ABOUT SHIELD FOUNDATION
MISSION AND VISION
Shield Foundation represents "Society for Health, Innovation,
Education, and Liaisons Development." Centered in Dharavi (Asia's
largest slum) in Mumbai, India, the Shield Foundation is focused on
developing and delivering educational, medical, recreational, vocational
and nutritional services to disadvantaged populations. Key programs
include SHIELD's vocational training program for unemployed women
to learn respite care giving for home-bound senior citizens who
otherwise do not have access to adequate homecare; skills training for
tailoring and beautician work for young women in the community; case
work for academic, vocational, pre-marital and domestic violence cases;
English-speaking and computer courses; and health check-up events.
Shield Foundation was created in 2009 by Swati Ingole. During her
10 years of experience as a qualified social worker (MSW), she
encountered high rates of neglected and abused elderly living without
moral or financial support, and decided to create the Foundation to help
these and other underserved individuals. Since its origin, Shield has
now grown to include a small but powerful team of five full time staff
members (three paraprofessional and one office assistant in addition to
the founder), with additional support from 25 nursing student
volunteers and social work students from various local universities. In
2011, Shield Foundation was honored to become an investee of UnLtd
India, a social enterprise incubator.

MISSION ‘To facilitate good mental and physical
health and to foster equal growth
opportunities for everyone in the
society’
‘To make the senior citizens of Mumbai
and Nagpur self-sufficient and
sensitize society as a whole on issues
faced by them’
VISION
FROM FOUNDER’S DESK
Dear Friends,
Since 2009, we have initiated working on the issues of older and elderly
and providing skill development courses for underprivileged people. Like
every year, our efforts were to provide more meaningful and qualitative
services for the senior citizens of Dharavi. Since our inception, all our
services are free for senior citizens and we do not take any membership
fees from any of our stakeholders.
With our team’s hard work we were able to reach out to more number of
elderly. We have dealt with 39 counselling cases of elderly this year. While
solving the legal cases, majority cases were about single elderly abuse
whether male or female. They are easy targets and they do not disclose
their sufferings given by their own children, easily to anyone. Even if we
stood beside them, they were scared that their sufferings might multiply.
So we tried our new soft approach and solved cases within the families.
Along with District Sub Urban Legal Aid Cell, the lawyer-volunteers
provided support to us for this service.
Like every year, various events and activities were planned for the
recreation of elders, care givers and other beneficiaries. The senior citizens
ID card and Pan Card service, is also offered through our centre with the
support of FESCOM (Federation for Senior Citizens of Maharashtra).
Our ‘Eye Care’ Services for senior citizens are running smoothly and has
benefitted 533 patients this year. Our morning yoga and exercise service
is functional in collaboration with Occupational therapy department. Due
to this ongoing service, community women have understood the
importance of yoga and exercise to deal with their problems related to
bones, muscles and pains. This year it has benefitted 122 elderly people.
Supportive therapies are also useful for chronic health problems like
arthritis, paralysis, knee problems, diabetes, hypertension, asthma etc. So
organized orientation workshops on Acupressure.
02
For recreation and awareness various cultural and informative
programmes were organized throughout the year with an objective to
bring positive change in lives of senior citizens. Intergeneration
sensitization was done through the get-together programmes.
In the skill development project for ladies we have provided training for
enhancing certain skills. The major focus was on ‘Respite Care Givers
Training programme’. The trainer team including Dr. Daksha Pandit, Dr.
Nilesh Shah, and Dr. Shailaja Jaiwant and I have taken special efforts to
design the training module for this skill development programme. This
training program is designed for 3 months. After theory classes, the
trainees were placed in the local hospitals for practical learning. We have
successfully trained 40 women under this training program.
Such courses help the needy to find jobs as per their requirement. 5
trainees were absorbed by the renowned organization SNEHA for their
health project on Malnutrition. All the employed trainees are earning
salary in the range of ₹ 8000- ₹ 13000. Our organization has helped them
in getting the ‘police Verification Certificate’ too. We are happy that in this
journey we are obtaining support from our old supporters along with our
new supporters and almost 50 volunteers including the student volunteers
from LTMG Nursing School.
We have also dealt some cases of women who were almost hopeless about
their lives when they first approached our organization for skill
development courses. They have now completely transformed into new
personalities; confident, self-sufficient, and full of hope and enthusiasm.
They are working and are self-sufficient. We have provided skill
development training for 220 women. The local kids insisted our
organization for organizing a skill training program for them too. So, we
arranged a computer education course for them and 5 Computers were
mobilized at our centre.
Finally, I would like to personally thank every member and volunteer of
SHIELD who have worked selflessly and tirelessly to positively impact so
many lives. I would also like to thank our Trustees, Supporters and Partners
for their continuing guidance and encouragement.

and on 1st October 2014 for
men. Usually there are 20-25
participants for such events.

organized on 30th September
2014 for male elders. 12 elders
participated in this event.

