INTRODUCTION to theAELCLIC project
AELCLIC_PATHFINDER_in a Nutshell
NEED: Concerning Climate Change adaptation, there is a need to align agendas and visions of the
different types of stakeholders involved in the management and transformation of the landscape, both in rural and urban areas as well as in transitional spaces.
GOAL: The AELCLIC-PATHFINDER would define and test MODELS for the configuration of regional/local
(bottom-up) networks with the social, financial, administrative and technical capacity to co -define Landscape Adaptation Plans to Climate Change (LACAPs).
OUTCOME & METHOD: The final outcome of the AELCLIC-PATHFINDER would be a set of
regional/local Consortia in a strategically selected set of 16 European Pilot Landscapes that have been chosen in order to cover the climatic, socio-economic, cultural and biogeographical diversity of Europe and in order to produce highly transferable and scalable models.
USERS: The final users of the models and results will be firstly the regional/local communities where the
Consortia will been defined as a result of the AELCLIC-PATHFINDER.

The Old Malmi AELCLIC pilot-landscape includes a consolidated but developing urban area around the old Malmi railway station. According to the strategy, visions and guidelines of City of Helsinki, this area will acquire new and multiple functions and will catalyze the transformation of the Malmi district. The AELCLIC project will add the Climate Change Adaption layer to the coming plans. The area covers 25 ha approx.
In this context, the AELCLIC project is perceived as an opportunity to add the Climate Change Adaptation layer in the Malmi District Center Vision and to
apply in a concrete site the principles and guidelines of the Helsinki Climate Change Adaptation Programme.
In addition, since the AELCLIC project is based in the deep collaboration between economic, social, governmental and academic actors (co-definit ion of work
plans, co-identif ication of impacts/opportunities and co -delineation of contents of a LACAP), the project will provide a the pos sibil ity to integrate top-down
and bottom-up approaches.

HOW CAN CLIMATE CHANGE AFFECT MALMI AND YOUR DAILY LIFE ?
CLIMATE CHANGE• Decrease in indoor temperatures• Global consequences of weather phenomena• Extreme weather phenomena are increasing• Rainwater and snow• Climate change will have many effects: rainfall will increase, winter time will become darker and summer heat waves will increase.
Especially the rainy, dark winter is a challenge that may change the landscape of Malmi. Slippery will increase, which will affect the safety of the movement

area (from the 1910s to the 1934 recession). Now we should create a renewed garden city concept, which will made possible by the release of an airport area into a residential area

Energiantuotanto ja infrastruktuuri
• Pakkasen, jään ja tulvien aiheuttamat vahingot esim. sillat, putket, vesivoima, sähköverkot jne. • Vaikutukset energianlähteisiin vaihtelevat, osa herkempiä kuin toiset
• Yleisesti ottaen uusiutuva energia voi olla vieläkin alttiimpi ilmastonmuutokselle kuin fossiiliset energiavarat, koska se on riippuvaisempi säästä ja ilmastosta
• Toisaalta uusiutuva energia lisää kuitenkin energian toimitusvarmuutta, koska se on tyypillisesti saatavilla paikan päällä
Maa- ja metsätalous
• Lämpötilojen noustessa pohjoisen maatalouden merkitys kasvaa• Kasvien talvehtimis- ja kasvuolosuhteet muuttuvat – kasvintuotanto tärkeässä roolissa sopeutumisessa
ilmastonmuutokseen, uusia viljelykasveja kasvuolosuhteiden muuttuessa • Toisaalta kuivuminen/märkyys vaikeuttaa maanviljelyä• Taudit ja tuhohyönteiset, vieralajit• lämpötilan kohotessa metsien kasvu voi lisääntyä ja metsät voivat levitä pohjoiseen • talvilämpötilojen vaihtelut voivat heikentää taimien kasvua ja niiden selviytymistä ja toisaalta märät talvet
