If you live in Maine, you know that most stories about the state’s weather just aren’t true. For if you have lived here, even for a short while, you can under-stand why Maine’s year-round climate, especially in coastal areas like the Southern Midcoast Maine Region, is such a well-kept secret.
With its four splendid seasons and Casco Bay on its doorstep, the region’s weather is often descried as “ideal”.
With an average low temperature of 10 degrees (F) in January, an average high temperature of 80 degrees (F) in July, and a wealth of sunny days throughout the year, the Southern Midcoast Maine Region offers a climate perfectly suited to a wide range of recreational activities.

Theater (Brunswick) produces non-equity community theater and musicals. The Orion Performing Arts Center (Topsham) hosts the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra, a 70-piece orchestra performing classical and modern works. Merrymeeting Arts Center (Bowdoinham) promotes egalitarianism, whimsy, envi-ronmental consciousness and diversity through its artists, programs and projects. The Center includes a permanent exhibit of sculptures by Bryce Muir.
Frontier Café Cinema and Gallery (Brunswick) provides a place for people to gather to enjoy and ex-plore film, food and art. The Dreamland Theater, located in the annex of Bath’s Winter Street Church, presents films weekly. The church is an historic property operated by Sagadahoc Preservation, Inc.
A Friday Night Art Walk is fun way to explore the downtowns of Bath, Brunswick and Topsham from May through October. The Walks take place on the second Friday in Brunswick and Topsham and on the third Friday in Bath, and they include access to artists’ studios, demonstra-tions, exhibits and artists’ receptions…at 40 to 50 creative venues!
History and MuseumsThe 16 communities of Southern Midcoast Maine are treasure troves of architectural gems and history from the 18th to the 21st centuries. Bath, the City of Ships, has walkable neighborhoods that provide an encyclopedia of architectural styles, especially along Washington and High Streets. Sagadahoc Preserva-tion, Inc., in Bath offers walking tours via Podcasts. Also in downtown Bath you can watch the progress of the reconstruction of the pinnace Virginia (1607), Maine’s First Ship. South of Bath’s downtown you’ll find the Maine Maritime Museum, offering year-round programs, galleries and exhibits on 25 scenic waterfront acres.
Wiscasset’s Musical Wonder House will have you marveling at its 5,000 music boxes, phonographs, clocks and more in an 1852 sea captain’s mansion. Known as “Maine’s Prettiest Village,” Wiscasset is also the home of Castle Tucker and Nickels-Sortwell House, both National Historic Landmarks. North of Wiscasset is Fort Edgecomb, site of action in the War of 1812.

In Brunswick visit the Pejepscot Museum featuring rotating exhibits exploring the history of Topsham, Harpswell and Brunswick. The Museum also offers walking tours. Two historic homes in Brunswick are
also part of the Museum. The Skolfield-Whittier House is a virtual time capsule of 19th and 20th century living by three generations of the same family. The Chamberlain House served from 1856 to 1914 as the home of Civil War General Joshua L. Chamber-lain, the hero of Little Round Top. It was also the home of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow during his years as a professor at Bowdoin College. The Bowdoin College Museum of Art is one of the finest
small museums in the United States. Bowdoin College is also home to the Peary-MacMillan Arctic Mu-seum, named for Bowdoin alumni and arctic explorers Robert Peary and Donald MacMillan.
Brunswick and Harpswell are home to two important bridges on the National Register of Historic Places. The Androscoggin Swing-ing Bridge, designed by the Roebling Company (c. 1892), is a pe-destrian bridge that connects Brunswick and Topsham. The Bailey Island Cribstone Bridge (c.1926) is a National Historic Civil En-gineering Landmark. The only bridge of its type in the world, the Cribstone Bridge links Orr’s Island and Bailey Island in Harpswell.
In Richmond visit the T.J. Southard House, one of the grandest homes on Main St. Imagine living in a rural farmhouse while you tour the 1810 farmhouse that comprises the Woolwich Historical Society. Take a scenic drive along Rt. 128 to the Dresden Brick School House Museum (c.1816). Then enjoy a picnic on the grounds of the only remaining pre-Revolutionary War court building in Maine, the Pownalborough Courthouse, a truly spectacular building.
LighthousesThe Kennebec River is a lighthouse lover’s dream. In Arrowsic visit Doubling Point Lighthouse (1898), the two Kennebec River Range Lights (1908), and Squirrel Point Light (1898). Pond Island Light
(1855) stands at the mouth of the Kennebec River, and two miles off the mouth of the River sits the Seguin Island Light Station and Museum. Commissioned by George Washington, this lighthouse is Maine’s tallest and second oldest light station. These lights and lighthouses are accessible via boat trips from Maine Maritime Museum or by private charter. The three light-houses in Arrowsic can also be reached by car from Route 127.

