WOSU Public Media Unveils New Statewide Alert System
WOSU on the Hill
WOSU hit Capitol Hill in early March to encourage continued federal support for public broadcasting. 15th District Congressman Steve Stivers took some time from a busy schedule to rush from the House floor at the Capitol for the meeting. WOSU also appreciated the time spent by 12th District Congressman Pat Tiberi and the Legislative Director for 3rd District Congresswoman Joyce Beatty to discuss WOSU’s many local initiatives.
Federal support for public broadcasting, which began 50 years ago with the Public Broadcasting Act, is the most effective public-private partnership in the country. It costs our citizens $1.35 each per year in taxes to support the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which distributes funds to individual public stations and supports special public service projects like the Ohio Emergency Alert System.
L to R: General Manager Tom Rieland, Congressman Steve Stivers, WOSU Friends Board Member and Past President Dale Heydlauff
The public television signals that blanket most of Ohio are now being used to send emergency alerts and messages statewide thanks to the leadership of WOSU Public Media. Dave Carwile, Senior Director for Planning and Initiatives at WOSU, led the statewide effort to receive a federal grant to make this new innovative model of emergency
messaging possible. State emergency agencies across the country are taking notice and a national magazine, TV Technology, recently profiled the project.
The alert system will provide a new technology backbone using what’s called datacast signals from public television transmitters to deliver vital emergency alerts and messaging to public safety officials. Ohio’s public broadcasters are partnering with the Ohio Emergency Management Agency and the statewide agency Ohio Broadcast Media Commission to get this done. This service is at the core of public broadcasting and speaks to WOSU Public Media’s mission to serve our communities and help keep the public safe today and into the future. It’s yet another reason we hope you continue to support WOSU!
OEAS Project Manager Dave Carwile of WOSU and WOSU-TV Chief Engineer Tim Kelly inspect the OEAS receiver setup.

All Sides with Ann Fisher is the only locally hosted, daily public affairs radio program that reaches on average, more than 39,000 listeners every week.(Nielsen Audio, 6+ Audience, Columbus DMA, July - Dec 2016)

You hear two new voices on 89.7 NPR News. Afternoon news host Clare Roth and reporter Adora Namigadde recently made their debuts and are settling in quite nicely in the WOSU newsroom.
Clare anchors afternoon newscasts and hosts All Things Considered (4-6pm) on 89.7. A graduate of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Clare comes to WOSU from Iowa Public Radio where she served as a talk show producer and host. But, what really caught the eye of WOSU was her stint as a copy editor and fact checker at The Onion. (Yes, the satirical website checks its facts.)
“I’m excited to share stories with WOSU listeners, to help them understand our city and its connection to the larger world,” Roth said.
Adora Namigadde is a native of suburban Detroit who last worked as a TV reporter in Traverse City, Michigan. She brings fresh curiosity and excellent multimedia skills to 89.7 NPR News and wosu.org. Adora earned her BA at Wayne State University where her professors named her Broadcast Journalism Student of the Year. She also served as an international observer during Ghana’s 2012 presidential elections. Adora is excited to live in the extremely diverse ‘small-big’ city of Columbus. “I look forward to reporting in-depth, well-researched stories in what is an interesting place to do journalism,” she said.
There is a new vibe in the WOSU newsroom these days. New perspectives and new voices are finding unique stories around central Ohio. They are helping us veterans discover innovative ways to tell stories on the air and online. WOSU listeners and users will benefit greatly from our changing newsroom for years to come.

Columbus Symphony returns to Classical 101 This month, broadcasts of the Columbus Symphony return to Classical 101 on Sunday afternoons at 1pm with host Christopher Purdy. The season starts off with a favorite: Verdi’s moving Requiem. Rossen Milanov leads the CSO and Chorus with soloists Michelle Johnson, Margaret Mezzacappa, Evan Johnson and Burak Bilgili. The hits continue on April 9th
with a Beethoven Marathon featuring Symphonies 2 and 4, as well as the exciting Triple Concerto with soloists Alicia Hui, Luis Biava, and Caroline Hong. April 16th highlights some of the last notes ever written by Mozart and Tchaikovsky, while the April 23rd broadcast is from Russian Winter Festival 1 with music by Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky. An All-Klezmer Showcase provides a lively change of pace on April 30th, when celebrated American clarinetist David Krakauer joins Rossen Milanov and the CSO. Enjoy your local symphony orchestra on your local classical station!
Thursday nights on Symphony at 7 this month, John Rittmeyer will have Gustav Mahler’s popular Symphony No. 4 featuring Dawn Upshaw in the final movement singing a child’s vision of heaven, Beethoven’s Eroica symphony
on period instruments, a rarely heard early symphony by Antonin Dvorak, and Mozart’s grandest symphony, Jupiter.
And don’t forget to check out our newest offering, Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlin, every weeknight at 6pm. We’re eager to hear how you like the program!
