that contained pictures of racecars…signed by
actual NASCAR drivers!

One of the most frequent statements
we hear when talking to individuals
and families about estate planning is,
“we have not made a will, and need
someone to help us create one.” How
unfortunate, that so many people
have not taken the time to plan for
their loved ones after they leave this earth for a heavenly
home. With so much uncertainty about the economy,
the loss of retirement funds, and the condition of their
investments, it’s easy to put off making a will.
Quite simply, a will is part of a well-designed estate plan
that includes a will, living will, and power of attorney.
A will spells out who will be the beneficiaries of your
assets. A properly designed estate plan can provide a
guardian for minor children, nomination of an executor,
power of attorney, and healthcare directives. Many
people already have wills, but they should be updated
on a regular basis.
You need to revisit your estate planning every three to
five years regardless of what is going on in the stock
market or with the economy. Here are six simple
questions to help you determine if you need to create or
update your will or estate plan.
Have your finances changed? Has your family changed? Has it been more than three years since you
reviewed your plans? Have you moved to another state? Have you changed your mind about your
beneficiaries, your executor or how you would like your assets distributed? Could estate taxes shrink your estate?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s time
to review your estate plans. Let the Development Office
at CH&BS assist you in preparing your estate plans and
provide you with the “Joy of Giving.” Contact us at
352-383-0762 or at [email protected].

One of the joys that can be found in attending a multi-
age and multi-grade campus is the chance to mentor
and to learn from the other age groups. In February
Mr. Hayes Boys’ Bible class visited the 2 –3 year old
class. The older boys read stories to the children and
assisted in making
crafts. The kids
loved the attention
and interaction
from the older boys
and the secondary
students learned
the importance of
mentorship.
Mrs. Allen and Mrs. Wacaster’s 2-3 year old class
had a Valentine’s Day party on February 14th. They
celebrated with a special Valentine’s snack, passed
out Valentines to their
friends, and participated
in a math activity. They
counted candy hearts by
placing them on a num-
bered paper. Of course,
the most fun was when
they actually got to eat
the candy hearts!
HARDEN EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER
As part of the Transportation and Spring Changes
Units Mrs. Muma’s 3 year old class participated in
many exciting adventures. While learning about the
disciples’ great catch of fish, the children constructed
sailboats that were really able to float. The children
then learned about the water cycle. They learned that
water comes from God, but God gave us just enough
and we must keep reusing it. Through the story of
“Drippy the Raindrop”, the children learned the terms
evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collec-
tion. They also built Terrariums so they could ob-
serve the water cycle in the classroom. To incorpo-
rate the Bible throughout the study of the water cycle,
the children studied Noah’s Ark. They learned about
the first rainfall and God’s promise to never flood the
earth again.

In February the annual Jump Rope for Heart,
benefiting the American Heart Association, took
place at our track. Teachers, parents, faculty,
and elementary students came together to raise
awareness for the cause. The students had a great
time jumping, racing, bouncing, and sliming the
teachers! Incentives included the following:
School goal $3,000: If
reached, Coach Stillwell
dresses as a Seminole
fan and Coach Simmons
as a Gator fan. Slime A Teacher: Students who
bring in $65 or more
get to join a kickball
game and party on the baseball field. Honor Hearts: Every $50 turned in for a class, a heart will be
added to a chart outside the office. The class with the
most hearts will get extra free play day/party. Top 10 Online: Top 10 students to raise money online will
get a prize out of the grab bag.
The goal of $3,000 was exceeded and the grand total
came out to $4,777!
Mrs. Poyet’s 2nd grade
class raised the most
with $1,422.10. Angelic
Hernandez was the
top student raiser
with $1,345. Great job,

Hear t“Bubbles”Featured in the Scripps National Spelling Bee Newsletter on Feb. 22 entitled “Great Idea”
Christine Boress, a fourth grade teacher at Christian
Home & Bible School in Mount Dora, Florida, recently
shared an activity she does with her students to help
them practice their spelling. Mrs. Boress and her
students play a game called Bubbles, similar to the
activity in an earlier Teacher’s BEEhive, Sparkle and
Fizz. To play Bubbles, all students sit on their desks
and Mrs. Boress says a word. The first student says the
first letter of the word, followed by the second student
saying the next letter. Play continues from one
student to the next until the word has been spelled
completely. If the word has been spelled correctly, the
next student says “bubbles,” says the word, spells the
word, and repeats the word again. When a student
says the wrong letter, he or she is out and has to sit
down in his or her seat and participate by trying to
spell the rest of the words on paper.
“That way they remain engaged, especially if I collect
their papers and count their efforts as part of a class
work or participation grade. The kids love it. The
winners or last ones standing always get a small
prize.”

