Dear Friends,
In Central Indiana, we’re takingthe bike seriously.
Now, thanks to on-going effortsto identify and implement a network of preferred bikingroutes, Marion County and thesurrounding area can offer enthusiasts the option ofcycling to the store, peddling to the park, or evenwheeling to work. It’s not just for fun anymore! Ourexpanding route network connects on-street bikeroutes with our beautiful regional greenways system –long the link between our neighborhoods and nature.
So, hop on your bike to run errands, get to your job,or just for the fun of it. The result will be greaterfamily fitness, improved traffic flow and better airquality for the entire region! There’s never been abetter time to bike around the Greater Indianapolisregion.
Sincerely,
Bart Peterson

A message from the Mayor of Indianapolis
Primary Bike Routesprovide access between neighborhoods on a continuous, cross-county system. Eventually, these will be signed routes with various segments featuring added enhancements, such as separated or marked bike lanes.
Greenways Trailsare part of the Primary Bike Route system and provide off-road bicycle facilities.
Proposed Greenways Trails
Proposed Bike Routes are in the planning stages and will join the Primary Bike Route system when complete. They do not currently feature signage or other enhancements.

Riding TipsBikes are a legitimate form of transportation and
have the same right-of-way on the road as a car or
truck. Motorists need to understand and accept thisfact and learn to drive safely and legally aroundcyclists. At the same time, cyclists need to remember
their responsibilities. When cyclists obey stop signsand all traffic laws, they increase good will and legiti-macy in the eyes of car drivers.
To earn respect from motorists and to ride safely, obey all traffic laws just as you would when driving acar. Think of yourself as a vehicle:
Don’t dart in and out of traffic. Stay in your lane and chart a steady, predictable course with your bike.
Ride defensively.Be especially careful around cars thatmay pull away from the curb or into/outof a driveway.
See and be seen.Do everything you can to make sure sur-rounding motorists see you. Use brightlycolored clothing, reflectors, a bell orhorn, and/or a mirror.
Use hand signals.Let drivers know where you’re going.Signal all turns and stops ahead oftime. Before turning, look over yourshoulder for any traffic.
Never ride against traffic.Motorists are not expecting bicyclists to be riding on the wrong side of the road.
Watch out for parked cars. People inside could unexpectedly opentheir doors right in front of you.
Anticipate upcoming changes. Look down the road to prepare for pot-holes, drain grates and other hazardsthat lie in your path.
Yield to pedestrians. They hold the legal right-of-way overall vehicles, including bikes.
Don’t pass on the right at intersections. Pass on the left (not the right!) to avoidrisking a crash.
Never leave your bike unattended.Think of it as a friend and keep it safe. That’s what bike chains, lock, racks andlockers are for.

Alwayswear a bike
helmet. According to theBike Helmet Safety
Institute, cyclistshave accidents every
4,500 miles. Even a lowspeed fall on a street route orpath can be dangerous. Don’trisk it. Wear a helmet. SinceMarch, 1999, all new bicyclehelmets have had to meet newConsumer Product SafetyCommission (CPSC) uniformmandatory national standard.Look for the CPSC sticker.Other stickers indicating that ahelmet was manufactured to anacceptable standard may readSnell B-95 or B-90 certified orASTM certified by SEI.
