Biomechanics of Human Movement
Balance, Follow Through, Leverage (levers) Torque,
and Weight Transfer
Balance
Definition:• Ability to stay in a point of
nothingness with no outward tension
Examples:• Defensive stance• Medicine ball push ups.
Pictures of Balance
• Erectors, quads, and abs are used for balance
Follow Through
Definition:• The completion of a form of
movement that results in relaxationExamples:• Golf club ends up over the shoulder• Tennis racquet ends up past the
body
Images of Follow Through
• Muscles used (in golf) include quadriceps, hamstrings, abductors, adductors, obliques, gluteus maximus, latissimus dorsi, trapezius, pectorals, deltoids, triceps and biceps. That’s a LOT of muscles!
Leverage (Levers)
Definitions:• The exertion of force by means
of a lever• A device you apply force toExample:• Bicep curl
Pictures of Leverage
• In torque, muscles act as effort forces to move loads.
Torque
Definition:• A twisting force that often
causes rotationExample:• Twisting Oblique Crunch
Pictures of Torque
• Trapezius, deltoids, abdominals, pectorals, and Latissimus Dorsi are used in torque.
Weight Transfer
Definition:• Stepping power• The ability to shift weight from
one point to another. Example:• Throwing
Pictures of Weight Transfer
• Weight transfer works with the quadriceps, latissimus dorsi, and trapezius.
