MISSION CALL
Dear Sisters in Mission, I pray that this message finds you ALL well but we know in real life that is not always so. To those who are ill, may God touch you with His healing hands and to those who are grieving, may the Lord wrap His loving arms around you and may you feel His strength and comfort. As the summer draws to a close I look back over the last couple of months and say, “Yes, it was a good summer.” In June we held our last two “Cluster Gatherings” and, I must say, all six “Gatherings” were well received by those who attended. I would like to have met more of you but we all lead busy lives and I hope you are able to attend a regional Gathering in 2020. July brought a trip to Florida Southern College for Mission u. We had a wonderful gathering of United Methodist Women and many of our brothers also attended. I took the class Women United for Change: 150 Years in Mission and learned not only about our predecessor organizations but also facts about the early days of the Methodist Church that I was not aware of. Do you know the meaning of MEC, MECS or MPC? I didn’t, but I do now! I hope those of you who attended Mission u found your class just as interesting as I did. Upon returning from Mission u I took a
month-long vacation to Pennsylvania to be with family and friends and have just recently returned to begin the Fall activities with our Atlantic Central District United Methodist Women. Did you attend the Conference Spiritual Retreat, September 6-8, at the Life Enrichment Center. Our own Kim Wendt was the song leader! On September 21 the North Mission Study will be held in Titusville (Indian River City UMC). Registration will begin at 9:30 am. Please be sure to invite other members of you church. October 12 is our DISTRICT ANNUAL MEETING at First UMC, Fort Pierce (616 Orange Ave). At this meeting we will be electing and installing officers for the 2020-2021 term. Your presence is always very important at this meeting as it is at ALL of our district events. You will find the slate of nominees in this issue (page 12). We will also be approving our 2020 budget which you will also find in this issue (page 8). On November 9 we will be attending the Conference Annual Meeting at First UMC, Lakeland. As we continue to celebrate our 150th Anniversary, many of our past Conference presidents will be sharing their memories with us including Dollie Crist, Nancy Weinberg and Annie
Woods from the Atlantic Central District. I hope that many of you will be able to travel to Lakeland for this special event. Looking ahead to 2020, the Southeastern Jurisdiction Quadrennial Assembly will be held in Mobile, Alabama on April 17-19. All information concerning the Assembly can be found at www.umwsej.org and registration is now open. Another girls’ road trip - sounds like fun!!!!! As I wrap up my last year as president of the Atlantic Central District, I look forward to seeing y’all at the above events. Asking God’s blessing on you and yours, Ethel "I trust in God's unfailing love for ever and ever." Psalm 52:8 (NIV) [email protected] 561-694-2197 (H) 561-308-3616 (C)

LEGACY FUND
I have been given the honor of writing about why I give to the Legacy
Fund of United Methodist Women and why I have included the fund in my
planned giving.
The Legacy Fund was created to insure that ministry for women, youth and children
would continue. When eight women founded our organization in 1869, they saved
pennies to begin building schools and missions. I look back to those beginnings, and
what those women sacrificed so that United Methodist Women could be in mission
around the world. With the same boldness, fortitude and faith of those founding
women, we can give to the Legacy Fund to make certain our mission of caring for the
least of our brothers and sisters will go on for another 150 years. I want to insure
that we will serve the women of the future and that we continue to empower women,
children and youth.
That speaks to the general reasoning behind giving. But everybody has a personal
story, and mine is closely connected to the story of United Methodist Women. My
Granny introduced me to serving others when I went with her to circle meetings. My
parents taught me through their actions to be concerned for the least of our brothers
and sisters. When I was in high school, my mother provided a house and helped
mentor a family from China that came to my hometown seeking a better life. I chose
to become an educator because of my love for children.
Now it is my duty to care for others. I chose to be active in United Methodist Women
and have been in leadership positions for 40 years. I choose to support United
Methodist Women and the Legacy Fund through planned giving because I have been
blessed by God’s abundance. It is my duty to be faithful and abundant to others. I
want to be an example for present and future leaders of United Methodist Women.
Please join me in giving to the Legacy Fund.

The Methodist way of being a Christian is not the only way. It is not the easiest way.
It is the way for me. And it holds together some different realities.
We were created for relationships, and we flourish when we are in connection with
each other.
We were created by and for God, and we desire communion with God.
All of this is at the heart of the great commandment of Jesus, that we love God and
our neighbor. And this is how John Wesley spoke of holiness and happiness.
It is significant that for Wesley, Holy Communion was a "converting ordinance". Not
every branch of the church, not every way of being Christian would see it in this
way.
And so we are in connection with sinners, imperfect people. We do not always love
each other well. And our communion is with a God whom we do not always love
completely. The relationship is a gesture of grace to us. It is unmerited favor.
And so we say the ancient prayer, "cleanse the thoughts of our hearts, by the inspi-
ration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you".
We receive communion with the hope that our imperfect loves will mature.
It is easy to be in communion with a God who sees all things in the way we see
them. And it is easy to be in connection with people who love us, and give us no
reason not to love them.
Methodism is not easy for this very reason--it keeps us in communion with a God
whose ways are not our ways, and it keeps us in connection with people who chal-
lenge our happiness and holiness.
Yet this is precisely the way of the cross. This is the purifying work of the Holy Spirit.
This is the Methodist way of sanctification.
