A "STARTER"/FILE OF FREE OCCUPATIONAL LITERATURE

This edition of A "STARTER" FILE OF FREE OCCUPATIONAL LITERATURE has beencompletely revised in order to provide an optimum amount of information and.assistance to young men and women about to assimilate and use career informa-

tion. Rapid developments in the labor market and the resulting outgrowth,of'reef literature during the past several years eeflect the need for an -up -

dated listing of career information.

This is a "starter" file in two senses: (1) the file may be an initial step .

toward building a complete file of free occupational literature and (g) single

.15 leaflets for each of about, 1000 occupations may be .used -to initiate a more

thorough career investigation,

This revised bibliography of free career literature is designed for use byhigh'school and col/lege-students and their advisors in career planning., Theauthors hope this edition will also serve as a source of useful information

for parents, teacers and guidance counselors. As'in the last edition, A -

.wide variety of f ee occupational material is condepsed-. -We have attempted tominimize the pressures of collecting, the awkwardness of using and the over-

whelming monitoring of oversized files of bccupationi31 literature.

I -.

This "starter" file contains literature which may be used as reliable resources

for a vast majority of career counseling needs %likely to be encountered. All

117 pamphlets listed may be kept in portable files or in less than half a

file drawer. :Til this m er, a small, Selective file can be readily available

without interfering with, r terminating a counseling session for a trip to the

library,/

/

/ /

i

As in the previous edition, selection criteria were carefully considered,

though admitedly biased. Our bias ,was directly related to the career t

interests and needs of our Client population-=those4ho hold mainly middle

clas valued and levels of aspiration. In addition1 they are generally te-

tween'the ages of 15 and 20, and4are oriented toward a non-rilral lifestyle.

. --.

One pamphlet was selected for each career field on h basis of the-followin

concerns:,

I

I

1. At least one copy available free upon request.1

2. Recency of publication. (It is surprising haw'many pamphlets do nitindicate publication date.)' All of those selected are less than five

years old. .

3. Published by a professional and/or other reputable source..

4, Author professionally qualified. (We regret that a large.number oforganizations do not give a by-line to the person who actually

researched and wrote theme pamphlet.)

5. Reading level appropriate for high school and college students.

If more than one publication fort a particular career field Vas available, we

ranked each on the basis of the following criteria:

1. Accuracy, balance and objectivity. (Avoidance of a recruitment tonein free occupational literature is not always to be found.) ----\

2. Content and adaptability. (Publibations-with breadth of informationand applicable toftseveral careers; were favored.) ,

.

Style. (The pamphlet must be,stiMulating.)/

,..-

ForMat. (Attractiveness was considered to add value. Color plates

and a/high level of graphic design make the literature listed more

actualizing for the reader. Graphics that illustrate implicationsof the material for all groups within our society are highly valuable.)}

/

/ Some career fields relevant to our client population are not covered by ourselec lons,---Their exclusion from this file may be for dne of two'reasonsi

(1) literature failed t6 meet the National Vocational Guidance Associationguidelines, or (2) our selection criteria were not met.

1

Each listing includes name of publication, date of publication, and name and

addre s of the'organization from which free materials may be requested; '$ecause

read s may wish to consult the Dictionary\of Occupational Titles (DOT) and/or

Occu ational Outlook Handbook for furtherinformation about a specified career

area, we have also furnishedthe"DOT three-digit occupational group arrangement

of titles and codes.

Sine the, last edition, the senior author has found several opportunities toeffectively use "mini-files" of_free occupational literature on the univer-si y campus. ,As part of the counseling "readiness" dormitory program at ama or university, mini-files are strategically located in the dormitory units

and the student union building. At a community college nearby, mini -filesare found in the College library, student center and some classrooms.

In reviewing the suggested reading list, counselors will find a listing ofvocational bibliographies and sources of career information which can beparticularly suitable,.for high school and, college students.

1

After reviewing this "starter" file, the counselor may wish to add to his or

her file by includingnexpensive career literature. Remember, hOwever, that

this "starter" file is just a beginning. Don't throw away that foupikawqr,..;,

file cabinet, your Occupational Outlook Handbook, your ydlumes oftfie Dictibna'y,

of Occupational Titles, your Enc..!')pedia of Career and Vocational Guidance oz(
