Notes from Paula’s Pad
Attitude of GratitudeWith the holidays over and all
the gifts and celebrations through,we reflect on the year past and thenew one upon us. This year, I haveadopted the Attitude of Gratitudefor 2016. I recently read an articlestating, “Adopting a gratitudepractice isn’t just something thatsounds nice; it’s a lifestyle andmindset choice that willdrastically change your life.”
Gratitude is something I alwaysfelt I possessed but I don’t feel Ishare it enough with theresidents/families we serve or withthe employees at Belmont Village. So, as we begin our new year of2016, I want to share my gratitudefor the many things I haveexperienced during the past year.
First, I want to say thank you toall the residents and families that
contributed to our EmployeeHoliday Fund. As you know, thisfund is to support all the hourlyteam members who work so veryhard throughout the year. Ourresident council committee worksin partnership with me to assist inthe distribution of the EmployeeHoliday Fund. And with yourgenerous donations to the fund,we gave every employee a liberalgift card. All the funds weredistributed according to length ofservice. And from our staff, anenormous thank you for yourkindhearted gifts!
Secondly, I am grateful for ourwonderful team members thatexecute the care, service andactivities every single day. Withoutsuch a great team of people, wewould not be where we are today. To all the employees of BelmontVillage Hunters Creek, thank you!We are truly blessed to have sucha devoted team of people.
Lastly, a word of gratitude to allof our Belmont Village families.Thank you for entrusting us in thecare of your loved ones. We aretruly honored and privileged tohave your family as a part of ourBelmont Village family.

Jamaal Tucker
Jamaal came to us with a bigheart. He had been a school busand special needs driver and Iknew he had compassion. Asour driver I noticed his attentionto detail and his continuousservice to our residents. Heseems to have instincts aboutour residents’ needs andanticipates what should happen.Jamaal makes things work.
Jamaal’s abilities and intellectshine when he does activities. Not only can he implement theactivity with precision, he makesit fun. He knows our residents’likes and dislikes. Whether it isseated volleyball, Wii bowling,Sudoku or giant crosswords, ourresidents look forward to theirtime with him. When we areplaying games and he enters theroom, things just go to the nextlevel. It’s that likeability factor.
Congratulations, Jamaal, andthank you so much for all youdo for Belmont Village.

PBS artist, Mysterium, featuring local musiciansKemper Crabb and ChrisWhittington, performedtheir Medieval ChristmasMusic for our residentson Monday, Dec 14th
Medieval Christmas MusicThe performance was a magical time of
ancient carols accompanied with periodinstruments. The musicians, many of thempriests, took time to share the unique history oftheir music and the instruments they played. They performed their title track from Kemper’snational PBS special, “DOWNE IN YONFORREST: CHRISTMAS FROM THE MIDDLEAGES.” Their music seeks to help us understandwhere we have come from, and where we are, sowe can know where to go in the future.

Holidays and Other DaysOur first Resident Spotlight was
a great success honoring the life ofWalter Peine. We decorated aposter containing pictures of alleras of Walter’s life as well as amusic playlist of his favoritesongs. The lyrics of the songs wereprinted out for the rest of theresidents to sing along with.Walter shared stories fromdifferent periods of his life andthe entire community was able tolearn so much from him.
Our Enrichment Leaders begantheir monthly outings in keepingwith their theme of studyingNorth American Indians. TheCircle of Friends visited theSouthern Apache Indian Museumfor a tour of their facility andlearned about how ourindigenous predecessors lived andtraveled in the North Americancontinent. A trip to the Islamic Artexhibit at the HMFA expanded ourunderstanding and appreciationof this important culture, and itscontribution to the beautiful art ofcalligraphy and the mastery ofgeometry, as it applied toarchitecture and design. In thespirit of the season, we visitedCornelius Nursery and enjoyedthe sights and smells ofChristmas. We rounded out the
month with a trip to HMNS to seethe Faberge jewelry exhibit. A busybut happy group!
We recently added a projectorscreen to the community formovie nights. Our first movienight featured the holiday classic“Home Alone”-popcorn, peanuts,Christmas cookies and soft drinks!