Recreation
Fore! Take a swing on a different course each day of the week – Bath Golf Club, Brunswick Golf Club, Country Fareways, Mere Creek Golf Course, Highland Green or Sebasco Harbor Resort. More details about each course can be found in the chart at the end of this Guide.
Cycling opportunities in the region are numerous. Follow the 2.5-mile Brunswick Bike Path for a family ride that winds along the An-droscoggin River. Mitchell Field, Rte. 123, Harpswell, has a 2-mile path for biking, walking, cross-country skiing, picnics and beach walks. On-road cyclists can enjoy scenic routes along winding rural roads and rolling hills. For a list of bike tours of Merrymeeting Bay and beaches, contact the Maine State Visitor Information Center at (207) 846-0833 to obtain a copy of Exploring Maine By Bike (www.exploremaine.org/bike).
Boating enthusiasts are sure to find pleasure when cruising or paddling our waters in sailboat, kayak or motorboat. We have numerous public boat landings for access (see centerfold map). Two bays and four major rivers, with more coastline than any other region of Maine, provide hours of exploration. The summer home of arctic explorer Robert E. Peary on Eagle Island, off the coast of Harpswell, is accessible June 15 through Labor Day via your own boat or tour boats from South Free-port, Dolphin Marina (Harpswell Neck) or Bailey Island. Sport fishing charters are available for a day of adventure. If you don’t have your own boat or kayak, try the companies listed in the chart at the end of this Guide.
Tennis lovers can pursue their sport at Maine Pines Racquet & Fitness in Brunswick or at numerous municipal courts in the region. Big pin bowling is a year-round pastime at Yankee Lanes in Bruns-wick. For a thrilling adventure, try the ropes and zip lines at Monkey C Monkey Do in Wiscasset.

Birding in the MidcoastWith many opportunities to watch a number of species, Southern Midcoast Maine is a haven for birds and birders alike.
Coastal species including grebes, loons and scoters can be seen at Reid State Park in Georgetown. You can also look for short-eared owls, purple sandpip-ers and wintering songbirds. The Park’s spruce forest, salt marsh and barrier beach are great locations for spotting your favorite species.
You’ll find migrating warblers, thrushes, tanagers and grosbeaks on Hermit Island in Phippsburg. Check the shore there for shorebirds and waterfowl, and the sky for migrating raptors. Or travel to Crystal Spring Farm in Brunswick with its variety of habitat including fields, forests and pond. You can hope to see swallows, sparrows, bluebirds, meadowlarks and several species of warblers.
Morse Mountain in Phippsburg is a great location to see many spring war-blers including black–throated green and northern parula, American red-start, and black and white, chestnut-sided and yellow warblers. Topsham’s Bradley Pond and Cathance River Nature Preserve provide a look at diverse migratory species in the spring. Harpswell and Phippsburg are home to osprey, herons and bald eagles soaring over the water. Watch a live video of osprey nesting at the Taste of Maine Restaurant, Route 1 in Woolwich. Visit www.tasteofmaine.com then click on the Osprey Cam tab.
Hamilton Sanctuary in West Bath, owned by Maine Audubon, is home to American woodcock and bobolinks in the spring. Red-winged blackbirds, gray catbird, song sparrows and flycatchers can be seen along the marsh edge. Merrymeeting Audubon, a chapter of Maine Audubon, offers programs and events year-round. For more information visit www.maineaudubon.org.
Other areas for bird watching include Swan Island in Richmond; Bailey Island, Upper Goose Island (great blue heron), and Basin Point in Harpswell; the river, estuary and mudflats of Merrymeeting Bay near Bowdoinham; and the salt marshes of Popham Beach State Park.
