THEME
• The message of the literature
• Sometimes it is a lesson learned
• Sometimes it is an overall theme--such as love
• Can usually be stated in ONE sentence!
SETTING
• Setting is the where of the story
• Setting is also the when of the story
• Time and Place
CHARACTERS
• Characters are the people, animals, etc that drive the action
• Static characters don’t change
• Dynamic characters change and grow throughout the story
• Flat characters are one-dimensional--no depth
• Round characters are well-developed.
CONFLICT
• Two types of conflict• INTERNAL--person vs.
self--all conflict inside one character
• EXTERNAL--• Person vs. person• Person vs. nature• Person vs. fate• Person vs. society• Person vs. machine
POINT OF VIEW
• From what viewpoint the story is told
• First person-the narrator is a character involved in the story--”I”
• Third person limited--the narrator is outside of the events--watching and reporting-does not know the thoughts of the characters
• Third person omniscient-knows the thoughts of one or more characters.
ADDITIONAL ELEMENTS…
• TONE--the author’s emotional view of the events and characters
• WORD CHOICE--denotation--dictionary definition--connotation--the emotional impact of the word--negative, positive or neutral
• FORESHADOWING-hints about what is to happen
