THE PASTOR’S PEACE I am writing July’s Pastor’s Peace having just finished our Question Sunday in which the congregants write questions that I answer instead of giving a sermon. We had some great questions, and I hope exploring those topics was interesting for the writers and the congregation. Before I started answering the questions, I commented that one of the scripture readings for the day, Matthew 10:24-39, was one of my favorites to preach on. Now since we won’t get that scripture again for an-other 3 years, I figured I would take this Pastor’s Peace to give you a mini version of what I would have said. This passage from Matthew is a favorite of mine, be-cause it is a difficult one and thus is challenging to explore. In it Jesus claims that he did not come to bring peace but rather a sword! Now wait a second: Jesus is the Prince of Peace, so why would he say this? Sometimes this passage has been used to jus-tify war and killing in the name of Christ, which I feel is con-trary to the teaching of Jesus. Jesus speaks of setting members of a family against each other, especially along generational lines. What I believe is that Jesus is offering a radical path of love and peace and a relationship with God that is at great odds with the status quo of the time. In other words, if people really follow Christ, it is not going to be easy and it will disrupt and upset many. Jesus, however, was not here for a popularity con-test, and he did bring out the sword, the sword of the Romans through the crucifixion, and the swords of later generations who would oppress and kill his followers. The teachings of Je-sus threatened the ways of those in power so much that they murdered to try to protect their views. Thus Jesus reminds those who follow him, that they too will pick up their own crosses and follow—a somber reminder to many early Chris-tians that they would indeed lose their lives as Christ had, but that they would, in turn, gain life eternal. Thankfully, in our community people are not trying to kill us because we follow Jesus, although there are still places in the world where people are killed or persecuted for following Christianity or a religion different from the majority. Even though we do not face the sword, I will state that the teachings of Jesus are still pretty radical, and sometimes when you follow them, it ruffles many feathers. Continued on Page 5

Church Church Church Church NewsNewsNewsNews and Events and Events and Events and Events (Pastor’s Peace continued) I would also say that the priorities of this world are often different from those of Christ, and we are tempted to be more concerned about things, that in the eyes of God, are of little im-portance. For me, I try to remember that following Christ is a journey and not a destination. Each one of us has periods of great adherence to Christ and days when we are greatly lack-ing in our devotion. Do not be discouraged, however; have faith, continue on your path, and know that you are not alone. Peace and Blessings, Pastor Brian

Pastor Brian on Vacation

Pastor Brian will be on vacation from June 30th through July 14th. He can be reached at (937) 469-1383 in case of emergency. Rev. Stuart Wells and Rev. Gail Wells will be fill-ing in for the Sundays Pastor Brian is on va-cation.

Church Work Day: Sunday July 20th As you know, our last cleanup day was can-celed due to rain. Please join us after church on Sunday July 20th. We will spend some time cleaning up the outside of the church, weeding, and cleaning the shelter etc. Please bring gloves, rakes, sprayers for weeds, or anything else helpful if you have them.

Summer Labyrinths Walks

We will be having labyrinth walks for 4 weeks this summer, giving you an oppor-tunity for spiritual contemplation and centering. Labyrinths have been used for centuries in the Christian church as tools for spiritual reflection and development. They have sym-bolized many things over the years including images for the Holy City, pilgrimage paths, repentance, and journeying to God. Starting on Sunday July 20th for 4 weeks we will have the labyrinth available for walking each Sunday before and after church, and each Wednesday evening from 5-7PM, with the last walk on Wednesday August 13th. The laby-rinth will be located under the picnic shelter and we ask that you take your shoes off when walking it. There are many ways to walk the labyrinth, but most common is to start on the outside and walk slowly to the center along the path and then slowly back out. Many choose to say prayers, focus on God, or empty their minds while doing this.

Dragons Outing – Saturday July 26th We will be having a church outing to see the Dayton Dragons baseball game on Sat-urday the 26th. It is a 7PM game and the tickets are $11 each. We currently have 24 tickets reserved. It will be on a first come first serve basis, so if you are interested in going to the game, please see Alan Nelson, who is organizing the trip.

