• An organization serves one or several customer segments – Mass market (ex. Consumer electronics sector) vs Niche
market (ex. Supplier-buyer relationships)
– Segmented (Micro Precision system: Watch industry, the medical industry, the industrial automation sector)
– Diversified (unrelated customer Segments with different needs and problems): Cloud computing services unit in Amazon.com,
– Multi-sided platform: • A credit card company: credit card holders and merchants

Value Propositions
• VP is the reason why customers turn to one company over another.
• It solves a customer problem or satisfies a customer need.
• Each VP consists of a selected bundle of products and/or services that caters to the requirements of a specific customer segment
• In conclusion, VP is an aggregation, or bundle, of benefits that a company offer customers
• Some VPs may be innovative and represent a new offer. Others may be similar to existing market offers bt with added features and attributes

• VP may be quantitative, e.g. price, speed of service or
• Qualitative, e.g., design, customer experience
• Examples: – Newness: technology related, cell phones,
– Performance: faster PCs, more disk storage, better graphics IaaS
– Customization and Co-creation: allows for customized products and services, while still taking advantage of economies of scale.

Key Resources, Key Activities and Key Partnerships. – Cost driven: minimizing costs wherever possible – Value driven: Premium value Propositions and a high degree of
personalized services – Economy of Scale: Cost advantages that a business enjoys as its
output expands. Average cost per unit to fall as output rises. – Economies of scope: Cost advantages that a business enjoys due
to a larger scope of operations, the same marketing activities or Distribution Channels may support multiple products.

Google’s Business Model
• VP of providing extremely targeted text advertising globally over the web. – The ads are displayed alongside search results when people use the google
search engine. – Google ensures that only ads relevant to the search term are displayed.. The
service is attractive to advertisers because it allows them to tailor online campaigns to specific searches and particular demographic targets.
– VP to advertisers depend heavily on the number of customers it attracts to it web site. (Web based email, Google maps, and Picasa: online photo album)
