READING COMPREHENSION
Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:- There are many similarities between human beings and animals. They eat, drink and move
like us. But animals cannot talk like us. In the 1960s, scientists in America tried to teach
chimpanzees to talk. But soon they realized that animals did not have the right kind of vocal
organs for learning speaking skills. In 1966 scientists started teaching American Sign
Language (ASL) to a one-year old chimpanzee named Washoe. American Sign Language is
used by speech-disabled and hearing-disabled persons. This language uses signs instead of
sounds. After four years of training, Washoe had learnt one hundred and thirty-two words.
Most of these words were nouns and verbs. He could communicate ideas clearly. In 1972,
Dr. Francine Patterson started working with a baby gorilla named Koko. He taught the sign
language to Koko using children’s picture books. Koko eventually learned sixteen hundred
words. Alex, an African grey parrot who lives in Boston, can easily imitate eighty different
words but she is unable to understand the words. So she is unable to communicate
effectively. In order to communicate effectively, it is essential for an individual to
comprehend the meaning of words. Language skills cannot be acquired through sheer
repetition or habitual usage. Therefore, in order to develop communication skills, one needs
to acquire the ability to comprehend the language.

were very happy following their mother and quack-quacking along the way. All of a sudden
mother duck saw a fox approaching the lake. She was frightened and shouted, “Children,
hurry up! There’s a fox! We must reach the lake quickly.”
The ducklings hurried towards the lake. Mother duck thought of an idea. She began to walk
back and forth dragging one wing on the ground in order to pretend that she was wounded.
When the fox saw her he became happy. He said to himself, “The duck is not able to walk
properly. It seems that she’s hurt and can’t fly! I can catch and eat her easily!” Then he ran
towards her. Mother duck started walking in the other direction, leading the fox away from
the lake. The fox followed her. She thought, “Now the cruel fox wouldn’t be able to harm
my ducklings.” Mother duck looked at her young ones. She was relieved on seeing that they

Chapter 9: Area and Volume
Value Points
The length of a boundary of a shape is called its perimeter. Perimeter of a
closed figure is sum of lengths of all its side.
Perimeter of a square = 4 x length of a side of the square
Side = Perimeter ÷ 4
Perimeter of a rectangle = 2 (length + breadth)
Perimeter of a triangle = Sum of measure of lengths of its three sides
The area of a figure measures the size of the region enclosed by the figure.
This is usually expressed in terms of square unit.
Area of a square = side x side
Area of a Rectangle = length x breadth
The amount of space taken by solid is known as its volume
Volume of cube = side x side x side
Volume of cuboid = length x breadth x height.
Units of perimeter are of same as of length i.e. m, cm ,mm etc.
A unit of area is sq.units.
Units of volume are cubic units.
Q1.Tick the unit you will use to find the area of the following:
a) A cricket field ( sq.cm, sq.m, sq.km)
b) A blackboard ( sq.cm, sq.m, sq.km)
c) The floor of your room ( sq.cm, sq.m, sq.km)
d) Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal ( sq.cm, sq.m, sq.km)
e) School playground ( sq.cm, sq.m, sq.km)
