A Gilbert & Sullivan Christmas Carol
The Ardensingers will be presenting A G&S Christmas Carol on the
second and third weekends of December. This humorous adaptation of A
Christmas Carol is set to the music of Arthur Sullivan, but remains
faithful to the spirit of the Charles Dickens original. The major roles
were cast during auditions in mid-May, but we'd very much welcome
new Chorus members, or production committee assistance. Please visit
our website,www.ardensingers.org, e-mail us
at [email protected], or call John Trexler at (484) 319-2350 for
more information, or to express interest in participating. The play
benefits from a large cast, over a wide range of ages.
Other Upcoming Activities

events:

Rodeo and fireworks after the game.
The Ardensingers host the Beer and Wine Booth each year at the Arden Fair on Saturday, September 3,
2016. It's an important source of revenue to keep lights and heat on in the Gild Hall; 12+ helpers are
needed for the busy afternoon shifts. Please join us for the fun.

exciting evening under the stars in the Field theater.

Room of the Gild Hall. Come join us in July as we wrap up the summer’s activities and

LIBRARY GILD
Our book storage is very full thanks to all your help, so PLEASE hold any further donations for the Fair until
mid-August. At that point they can be dropped off on the stage of the Upper Gild Hall.
Our hours are Sunday from 2:30 to 4 PM, Wednesday from 7:30 to 9 PM, and Thursday from 3:30 to 5 PM.
Our Saturday evening hours will resume next fall in conjunction with the Dinner Gild dinners. Volunteers are
always welcome, stop in and chat with a librarian about becoming one of our valued and able crew.
We have a number of new books, two are featured here:
“Stink Moody, family brain, brings home a report card that isn't perfect? Yikes! Time for him
to get into fighting shape and beat back that U for Unsatisfactory in gym! A scan of the sports
channel leads to a knock-out find: world-class thumb wrestling, with tricky moves like Snake
in the Grass and Santa's Little Helper (no equipment needed, save for a tiny terrifying mask to
sit on your thumb). But when Mom and Dad are not wowed, Stink gets another idea: he'll kick
and punch his way to a yellow belt with the help of a Dragon Master, a seeing-eye Moose, and
a mind as still as a pond. Can you say Crouching Tiger, Hidden Thumb? Hee-ya! Ha! Ha!
Ha!” – from the publisher.
Publishers Weekly Annex (April 11, 2016)
Once again murder and small-town life go hand in glove in Albert's enchanting 24th China
Bayles mystery (after 2015's Bittersweet). Hospice nurse Kelly Kaufman, who has been
renting China's guest cottage in Pecan Springs, Texas, while going through a bitter divorce,
disappears one day, but she later phones China to say that she needs the herbalist's help with
a situation involving murder. While driving to meet China, Kelly has a car accident that
leaves her in a coma. Police chief Sheila Dawson suspects it was no accident, and China
begins to dig for more information. One obvious suspect is Kelly's husband, Richard, who's
involved romantically with the erratic and ebullient sister of China's best friend and business
partner, Ruby Wilcox. In addition, rumors about a disagreement between Kelly and hospice
owner Marla Blake raise a red flag. China can't resist a mystery, even when it puts her in
grave danger. Snippets of plant lore will please botanists.

Joe Louis Walker (with Bob Malone)
Saturday, October 15, 2016, 8 PM.
Cost: $20 for Arden Club members; $25 for non-members.
The New York Times raves: “Walker is a singer with a Cadillac of a voice. He
delivers no-nonsense, gutsy blues. His guitar solos are fast, wiry, and incisive,
moaning with bluesy despair.” Rolling Stone simply calls him “ferocious.”
La Yegros (Cumbia from Buenos Aires)
Saturday, November 12, 2016, 8 PM.
Cost: $20 for Arden Club members; $25 for non-members.
Cumbia returns to Arden, immensely danceable, woman-led, and more modern than
the Peruvians last year.
La Yegros resides in the pulsing heart of cosmopolitan Buenos Aires, but her family
hails from the tropical climates found in the rural rain forests of the north, bordering
Brazil. She received classical, conservatory training in music and got her break when
she played before thousands as part of the De La Guarda experimental theatre. Her
debut album Viene De Mi features a wide spectrum of genres: tropical rhythms,
Argentine folk, reggae, dancehall, soul, and arabic music.

BRIDGE GILD
Donny McCaslin Group
Saturday, January 14, 2017, 8:00 PM.
Cost: $20 for Arden Club members; $25 for non-members.
Featuring Tim Lefebvre, Mark Guiliana, and Jason Lindner.
Donny and his band are featured on the new David Bowie recording
Blackstar, released in January, 2016, which has garnered significant
world-wide acclaim since its release. Donny was also the featured soloist
on the David Bowie single Sue in 2014. He won the Downbeat critics poll
for rising star in 2008 & 2009 and received a Chamber Music of America
new works grant in 2006. He also received the French Jazz Man award in
2007 for the recording In Pursuit and has toured with Maria Schneider,
Dave Douglas, Danilo Perez, Brian Blade, Gil Evans project, Steps
Ahead, and many others. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife and two
young children.
The Bad Plus
Friday, March 31, 2017, 8:00 PM.
Cost: $25 Arden Club members; $30 non-members.
The Bad Plus return to The Gild 5 years after their sold-out show
here.
The Bad Plus have cemented their place as an original music
ensemble. Except for their interpretation of Stravinsky's Rite of
Spring, their last four albums focused almost exclusively on
original compositions. It’s Hard, however, will mark The Bad
Plus return to an aspect of their roots, the very thing that first
made The Bad Plus famous: the deconstruction of songs from the
Pop/Rock and R&B worlds.
Among the tightest, hardest-working bands in the world not a line-up change or substitution in 17 years, this is
a band in their prime, returning to early form, which is an event not to be missed!
CONCERT GILD CONTINUED
We play in the Bratten Room of the Lower Gild Hall the first and third Thursdays of the month from 6:30 PM
to 8:30 PM. This month’s dates are July 7 and July 21. The cost is $1 for members and $2 for non-members.

POETRY GILD
SCHOLARS GILD
The Scholars Gild will be on sabbatical for July and August.
This Fall, we are scheduling four discussions covering very interesting topics. Our
discussions are held starting at 7:30 PM on the third Tuesday of the month in the
lower Gild Hall.
If you would like to receive e-mail notifications and reminders of future discussions,
contact the Scholars Gild via [email protected]. Title your e-mail
“Scholars Gild Request” and include your name, comments, and request in the body
of the e-mail.
We look forward to seeing you at our Fall season, starting in September. Mark your
calendar for September 20.
The Poetry Gild meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 PM in the Library at
Gild Hall. Bring your own spoken word poem or any writing of your choosing to share.
Drummer’s Circle
The Arden Drummer’s Circle, sponsored by the Concert Gild, meets every
third Sunday of each month at 1 PM (generally running about 2 hours or so).
Beginners and professionals alike are invited to join with us. We often play
some common rhythms and then we improvise. Bring a drum or two, and/or
percussion instruments. In fair weather, we meet outdoors of the Gild Hall,
but in cold or rainy weather we move into the Lower Gild Hall. We also
sometimes have one or two evening events during the year that often take the
place of the monthly event.
To join the e-mail list, send an e-mail to [email protected].
People on this list will be notified by e-mail if times or dates change, or if
another performance in the Upper Gild Hall prevents us from playing. Also
see our Facebook site, Arden Drum Circle, for more information.
