Hosting ... but not as we know it.
● Hosting on Demand – No humans involved. – Automated
– Fast
● But... – No DNS – You can assign a domain name to an
Amazon EC2 server but it's not officially supported by Amazon.
● It's relatively cheap.– No setup fee.– Billed by the hour.
But theres more...
● Amazon Machine Instances– A snapshot of a running server.
– Create a snapshot of a server
– Save it.
– Create some more servers just like that one.
● Install & Configure once and only once.– Launch as many servers as you can afford with that
configuration.
It's elastic because...
● Billing is by the hour (10c/hour = $72/month)● Server setup time = Server startup time.
– A traditional dedicated hosting plan can take a few hours for the providers to setup.
– Amazon EC2 setup time is as long as it takes to boot the machine
– (typically less than 3 minutes)
● It's automated – ( which means it's programmable )
What's it good for ?
● Plain old hosting.– Not recommended – servers are virtual and recently
some physical servers had to be decommissioned.
● Load Balancing.● Specialised CPU-intensive work.
