Tournament of Minds
Congratulations to the team that represented the school at the Tournament of Minds on Saturday, 25 August. The team performed exceptionally well particularly with their prepared response. The collaboration and inclusive manner in which they worked towards their presentation held them in good stead and enhanced the final presentation. The TOM team performed their presentation at assembly on Monday where it was warmly received by all in attendance. I would like to acknowledge the support provided to the team by Cassie (Rm1). While the team were preparing for their presentation Cassie supervised all of their out of school sessions including Sunday practises and at the session at LaTrobe University. I would also like to thank parents of these students for supporting their students and the school in our endeavour to provide broader experiences for students.

On Thursday 6 September Ascot Vale West Primary School celebrated a Well-Being Day.
All money raised will go towards our school ‘Buddy Bench’ initiative driven by the Unit 2 students. Students dressed
'as the best version of themselves' (anything that they felt best represented them as a person!)
As a community we raised $480.00 towards our school buddy bench. Well done! The students participated in
a well-being session in their classrooms working towards building their Social and Emotional Learning. They focused
on getting along, building relationships and regulating their emotions using a range of strategies.

Ascot Vale West Primary School is proud to announce that we have been chosen to be
part of a food waste recycling trial developed by the Moonee Ponds City Council. As
part of this, each classroom will be collecting their food waste and emptying it into
special bins with green lids on a daily basis. The council will be collecting the food
waste on a fortnightly basis and intend to use it to create useful products such as
compost and mulch. We are excited about reducing the food waste being produced in
our school and would appreciate your support.

AVW… We have a spine-shivering story to tell you!
No, not really that was just the beginning of our
ToM challenge experience.
ToM was a fantastic experience! It is an
international challenge and problem solving
competition for primary and secondary aged
students.
To write and practise, we got together every week
after school… And on Sundays too!
We learnt that it is not easy to write a script!
Our challenges were to remember our lines and making sure that we addressed all the
competition criteria.
We enjoyed working in the group of new people that we never usually work with and making
the props and costumes!
It was also really exciting to go to the competition in Bundoora and to perform in front of
the judges.
It was a great experience,

Music Camp, Music Camp
Where art thou, Music Camp?
This line opened up our wonderful music concert at music
camp. From violins to percussion, from bass to trumpets. We
all had a lovely time. Music camp was a great experience it
was a time where we got to meet new people, make new
friends and enjoy the nature surrounding us. We learnt so
much music but also had a lot of free time. And the food there
was really good! And I think we can speak for the 15 AVW
students who attended music camp and say it was really fun
and we all became better musicians. We all had a great time
and look forward to the end of year concert. It will be
wonderful to see our new friends again! And if you would like
to know more about music camp just ask anyone who’s been,
it is really an amazing experience.

AVW Music Captains
Thank you to all the fathers, uncles, grandparents and friends
who attended the Father’s Day event on Friday 31st August.
The sprinkling of rain certainly didn’t deter everyone from
having a wonderful time!
The event was coordinated beautifully by Mardi Agnew (Etienne, Room 6), Edwina Wren
(Elsie, Room 13 and Jonah, Room 19) and Jessica
Oliver (Maggie, Room 13 and Seth, Room 19). Thank
you to these Parents’ and Friends’ members for their
hard work and time devoted to organising such a fun
afternoon. I would also like to thank all of the
volunteers who assisted on the day and to all of the
bakers for their delicious treats. Also a special thank
you to the students from unit 4 who not only assisted in
the set-up and pack-down, but also ran the activities.
They did a fantastic job. AVW Parents’ and Friends’
Association are now looking forward to our next event,
which is the Bunnings BBQ on Saturday October 27. If
anyone is interested in helping to coordinate this event
(you don’t need to be a current member of Parents’
