Battle of Midway- Occurred June 4th-7th, 1942- 6 Months after the Japanese attack

on Pearl Harbor- Fought between the navies of the

United States and the Empire of Japan

- Resulted in a significant victory for the Allied Powers

- Ability of the Japanese Navy to conduct offensive operations severely degraded after the battle

Akagi, the flagship of the Japanese carrier striking force which attacked Pearl Harbor, as well as Darwin, Rabaul, and Colombo, in April 1942 prior to the battle.

Why Did the Battle of Midway Occur?

- The Japanese Navy had the goal of removing the U.S. Navy as a threat to them at Midway.

- Believed another defeat would force the U.S. to negotiate peace.

- Japanese planned to lure the U.S. aircraft carriers into a trap since they missed attacking the carriers at Pearl Harbor.

- U.S. cryptologists were able to assess the location and date of the pending Japanese attack

- Battle resulted in 4 Japanese aircraft carriers, 1 destroyer, and 248 aircraft being sunk or destroyed.
