JANUARY 8 2017mdashFEAST OF THE EPIPHANY
This week The Feast of the Epiphany
Isaiah 601-6 Ephesians 32-3a 5-6 Matthew 21-12
Background This is the final reading of our Christmas cycle next week we return to ordinary time Today however we have Matthewrsquos
critical story of the Magirsquos visit to the Christ Child having been led by the star The key to this passage is the fact that the magi come from ldquothe eastrdquo
and thus are not Jews They worship the Christ and give him their gifts while King Herod and ldquoall of Jerusalemrdquo those with the benefit of the
scriptures reject him This will be the story of the Gospel of Matthew and to an extend that of Matthewrsquos community The magi represent all the Gentile converts to the faith who are being led to Christ by God even
though many of the Jewish faith are not coming to him and some are even persecuting those who come
Next Week Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Isaiah 49 35-6 1 Corinthians 11-3 John 129-34
