This past month the world has been enthralled by
the 33 Chilean miners trapped underground for so long
a time. The nation of Chile found itself on the center
stage of the world’s news programs. While several media
pundits stated that the rescue operation was a combina-
tion of 75% science, and 25% miracle (The Wall Street
Journal, October 14th, 2010), many missed the main
point altogether. And what was the main point? Oft
times a calamity provides the opportunity to be a “good
neighbor”.
What appeared to be an insurmountable tragedy
may now be viewed as an opportunity for many differ-
ent agencies from several countries to cooperate in an
opportunity to love and serve the trapped miners by
their rescue. In a similar fashion, the words of the Apos-
tle Paul to the Church at Galatia illustrate the relation-
ship between the individual and the opportunities which
God has placed before you, your gifts, and the neighbor.
The events that you and I may observe only as hap-
penstance, your God uses to lay before you an oppor-
tunity to love and serve the neighbor. The Apostles’
encouragement to the Church at Galatia: ‘Therefore, as
we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to
those who are of the household of faith’; does not fall
from the heavens, but is rooted in the context of Gala-
tians Chapter 6.
Let us briefl y examine the text with the admonitions
highlighted as the Apostle proceeds with presenting his point.
Galatians 6:1- (NKJ), ”Brethren, if a man is overtaken
in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one
in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you
also be tempted. (2) Bear one another’s burdens, and so
fulfi ll the law of Christ….(6) Let him who is taught the
word share in all good things with him who teaches.
(7) Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; For he who
sows to his fl esh will of the fl esh reap corruption, but he
who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting
life. (9) And let us not grow weary while doing good,
for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.”
Martin Luther once said: “God does not need your
good deeds, but your neighbor does!”
The real issue of being thankful is a Christ–centered
issue because it involves the forgiveness of sins. A simple
way to express this might be: Because God has forgiven
you, you may forgive the neighbor. Because God has
cared for you, you may care for the neighbor. Because
God has provided for your needs, you may care also for
the neighbor’s needs.
As you consider your blessings in this season of
Thanksgiving, may you, under the love and mercy of
God, consider the opportunities which God has placed in
your path: to love and care for the neighbor, doing good
as good has been given to you.
In His name I remain:
