Campbellsport School Boardmended the board stickwith just two classes in thesixth grade. They didn’t likethe idea of the split classfor these grade levels.

“You are still going tohave bigger classes,”Strand said. “Schedulingwould be a nightmare andwith scheduling you loseeducation time. We arerecommending two largeclasses.”

Strand explained thatthe last time CES had asplit fifth and sixth gradeclass, it worked out fine.Since then, they haveadded a literacy block andsome other things. Be-cause of this, the schedul-ing problems that would becreated having a class withboth fifth and sixth gradestudents would not be agood thing academically.

Board members agreedand again, no motion wasmade to change thestaffing plan. This meansthat next year CES willhave three fifth gradeclasses and two sixthgrade classes. The sixthgrade rooms are expectedto have about 31 studentseach, which is fairly largebut Strand thought it wouldbe workable.

After these big decisionswere made, Jay Miller,

board president, startedtalking with the boardabout an advisory commit-tee to come up with ashort-term and a long-termplan for the facilities in thedistrict. According toMiller’s plan, a recommen-dation on the reconfigura-tion of the elementaryschools will be proposedno later than January 7,2013. A long-term plan forthe junior/senior highbuilding would be ready byJuly 1, 2013.

Once these proposalsare done, the board willthen hold more listeningsessions. They hope toget a lot of feedback fromthe residents and busi-ness people of the district. After the listening ses-sions, the board will con-tinue to look at the planand make a definite deci-sion on the future of thebuildings in the district.

Miller would like thecommittee to consist ofJim McCready who wouldbe the chair. He would bejoined by fellow boardmembers Mike Weiss, chair of the facilities com-mittee, and Deb Senn, chair of the curriculumcommittee.

Administrator Dan Olsonwould be on the commit-

tee along with one buildingprincipal in the district.Miller would like oneteacher from CES, EESand the junior/senior highschool.

Finally, he asked for fourmembers at large. Thesemembers would be resi-dents of the district, par-ents in the district, and/orbusiness people in the dis-trict. Miller would like peo-ple from different areas ofthe district with differentbackgrounds and needs tohelp look at all angles inthis proposal.

This group would startmeeting as soon as possi-ble to start working on theplans. The board ap-proved the formation ofthe committee at thisboard meeting. At the nextboard meeting on Monday,May 7, the board will offi-cially approve the mem-bers of the committee.

“They will hold openmeetings, so anyone isinvited,” Miller said.

He encouraged peopleto attend the meetings tolisten to what the commit-tee talks about and to giveideas to committee mem-bers.

Olson suggested updat-ing the enrollment projec-tion so the committee has

a better idea of the possi-ble student population inthe future. A formal studywas done in the district afew years ago. Olson stat-ed that this study could beupdated fairly easily.

“Once it (a plan) comesto the board, then wewould schedule listeningsession, staff meetings, whatever we need,” Millersaid.

Anyone who is interest-ed in sitting on this com-mittee should contact JayMiller.

The board approved, with regrets, the retire-ment of Candace Roth. She has been a mathe-matics teacher in the dis-trict for 30 years.

Board members ap-proved the hiring of TammySchunck as a high schoolmath teacher and NicoleStern as a junior high mathteacher. Olson explainedthat the district had justcompleted final interviewsfor the junior high mathteacher position when theyreceived Roth’s notice ofretirement. They decided tooffer the high school posi-tion right away because thetop two candidates for thejunior high position wereexceptional and qualifiedfor the position.
