Welcome A Letter from the heads of the Utah Physical
Therapy Association
1
Lance Dougher, DPT
UPTA President
Welcome to the Utah Physical Therapy Association’s 43rd Annual Fall Conference!
Allow me to be the first to thank you for attending our Fall Conference. With your support,
we are once again able to provide nationally recognized speakers. Working together, we
are able to meet our strategic goals as a State Chapter for continuing education.
Providing high quality evidence-based physical therapy is what we do. We have many
strong physical therapy practitioners in Utah and UPTA is proud to assist in providing
conferences that keep us all on the cutting edge.
UPTA is joining forces with the APTA #choosept campaign. Our focus continues to be on
reaching out to the public and educating them on the benefits of physical therapy. We
appreciate your active involvement in making this happen and ask if you have an interest
in serving to become involved in the leadership within the UPTA. We are also seeking your
input regarding continuing education including your suggestions for national international
presenters that you would like to hear from at our conferences. This level of continuing
education will provide the resources to keep Utah a top location for physical therapy
practice.
We appreciate your efforts to improve your own skills through attending this conference
and choosing this avenue to receive some of your continuing education. We hope you will
have the opportunity to network, connect with , and build strong, positive relationships
with your colleagues from around the state. We are excited to bring great speakers to
our conference this year who will provide valuable information to strengthen physical
therapy practice within the state. We hope you enjoy these presentations from excellent
physical therapists and presenters. Your participation in this conference will earn 12 .5
continuing education units (CEU’s) and 1 ethics CEU.
Thank you again for your support!
Mark Walker, PT, PhD

"CLINICAL DECISION MAKING IN THE
INTEGRATION OF MANUAL THERAPY FOR THE
PAIN SCIENCE PHYSICAL THERAPIST”
Orthopedic TrackCourse Overview
This course is designed to apply the latest evidence in the emerging area of pain
neuroscience and advanced knowledge of orthopaedic manual physical therapy to
assist evidence-informed clinicians in clinical decision-making. Participants will learn
about current evidence and apply themes to case-based scenarios to assist in their
clinical reasoning. The course will focus on active and adapting learning approaches
to help engage the participant and encourage discussion. The goal of the course is
to provide the learner the tools needed to assimilate new examination and
intervention strategies to a variety of populations in the outpatient orthopaedic
clinic.
Course Speaker: Chris Keating, DPT
Chris grew up in Cherry Hill and has spent his career serving the community he
lives in. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson University in 2009 with a Doctorate
in Physical Therapy and Rutgers in 2006 with a BA in General Science. Chris is a
Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists after
graduating from Regis University in 2016. He is the Director of Specialty
Programs, Industrial Rehab Medicine, and Education in addition to the Clinical
Director of Marlton. Chris is an adjunct professor and clinical faculty for Drexel
University, Arcadia University, Temple University, Thomas Jefferson University,
and Evidence In Motion Orthopedic Residency and Doctorate Programs. Chris has
served on the American Physical Therapy Association of NJ Board of Directors
and has presented research at national conferences and journals. He is an
Orthopedic Board-Certified Clinical Specialist and certified in Mechanical
Diagnosis and Therapy, Graston Techniques and trained in Trigger-Point Dry
Needling. Chris is passionate about providing the highest quality conservative
orthopedic care to maximize performance using a evidence-based, patient-
centered approach. 5

"THE SCIENCE OF FALLS PREVENTION"
Neurologic TrackCourse Overview:
What is the difference between screening and testing? What is the science of
imbalance? What are the differences between unsteadiness, imbalance, dizziness,
lightheadedness and vertigo? How do I document to prove my worth, my role, or
this patient’s potential? What is the evidence for helping someone improve
balance? What is the best method to select the most sensitive and responsive
balance test for each patient? What cognitive behavioral and psychological
influences could be involved with this person? The answers to these questions
and more are in this seminar intended for advanced dizziness management-
differential diagnostics and treatment understanding mechanisms of imbalance
and ultimately fall risk beyond the vestibular system. Expect practical techniques,
readily applied to the clinic, incorporating current evidence and revealing future
advances in balance and fall prevention.
Course Speaker: Mike Studer, PT, MHS, NCS, CEEAA, CWT
Mike is the president and co-owner of Northwest Rehabilitation Associates in
Oregon - the proud employer of several BYU, U of U and Utah State alumni! Mike
has been the vice-president of the American Physical Therapy Association’s
Neurology Section and has been chair of three different special interest groups at
a national level. He has been board-certified as a Clinical Specialist in Neurologic
Physical Therapy since 1995 and has published over 30 articles and multiple book
chapters on topics ranging from cognitive rehabilitation, stroke, balance,
Parkinson’s and health policy. He has been an invited speaker at many universities,
national and international venues since 1992, lecturing in nearly every state and
over 10 different international engagements during this span.Mike holds the
distinction as being the only PT in the US to be recognized with the national award
for clinical excellence in two different categories, neurology and geriatrics. On a
personal note, Mike is the world record holder for underwater treadmill marathon,
an avid tennis player, triathlete and marathoner; a father of three, and proud
sponsor of many local Salem-area charities with his wife, Diane! 7

"ORTHOSES FOR CHILDREN: FOUNDATIONAL PRINCIPLES
AND EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE"
Pediatric Course & Schedule
Dr. Martin received a BA in Athletic Training from Purdue University in 1987, her MS in Physical Therapy
from University of Indianapolis in 1990, and Doctor of Health Science from University of Indianapolis in
2003. She is currently a full Professor at University of Indianapolis. Her clinical background includes
early intervention and pediatric acute care. Dr. Martin teaches the pediatric DPT content at the
University of Indianapolis, and her research efforts have focused on orthoses and children with
hypotonia. Dr. Martin is currently Chair of the Education Committee and member of the Academy of
Pediatric Physical Therapy Movement System Task Force.
Course Speaker: Dr. Kathy Martin, PT
This one-day course will review how typically developing infants learn to walk, the basic principles of
typical gait, and relevant motor learning and motor development theories that help describe the
process of learning to walk. Foundational concepts for orthotic intervention for children with gait
deficiencies and the current evidence for orthotic efficacy for children with cerebral palsy and
children with hypotonia will be discussed. Gaps in our knowledge base will also be identified.
Strategies for managing these gaps using the foundational concepts of motor learning and gait will
be explored to provide a framework for orthotic decision-making.
