•Between machines information is exchanged by binary digits (bits).•Each bit is two valued—either 0 or 1.•Two common states are use today that are given below.•ASCII•EBCDIC

• ASCII– Stands for American Standard code for
Information Interchange.– Employ a sequence of seven bits.– Each bit may be 0 or 1.– It contain 27, or 128 unique patterns.

• EBCDIC– Stands for Extended Binary Coded Decimal
interchange Code– Employs a sequence of eight bits.– Each bit may be 0 or 1.– EBCDIC contains 28, or 256 unique patterns.
