Managing Financial Risks
The question of whether firms are using derivativesfor hedging or speculation is important in light ofattempts by financial regulators to curb the use ofOver the Counter (OTC) derivatives as a response tothe 2008 financial crisis, concerns about systemicrisk in the financial sector and more recently theprospect of the introduction of the financialtransactions tax. Using data provided by CFOs intheir annual reports this presentation will examine theeffects of derivative use on the probability of financialdistress for a large sample of UK non-financial firms. The presentation will examine whether the use ofderivatives by UK CFOs is associated with areduction in their firms’ credit risk. The presentationwill touch on the role played by interest rate andforeign currency derivatives and will examine bothshort-term and long-term financial risks. Thepresentation will be of interest to public policy makersand financial regulators as well corporates.
