ATEX 137 does not change
‘ATEX 137’ becomes ‘ATEX 153’ (99/92/EC):
• Minimum requirements for improving thesafety and health protection of workerspotentially at risk from explosive atmospheres
• Manage / control explosion risks• Hazardous area classification• Explosion Protection Document (EPD)

ATEX 153: Explosion Risk
Explosion Risk (Rexpl):Rexpl = Pexpl x Eexpl
Rexpl = PATEX x Pignition x EexplPexpl = probability of explosion
PATEX = prob. of explosive atmospherePignition = prob. of ignition source
Eexpl = effect/consequences of explosion
EXPLOSION SAFETY CONSULTANTS
ADINEX
ATEX 153 : Controlling Explosion Risks
Risk control = making Rexpl small:1. PATEX as small as possible
Primary preventionHazardous Area Classification
2. Pignition as small as possibleSecondary prevention
ATEX 114 equipment3. Eexpl as small as possible

ATEX 153 : Hazardous Areas (Gas / Dust)
0 / 20 (gas / dust) PATEX very highContinuous, for long periods or frequent explosive atmosphere
1 / 21 (gas / stof) PATEX highExplosive atmosphere likely to occur duringnormal operation occasionally
2 / 22 (gas / stof) PATEX lowExplosive atmosphere not likely to occur andfor short periods

ATEX 153 : Secondary Prevention
Pexpl = PATEX x Pignition as small as possible:
‐When PATEX very high Pignition extremely lowEX‐equipment with very high level of protection
cat. 1 G / 1 D of Ga / Da‐When PATEX high Pignition very low
EX‐equipment with high level of protectioncat. 2 G / 2 D of Gb / Db (or better)
‐When PATEX low Pignition lowEX‐equipment with normal level of protection
cat. 3 G / 3 D of Gc / Dc (or better)

ATEX 114 : Obligations authorisedrepresentative (2)
– Does not replace the manufacturer ! e.g. conformity assessment procedure, drawing up technical documentation, etc. remainsresponsibility of manufacturer
– Keep EU‐conformity declaration and technicaldocumentation – for 10 year after placing on themarket of a product
