BETASEEDSUGAR BEET VARIETIES 2021
BETASEED. SIMPLY DIFFERENT. www.betaseed.co.uk
BTS 1915
The highest yielding variety available High adjusted tonnes: Treated 108.1% Untreated 110.1%Very high consistency of yield performance High sugar content: 17.7%Excellent rust resistance: 8.7For normal and late sowing Rhizomania tolerant
Breeders Comment: “The variety BTS 1915 has an exceptional 5.1% yield advantage over its nearest competitor and 8.1% over the mean of the treated control on the sugar beet Recommended List. Equally impressive is its superiority in the untreated trials series, namely 8.2% over its nearest competitor and 10.1% over the mean of the control. We normally expect to see year-on-year yield advances of 1 to 2% in yields, so BTS 1915 is something quite special and this is at a time when many other arable crop yields have plateaued. Nor is it a ‘one-year wonder’ performance. These extremely high yields have been consistent over the last three years.”

BTS 1915 - YIELD SIGNIFICANCE
BTS 1915 provides an opportunity for growers who want to take the next step-up in yields. In doing so they are raising the bar in sugar beet production even higher, making themselves more resilient against the costs of producing a sugar beet crop. According to figures from the John Nix Pocketbook for Farm Management 2020 edition, the additional benefits of this 5% yield are significant in terms of profitability, irrespective of the crop being low, average or high yielding. Increasing the yield by 5% on a crop yielding 66.5t/ha by 3.32t/ha brings a financial benefit of £67.89/ha. For a crop yielding 78.0t/ha, a 5% increase in yield of 3.90 t/ha is worth £79.75/ha and on a crop yielding 89.5t/ha an extra 5% benefit in yield of 4.47t/ha is worth £91.41/ha.

BTS 1140
Proven on Farm, one of the leading varieties for both 2019 & 2020 harvest High adjusted tonnes: 101.8%High sugar yield: 101.8%High sugar content: 17.7%For normal and late sowing Rhizomania tolerant
Breeders Comment: “BTS 1140 has been one of the most popular sugar beet varieties grown in the last couple of seasons and is set to continue as one of the leading market share varieties, due to its proven performance on farm. BTS 1140 is extremely reliable and offers high yield potential, comparable to, or better than, many of the varieties on the new BBRO Recommended List 2021.Internal and Recommended List trials data over several years suggests that BTS 1140 should be sown in the normal to later drilling period on farm (see graph page 10).BTS 1140 has high sugar content combined with good foliar disease tolerance for both rust and powdery mildew, with limited data suggesting excellent downy mildew resistance.”
Sowing period
PROVEN ON FARM
March AprilTraditionally, the financial yield potential of a crop has been a key factor for variety choice. But increasingly the delivery of the potential is getting more attention, as the graph above clearly demonstrates. BTS 1915 not only delivers a top yield potential as expressed in adjusted tonnes, it does so with a very high degree of consistency.
BTS 1915 has moderate resistance to powdery and downy mildew. It has the best rust resistance available, making it suitable for the later harvesting dates that are now common practice on many farms. BTS 1915 is a variety for the normal and late sowing period. This is demonstrated by the bolting figures from normal sowing, which have been very low (0) for three seasons. However, the variety is unsuitable for the earlier sowing situation.

Mean of control values include BTS 860 which is no longer listed. 1. Newly listed varieties (PR1/PS1) have results from three years using approximately 2 kgs breeders’ seed. Thereafter commercial seed should be used in RL trials. (See supplementary table).2. Yields based on an average plant population of 103,100 plants/ha in these trials. Differences in adjusted tonnes of less than 2.8% should be treated with reserve.3. The ratings from normal sowings are applicable for sowing after mid-March in most seasons.4. Differences in establishment of less than 3.7% should be treated with reserve. 5. Observations for rust taken from inoculated trials that are not taken to yield. Powdery mildew data taken from main series using 2018 & 2019 trials not taken to yield.6. BTS 4100
The highest sugar content available: 18.3% Consistent high sugar content over differing seasons (2017 – 2019)High adjusted tonnes: 100.1%High sugar yield: 99.6%Excellent ESB and NSB characteristics Rhizomania tolerant
Breeders Comment: “BTS 4100 has very high inherent sugar content, offering growers that have difficulty achieving high sugar content on certain soil types or in challenging field conditions, the opportunity to maximise potential returns. BTS 4100 has excellent early sowing characteristics with low ESB and zero NSB counts, combined with good agronomic characteristics.”

MEAN DRILLING DATE OF THE UK SUGAR BEET CROP 2013 - 19
Date of sowing: Each season brings its own challenges, however the time of drilling of the national sugar beet crop has been remarkably stable, as shown in the graph above produced by BBRO. This is based on the 2013 - 19 grower declarations and shows the average for the end of March plus or minus one week, in 6 out of the last 7 years. Hence when selecting a variety to drill for the majority of the situations the Normal Sown Bolting trial data is relevant for assessing the bolting risk of the resulting crop. Only in those situations where early drilling, which is sowing before mid March, is the Early Sowing Bolting data the more relevant information source to consult.

BTS 3325
Proven consistent performer in trials and on farmHigh adjusted tonnes: 98.4%High sugar yield: 98.3%Very high sugar content: 18.0%Good ESB and NSB characteristics Rhizomania tolerant
Breeders Comment: “Through its performance on farm BTS 3325 has demonstrated its reliability over some very testing growing seasons. The variety has good early sown bolting tolerance, combined with a good disease resistance profile and a high sugar content, making it a robust performer. Most importantly, BTS 3325 has shown a good consistency of performance on farm, making it a preferred variety for growers looking for all round security in a sugar beet variety, especially in the earlier drilling situation.”