WELCOME

POP! POP! POP! By Kristine Petrick

Believe it or not, the Outreach committee is already planning for the Beavercreek Popcorn Festival on Sept. 6th and 7th. If you are unfamiliar with this event, it is one of our biggest fundraisers at church. We are in our 17th year participating with a food booth. We serve drinks, chips, hotdogs, roasted corn, and homemade chicken and noodles. To offset expenses we ask for donations of soft drinks and bottled water. We would like 16 oz. bot-tles of water and name brand cans of Coke, Diet Coke, Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Root Beer, Moun-tain Dew and Sprite. Thanks and keep your ears open for more news about the Popcorn Festival.

Conner Puckett Classic – July 18th

Beaver UCC will be a sponsor and have a foursome in the Conner Puckett Classic golf tournament on July 18th. If you want to be on the church team, see Kristine Petrick with your $85 check made out to Beaver UCC. These funds will be combined with the church’s donation and sent in together. If there are more people who want to play, you can sign up directly with the CPC and pay them. All proceeds will go towards helping to pay for equipment and treatments for Conner and children like him who struggle with Cerebral Palsy. The CPC can always use volunteers as well; you can talk to Mark Freeze about how to help. Look for flyers for the event in early July.

Older Sunday School Summer Break As some of you know, we are in the process of redesigning / revamping our Sunday school program. As part of that, we are going to take a break from Sunday school for the older kids group. We will still have nursery and Sunday school for the younger kids with Sarah, but the older kids will be in service for July and August. This will give us some time to explore new ideas, and it will be good for the older kids to get a bit more experience with worship. I have floated this idea past most, if not all, of the parents in this group; however, if anyone has questions please feel free to contact me. Blessings, Pastor Brian

SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR LOCAL CHILDREN

Think about being asked to complete a writing assignment without having a pen or

pencil, or an art project without crayons. Many children in our community face this

situation every day when they go to school!

Beaver UCC is collecting school supplies for

to provide these children the basic supplies they need to succeed in school.

From 20 July until 17 August, we will be collecting donations of school and office

supplies in the marked boxes outside the sanctuary. Please consider helping children in

need as they head back to school this fall! Most requested items include:

• Crayons (24 count) • Folders

• Pens • Scissors

• Pencils • Rulers

• Glue Sticks • Markers

• Filler Paper • Notebooks

• Construction Paper • Facial Tissue

• Office Supplies • Desk Accessories

Crayons to Classrooms is a free store for Dayton-area teachers to supply local

classrooms in need. Teachers that qualify can visit Crayons to Classrooms and “shop”

for supplies for their classrooms and students at no cost.

Not a shopper? Crayons to Classrooms can also use monetary donations to purchase

necessary supplies to fill their shelves. You can give your check to Bob Tobias or place

it in the Sunday offering. Please put “Crayons to Classrooms” on the “notes” line of the

check, or on the offering envelope.

For more information, you can visit the Crayons to Classrooms website at

Sunday School Meeting: Sunday July 27th We will be meeting after church in the sanctuary to discuss some ideas on revamp-ing our Sunday school program. All parents of children in our congregation are invited, as well as anyone else interested or involved in our program. Pastor Brian has already talked to some parents and some ideas from those conversations will be presented. If you cannot attend the meeting but have some input, feel free to email or talk to Pastor Brian in ad-vance.

Truss Fundraising Update and Pledges We have raised around $12,000 of the $39,000 needed for the truss repair in the sanctuary. This is an amazing amount in a very short time and shows great generosity within our church. As we will be starting the construction soon, we will likely need to fund the remainder of the cost from our investments and other resources. One church member suggested to the consistory that we accept pledges for the next 5 years to see if members and others would be willing to give more towards paying for this project in years to come. As the consistory considers various financing options, it would also be helpful to know if specific donations could be expected in future years towards paying off this project. If you would be willing to pledge a future amount, please fill out the form be-low and indicate the total you would be willing to pledge towards the truss project and the number of years you would expect to take to donate this amount. Pledge forms can be given to Bob Tobias, Pastor Brian, or placed in the offering. Any amount is appreciated and together we will continue to be great stewards for this congregation.

Change is a coming! Roof Truss Project- Updates By Kristine Petrick

You will begin to see some changes here at church starting in July. Various con-struction bids were gathered and Becker Construction was selected to complete the truss repair. There will be some dust partitions located around the back sanctuary walls and some scaffolding. Church services will continue and will not be interrupted or relo-cated. The parent/comfort room will be shut down during construction and an alternate location will be made available. Please be aware of these temporary inconveniences dur-ing the construction phase. We anticipate construction should be completed approxi-mately 4 to 6 weeks after start date.
