About this Manual
This manual introduces ThalliumLine Band Selective Am-pliers (BSA) from AdCoCom, it provides product infor-
mation as well as instructions for using the basic product
package and available options.
It should be kept in a safe place for reference for the life
of this equipment. This manual will not be amended by the
issue of individual revised pages. Instead, any revision will
be a complete reissue.
If passing a BSA to a third party, please make sure to also
provide the relevant documentation.
This manual is addressed to engineering staffs and service
technicians charged with installation of mobile equipment.
This manual supposes that the user has a good workingnowledge of mobile transmission technology in general.
The manual is divided into the following major sect ions:
Introduction to manual and product
Conguration software functions
Additional information
An included Installation Instruction informs about the as-
embling of a BSA.
Further copies of these manuals can be ordered from the

roduct Description
BSAs of the AdCoCom ThalliumLine are ampliers in the800 MHz or
900 MHz frequency range
of Cellular 800/AMPS or GSM mobile networks.
The BSA amplied frequency range can be moved in its
boundaries. Selected frequencies are amplied - appropri-
ate to the assigned frequencies of the operator.
BSAs are suited for the use as a PickUp Repeater: They
connect a Base Transmitter Station (BTS) of an operator
ith any in-building coverage solution. The connection
between a BTS and the BSA is possible via cable or alter-
natively via a pickup antenna. In direction to the mobile theBSA is connected to an indoor antenna or to an active (for
example AdCoCom ArgonLine) or passive (for example
AdCoCom HeliumLine) In-Building Coverage system.
BSAs have no integrated antenna.
The conguration of a BSA has to be performed with a
indows Personal Computer with a special (provided)
oftware. The BSA has to be connected to the serial port.

Safety Remarks
OperationManual-ThalliumLineBSA
afety Remarks
The product has been developed and manufactured according to all relevant safety stan-dards. Observing the instructions for safety and operations mentioned in the manual using
he BSA does not cause any hazardous situation for man or matters.
The setting into operation and maintenance of the BSA shall only be performed by quali-
ed personnel.
Its not necessary to open the BSA during regular operation. Operations on the internal
hardware shall be performed by qualied AdCoCom personnel only. Unqualied opera-
ions on hard- and software as well as neglecting the safety notes stated on the device
may lead to personal or material damage.
All relevant safety and accident prevention instructions have to be observed during com-
missioning, operation and maintenance. All safety regulations and accident preventioninstructions according to the specic operation scenario have to be observed.
The BSA shall be used only for the range of operations mentioned in this manual. Any
other usage or operation will be treated as not agreed.
Loosening the bolted fastening on the top of the BSA affects unwished radiations and may
lead to functional deciency.
The heat development on the backside of the BSA can reach up to 70 degree Celsius.
The unit complies to the requirements of IP 54.
Before setting into operation, check conformity of the voltage range the BSA is specied
or and the provided power supply.
ue to the radiated heat make sure not to touch the BSAs housing during and directly
fter the operation.!24012887c-BSAengl.indd 16.07.2004, 16:299

Getting Started
OperationManual-ThalliumLineBSA
etting Started
The BSA is pre-congured for the immediate use in a mo-bile network without any further congurations.
Use two coaxial N-9 cables to connect the BSA to an
antenna or IBC system as well as to the BTS. Connect the
BSA to the power supply using a coaxial BNC cable.
The BSA needs a power supply with a voltage range of 12
o 30 Volt, 3.0 Ampere. Or the BTS supplies the voltage via
he RF connector.
The BSA has four LEDs, indicating the operational status
see page 13).
To congure the BSA via the serial port of any Windows
5, 98, NT, 2000 or XP computer you have to install the
BSA conguration software tool.
Connect the BSA with your computer using a serial DB-9
emale-female cable and start the BSA conguration tool
see page 12).
efore installing make sure you have read the software
icense agreement (see Appendix A of this Manual). Please
ote that the installing of the BSA controlling software pre-
umes that you agree to the terms of this software license
greement.

The BSA has four LEDs on its front side:
- Status
- Downlink Automatic Level Control
- Uplink Automatic Level Control
- DC at Antenna Port
Additional to their functions the LEDs indicate the correct
power supply of the BSA (Status, Downlink and Uplink
ALC LEDs are green).
The top LED indicates the functional status of the BSA.
f the function status is negative (LED is red), make a reset
y unplugging the power connection of the BSA for ateast 10 seconds. In the next step connect the BSA with a
ersonal computer and read out the actual values from the
SA with the conguration software.
The second LED indicates the Automatic Level Control
ALC) activation of the downlink. When it is active, the
BSA gets an unexpected high RF signal from the BTS.
The ALC adjusts the signal down.
The third LED indicates in parallel to the second LED
he activation of the Uplink ALC (for the signals up to the
BTS).
The fourth and last LED indicates the power at the an-enna port.

oftware Installation
The conguration of the BSA is performed using the con-
guration software on a standard Windows PC. The PC
and the BSA are connected via the serial port .
You can use any standard serial cable (NO Zero Modem)
with DB-9 female connectors on both ends to connect the
BSA with a PC.
The conguration software is supplied on a CD-ROM with
the BSA . Please ask for another media, if a oppy disk or
email attachment version is required.
efore installing make sure you have read the software
icense agreement (see Appendix A of this Manual).lease note that the installing of the BSA controlling soft-
ware presumes that you agree to the terms of this soft-
ware license agreement.
For the software installation start your Windows PC.
Minimum requirements: Windows 98 or higher, Pentium
processor, 8 MB RAM, 2MB hard disk space, serial port,
CD-ROM (or oppy disk, internet access).
Put the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
Open the CD-ROM with the Windows Explorer.
Run the setup.exe application and follow the instructions.
Install the software on the local hard disk.
When exiting the application, the current settings are
aved in an ini-le, BSA... .ini.

BSA and to write own settings into the BSA.
The conguration software of the BSA 800 and BSA 900
have nearly the same user interface. To explain the func-
ions, in the following screenshots of the BSA 800 software
are used exemplary.

The BSA and the PC are connected to each by a serial
cable. Data movements are displayed on the bottom line
of the software.
Grouping the conguration parts of the BSA the congu-
ration software is split into in six areas, six different tab
heets. Most of them have different input and output elds.
Start the software with a double-click on the symbol of
BSAx00.exe. At rst the software starts the serial port auto
detect automatically to nd the BSA. Press start to start
he detection.
ou will see the tab sheet Device State. With a correct
connection between PC and BSA (and the BSA is con-
nected to power) the application tries to nd the BSA onhe rst COM ports of the used PC. The BSA is found, all
its values are automatically read out and are shown in the
application input and output elds. Please check the tab
heet General if you have any troubles with the connec-
ion and to choose the COM port manually.
All actual values of the BSA can be displayed with the
conguration software. Some of them are hidden and
protected by a password. If values change, the actual data
can be read out by double-clicking on the read button. To
rite new settings to the BSA double-click on the write
button.
ouble-click on a write button starts immediately the dataransmission to the BSA, without any further request!
ou can close the application by double-clicking on the
tandard close button at the right top corner of the window
