Thanksgiving Baskets—We will again be giving away
Thanksgiving baskets to those in the Dubuque community
who request a Thanksgiving meal for their family. The KCs
at St. Columbkille have generously offered to provide 100
turkeys and bags of potatoes to accompany the baskets. So
we are asking for parish families between St. Joseph the
Worker and St. Columbkille to provide the other items in
the gift boxes. They include the following: stuffing, turkey gravy, yams,
cranberry sauce, canned green beans and cream of mushroom soup, corn or
other vegetable, jello, canned fruit, and a $10 Hy-Vee gift card (for the recipient’s
purchase of a pie and/or dinner rolls). If you would like to provide the entire
dinner menu listed above for a family, please put it in a sturdy box and return it
to either church by Monday, November 14th. Thanks for your
anticipated generosity.
Poinsettias are again being sold for $15 to decorate our worship space for the Christmas season. If you would like to purchase a plant in memory of someone, please send a check payable to St. Columbkille Church to the
parish office before December 6th.
The 8th Grade Mazzuchelli Middle School students attending the March
for Life 2017 would like to say THANK YOU to our St. Columbkille Parish

Dear Parishioners,
Jesus teaches us that His disciples will be persecuted as a
prelude to His return. Sacred Scripture reminds us today that
through faithful perseverance we will be victorious when our
Lord Jesus returns in glory! As we await that Day, we
conscientiously fulfill our discipleship with Christ Jesus. This is
our testimony.
Easy excuses come to everyone. Falling away from Christ is
frequent. Lifestyles, lies and illusions create cultures of chaos. Is
this the end of the world? Is this the end of our personal world
as we know it? One way or another, we will have to face death.
Let us do so in the good graces of Jesus Christ, our Lord and
Savior!
Blessings upon you,
Fr. Gabriel
Vocations Corner—November 13, 2016 The Vocations Committee invites you to pray for Vocations, especially those to Priest-

Growing In Virtue
“By your perseverance, you will secure your lives.” Luke 21:19 One of
the best ways to grow in holiness and in our ability both to recognize and to
follow God’s will, is to strive to grow in virtue. This of course may seem like
an obvious statement, but allow me to explain it a little deeper. Virtue can
be defined as “Habituated good action.” In other words, virtue is a good
action that has been chosen and performed over and over to the point that
it becomes habitual or second nature. This then allows us to just naturally
act in such a way that would please God, sometimes without even being all
that tempted to turn the wrong way simply because the good action has
been engrained in us. Virtue is a really good thing? Here comes the hard
part: performing the actual habituating! In order for something to become
a habit it has to be something that we do over and over and over again.
Thus, growing in virtue begins with saying Yes to God and His will in lots of
little things, because it helps us practice and engrain how to say yes. If on
the other hand we frequently let little opportunities to serve or please God
go by, simply because they seem insignificant, guess what we’re in fact doing?
We’re habituating saying No. This is never a good thing. So, if you want to
grow in virtue and in your ability to say yes to God’s ultimate plan for your
life, begin by saying yes in little ways today so that you can continue to grow
in virtue!
