CENTRIFUGAL PUMP TROUBLESHOOTING CHART

NO PROBLEM / SYMPTOM CAUSE CORRECTION

1 No liquid being pumped Suction lined plugged/ clogged Clear obstrcutionsPump not primed Reprime pump Impeller clogged Try back flushing to clear impeller Incorrect rotation Reverse motor leads to achieve

2 Pump not producing rated flow or pressure

Air leak at stuffing box Tighten packing/ replace mech seal Air leak at gasket Replace with new gasket and proper

gasket sealant if required

Impeller partly clogged Back Flush Low suction head Open suction valve all the way and check

suction piping 3 Hot bearing Improper lubrication Check for proper grease or oil and

relubricate Improper alignment Realign pump and motor

4 Pump Vibrates Poor alignmet Align motor and pump shafts Worn bearings Replace bearings Pump is cavitating Recalculate pump/ check system

attributes Unbalanced impeller If due to foreign material, back flus; If

impeller is worn, replace Broken parts on impeller of shaft Replace impeller

5 Pump begin to pump and then stops

Air pocket in suction line Change piping to eliminate air pocketing

Air leak in suction line Plug the leak Pump not primed properly Reprime pump

6 Motor amperage draw is excessive

Rotating parts are binding Check rebuilding procedures and correct interfering parts

Pump is pumping too much liquid Machine impeller to smaller size Stuffing box packing is too tight Readjust

7 Leakage at stuffing box Worn mechanical seal parts Replace seal Shaft sleeve (if used) is scored or cut Replace sleeve with new, or remachine

and replace Packing improperly adjusted Tighten or replace packing material