patients received cataract
treatment and 6 received
spectacles.
A General Health Check-up
camp was organized on 11th
May 2014 (with 70
beneficiaries). Since health is
one of the main concerns for
senior citizens, our
organization is making an
effort to provide the health
services, nearby their houses.
The consultation was being
offered on BP, Sugar, Exercise,
and other multiple ailments.
Dr. Sachin Jain and rest of his
team of doctors was from Sai
group of hospitals, Dharavi.
An all over health check-up
camp was again organized on
14th September 2014 (with 97
beneficiaries). Free medicines
were also distributed.
14
Many elderly seeking medical
help were taken to Sion
Hospital for treatment of their

who are reluctant to go to Sion
Hospital and had better
financial support were referred
to local private hospital, where
our NGO has made efforts to
get services for senior citizens

with senior citizens was
conducted for understanding.
Day by day the greying
population is increasing and
with increasing longevity,
sometimes elderly become
bedridden.
16
Middle class and rich class
senior citizens can afford the
cost of caregiver and hire
someone properly trained.
After understanding this need,
we convinced the needy ladies
to join the ‘caregiver training’
course. A ‘Nursing Care
Assistant’s course orientation
was given to 25 women on 9th
December 2014.
Ladies in need of money were
identified. They were screened
for trainings after checking
their willingness for care givers
job. 20 girls were identified for
training. On 14th January 2015,
Inauguration of Nursing
Course was done.
This course was initiated with
the support of Corporate. The
course objective is to empower
girls with skills to take care of
the senior citizens/patients.
The training module was
developed by the team of
doctors, sisters, psychiatrist,
and Social Worker occupational
therapy experts.
This was a double impact
project. After training they get
the job with decent salary. With
which they can sustain their
family and serve as good
caregivers.
Recreation is required for every
individual. Elderly have plenty
of time but nobody is there to
take them for outings. So every
year we take them for outings;
once or twice as per the
available resources.

pilgrimage to Mahad, Pali,
Khopoli was organized. These
places are famous for
Ashtavinayak temples and
natural beauty.

dependent had come with their
care givers. 70 senior citizens
along with 15 caregivers came
for this outing.
All senior citizens from diverse
religion groups, be it Hindu,
Muslim, or Christian, enjoyed
the picnic. The trip’s travelling,
food, and sight-seeing costs
were supported by Reliance
Capital.

programmes and activities
were organized for women. As
per ladies’ suggestions,
programmes were planned. The
main objective of this event was
to appreciate all the ladies for
their contribution in making
their home. Even the cases
with disputes between Mother
& Son, Mother & Daughter-in-
law, Mother & Daughter were
invited. Such programmes
proved to be a benefit to resolve
conflicts between the young
and old generation.

OUR IMPACT
This set of case studies showcases how our team tackled and solved the
problems faced by the members of our society who came to us asking for
help.
Sheela Nikalje, a single widow elderly was staying with her son and his
family in the house bought by her. She bought it from her daily wages
savings. There were constant disputes in the family. One day they after
big quarrel in the family, her son died on spot due to massive heart
attack. After this incidence his wife has got all his money from the office.
The daughter-in-law and her children started torturing Sheela to vacate
the house. Police also ignored their issues. The daughter in law involved
few people BMC office and hid Sheela’s house document file in which she
applied for her nomination. The old lady went to renowned NGOs, but
her sufferings continued. She came to us with almost no hopes and was
in great distress. We invited her daughter-in-law and discussed her
problem. We have done legal counselling for her. We have visited the
concerned offices, police station and sensitized every one, who could play
vital part in the process. A legal notice has been sent to BMC office for
the inquiry of her papers. We made the daughter-in-law to understand
the consequences. Thus we have rehabilitated the lady in her house.
The further course of action is going on.
Indubai Khare’s daughter-in-law was fighting with Indubai’s son and
with her every day. Indubai was a nurse and her son was unemployed.
She registered the complaint in police station against them. Indubai and
her grandchildren were scared and came to organization. We invited
them for counselling. We understood the issues of her daughter-in-law
and suggested her son to look for a job and take responsibilities.
21
CASE STUDY 1
CASE STUDY 2
We have also done counselling for the entire family and discussed how
the problems can be resolved by giving some space to each other. They
all agreed for that. Her son has now started doing a job and takes care
of his parents and children.
Tanu was extremely under pressure and was scared of her husband. So
she secretly approached us and was constantly requesting us to find a
job for her. We made her comfortable so she could share her problem.
She told us that she has 4 children and her husband remarried. He gave
her Rs.150 daily for her families’ expenditure, which was obviously quite
insufficient for them. Her husband also didn’t allowing her to do any job.
We invited her husband for counselling. We discussed with him all her
concerns. We made him understand that he should not ignore his wife
and is responsible for his family’s requirements. We suggested him that
he should give her an assurance. She should get property in her name.
The counselling was effective and he agreed to give her Rs 500/- for few
days as his business is not doing well. He agreed to transfer their hut in
her and their childrens’ name. He accepted his responsibility for their
children’s education and marriage. Now Tanu is staying with her
children in her own hut which is transferred in her name by her
husband. Her husband is taking care of their childrens’ education.
Trushna was in distress as her husband was ignorant about her. She
has no children in their 7 years of married life. He was constantly
scolding her for all his problems. She spent 7 years saying no single
word. She approached us for legal support. She was not willing to go
back. She said in 7 years married life, her husband has given her
constant hate and ignorance. She had no motive to go back, but her
husband’s family was pressurizing her to give signature on divorce
papers. We invited her husband for legal counselling. He revealed that
he was not willing to give her divorce. He also added that he is a driver
with no specific income. Trushna was not ready to go back. We advised
them for divorce with mutual consent. He finally agreed to give her one
lump sum amount. Trushna later on enrolled for ‘Respite Care Givers
Course’ offered by us. We have not taken any fees from her. During the
course we employed her as a teacher for tailoring course. After
completion of the course, she is happily earning Rs. 8000/- salary.
