VIKING SHIPBy Peter
How Do Vikings travel So Safely?
They have good strong longboats that can carry many men
They have sturdy sails that doesn’t rip often.
What makes long boats so safe
Vikings were excellent shipbuilders so the boat was strong
The boat had a keel The ship had a low mast and a small sail Good ship building technique
What is a keel
A keel is the long bottom part of a ship that allows the ship to be tall and wide and not sink. The keel makes the ship steady in water and not flip over by a small wave
Why does the ship need a shot sail and a small mast?
If a ship has a short mast the weight will decrease so the base wont break through in serious conditions.
The small sail wont get affected by too much wind on very windy days at sea, and can wobble without taking in any water
Mast
Sail
Building teqnique
1 Vikings make keel first usually out of oak.2 They make the sides using long
planks(strakes)3Inner ribs and cross beams are added for
strength4Oar holes are cut out, rudder is attached
to the back and a large block is cut out to hold the mast steady
Sails are attached and are coated with animal fat for water proof.
Vikings were excellent navigators
Vikings were excellent navigators so they did not get lost
They knew the speed of their boat by their feeling
They knew when a small or big wave was going to come
What I Learned
I did not know anything about ships except that it had a mast and a sail
This was the first time I heard of a keel or saw how a boat was made
Why is this important?
This is important because people who make boats use some of these methods to build boats
They use keels They know how to make a boat that
doesn’t sink
