There are 50 cloud-to-ground dis-charges per second globally. Oneof the most potentially catastroph-ic consequences of these discharg-
es is the loss of human life. Addi-tionally, these discharges aectover 30% of US businesses caus-ing over $5 billion in damages dueto loss in production time and eco-nomic damages from the lightningor its consequences such as re.
A proper preventive protection,Lightning Warning System, canavoid these catastrophic incidents.Having site-specic information
about the risk of thunderstormsallows the user to take preventivemeasures in advance to protect to-days modern operations.
ATStorm is a state of the art, pat-ented, cost-eective, site-specicsolution that is the most tech-nologically advanced Lightning
Warning system available today.Lightning Warning is a key part ofour Total Site and Facility Protec-tion Systems for sensitive electron-ics, prevention of losses in industri-al processes, assuring basic servicecontinuity, and prevention of seri-ous accidents.
Together VFC Lightning Protectionand Lyncole XIT continue as theNations leaders in Lightning Pro-tection, Grounding and Surge Sup-pression systems. We are proud topartner with Applications Technol-ogies to announce our latest prod-uct, ATStorm.

applicationsOnce the hazard is detected, preventive actions can be taken. They should always be specic for the object (people, structure, open area...) to beprotected. Switch o the main electrical service. Switch on UPS or back up generators, End/Postpone high risk activities. Run devices or operations insafety mode. Evacuation of individuals.
OPEN AREASWorkplaces, sports or open air activities, competi-tions, multitudinous events, farming, ranching or
shing activities.INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES
Prevention of loss in industrial processes and op-erations.
TECHNOLOGYComputers, electric or electronic controls, emer-gency, alarm or security systems.

CONTINUITY OF SERVICEOperations where basic service continuity hasto be assured: telecommunications, power sup-ply, energy transport and distribution, health and
emergency services.INFRASTRUCTUREHarbors, airports, trains, roads, highways, cablerailway.
HAZARDOUS PRODUCTSPrevention of serious accidents involving hazard-ous products and processes (ammable, radioac-tive, toxic, explosive).

EVOLUTION & LIFE CYCLE OF A
However, when the storm clouds are developed, there is a change in po-larization: positive charges on the top part of the cloud, a zone of neg-ative charges in the middle (temperatures of-10 to -20C) and a smallpositive charge near the freezing point.
As the lower part of the cloud gets charged negatively, a positivecharge is induced on earth and on the elements on it, transformingthe atmosphere into an electric eld that can reach tens of kilovolts
THUNDERSTORMp a g e 6
In normal weather conditions
there is a balance between pos-
itive and negative charges in theatmosphere, where the earth is
more negatively charges than
the atmosphere and the ele-
ments situated on the ground.

KeyElements
The touchscreen allows a friendly and easyprogramming of all the system parameters:
Alarm levels Alarm signal (existence and duration of
the sound alarm) Tolerances for the starting and ending of
the alarm.
The Key Elementsof any storm detector are the SENSORand the INTERFACE.
The measuring system is based on the FCES technology (eld-controlledelectrometric sensor), developed by Aplicaciones Tecnolgicas, S.A. toenhance the storm detection. This technology is totally electronic andhas no mobile or mechanical parts. It allows detecting even storms whichare formed over the area where the detector is placed.
The state of the art, touch screen interface allows for intuitive system set
up and programming. All conguration options are available from thetouchscreen. No clumsy switches or dials.
The TOUCHSCREEN Interface
The SENSORIs able to detect the formation of a storm over the areawhere the detector is placed (within a radius of 20 ki-lometers). It has been designed to protect the measure-ment system from the inclemency of the weather, thusenhancing its functioning and its working life.Based on the FCES technology (eld-controlled electro-metric sensor), developed by Aplicaciones Tecnolgi-cas, S.A. to enhance the storm detection. COST EFFECTIVEWhen we envisioned our new Lightning Warning System, we landed on a remarkable innovativedesign, we also however, were able to uphold the integrity of the design while remaining costeective to all of our clients. Creating a Lightning Warning System, which is the nal pieceof our Total Site and Facility Protection Systems, meant upholding VFCs and Lyncole XITsinnovative engineering capabilities and heightening industry standards.
VFC Lightning Protection and Lyncole XIT understand the challenge of having to make thedecision to halt activities such as: Sporting Events Workplaces where operations for basic service continually have to be assured
(telecommunications...) Infrastructures such as harbors, airports, trains, and highways. Making this decision to halt or even postpone these activities due to lightning and when
to resume can be frustrating due to the unpredictability of nature. Lightning in particularis most random in its behavior and cannot be ignored.
Our ATSTORMv2 Lightning Warning System alleviates these challenges and virtually pays foritself after one use. Industry leaders across the nation have been provided with peace of mindby protecting their employees and customers, infrastructures, and equipment by installingATSTORMv2 Lightning Warning System as part of their Total Site and Facility ProtectionPlan.