other individuals and said of her victory, “I was very
excited to win. I like to act and sing because it is fun,
and I am able to express myself when I sing or play
an acting role.” One
memorable part of the
conference for those
in attendance was the

Keegan Neverette, a freshman here at CH&BS, was
recently selected as a winner in the Our Military Kid’s
2011’s Star Power event. Our Military Kids is a nonprofit

for children with parents in the National Guard and
Reserves. The organization has provided more than
17,000 grants to children of these military children so
they can take part in extracurricular
activities such as sports,
fine arts, or tutoring
programs. Being a winner
means demonstrating
ongoing support to their
families, communities, and
schools during a parent’s
deployment in addition
to showing excellence in
one of the aforementioned
extracurriculars.
Neverette will travel to Washington, D. C., in
April. He will perform by singing and playing his

Four Cheerleaders Named All-American!
Fall/Winter All District AthletesNEW FOOTBALL COACH& RECORD
MDB has had a truly great year with sports. A number of the
athletes have been named to the Lake & Sumter All District
list for their particular sport and deserve recognition. For
Cross-country, Blaine Ramsdell and Cristina McKinney
were both named 1st Team in addition to being the Orlando
Sentinel Runners of the Year.
The Varsity Boys Basketball team had three athletes named
and they are Raymond Bernard, Josh Ellis, and Zac Ward.
The Varsity Girls Basketball team was a very young team
with no seniors, but freshman Hayley Todd and junior
Lauren Kilts both were awarded. Lauren Kilts was also
All District for Volleyball, as was Sarah Montgomery. The
Varsity Girls Golf team had two athletes named: Melissa Hill and Valentina Rodriguez. For Varsity Boys Golf, Charlie Stubbs was named to the 1st Team.
This honor entitles each All-American an invitation
to perform in the Macy’s Day Parade and in England
in front of the Queen. The cheerleaders selected from
MDB are (from left) Tara Staton, Lauren Murphy-Gerling, Nathalie Chang, and Kaylee DeLeon.

Stephanie “Skip” Williams signed a softball
scholarship on February 4th with Seminole State
College. Stephanie is the second player from MDB
in two years to sign with Seminole State, and it is
no coincidence. Last year Stephanie’s close friend
Jessica Gipson signed for the Raiders as well. Coach
Robert Scott, who has been the Bible School’s softball
coach for the past three years, played a key role in
helping Stephanie receive the scholarship, but he
says no source was as paramount as Jessica’s signing
the year before.
Stephanie plays second base for the Lady Bulldogs and
according to Scott, “Skip is a great second baseman
and hitter. She’s an All-District and All-State player,
and she really has no weak spots.” This is high praise
from a coach who has over twenty years of coaching
experience, three of which have been at MDB where,
“the players are young, but more dedicated and more
serious about the sport. That makes it fun to coach.”
Stephanie received several other scholarship offers,
but her desire to remain near her family and MDB
friends as well as participate in the dynamic program
at SSC (The Raiders had a third place state and
conference finish last year) outweighed any other
option.

We had a great turn out
for the Alumni Golf
Tournament on Feb. 26 with
81 players. The tournament,
sponsored by the MDB
Alumni Association,
hosted these players
at the Mount Dora
Golf Association. The
team of Mr. Moore,
Mr. Leimberger, Mr.
Youngblood, and
Mr. Miller won the
event. The Stults team
from Winter Haven won
second place. The $6,000 in
prize money was handed out
to all five placing foursomes and
ALL FIVE TEAMS donated their winnings
back to the Alumni Fund. These funds
will benefit families who need financial
assistance for multiple children to attend
Christian Home & Bible School. Thanks to all
who came out to play; it was for a great cause!

On Friday, January 7, seniors Joshua Hooper and
Sarah Montgomery were elected by their peers as
this year’s Homecoming King and Queen. Former
king Tyrone Johnson and former queen Paige
Dyjack were present to pass on their crowns and
scepters.
Other Homecoming representatives were Antarius
Holley and Tara Staton (12th grade), Blaine Ramsdell
and Chloe Rider (12th grade), Geren Albury and
Melissa Hill (11th grade), Austin Parker and Nathalie
Chang (10th grade), and Zachary Brock and Madison
Fox (9th grade).
The presentation of the royalty and the basketball
games that followed were the conclusion to an
excitement-filled Spirit week. The theme for this
year’s Homecoming was Chinese New Year, and the
painted dragons, paper lanterns, lighted panels, and
decorated parasols created a beautiful arrangement
in the newly renovated gymnasium.
