The Tri-County Economic Development Corporation (Northern Kentucky Tri-ED) serves Boone, Campbell and Kenton counties in Northern Kentucky, within the Cincinnati MSA, and is responsible for:
Kris Knochlemann, Judge-Executive, Kenton County
We are pleased to present Northern Kentucky Tri-ED’s 2014 Annual Report. More than 2,200 new jobs were announced from 15 existing companies and eight new companies with nearly $224 million in capital investment. In addition, more than 40 entrepreneurs were connect to critical resources and corporate and civic partners assisted in raising over $3 million in new capital for local entrepreneurs.
It was a standout year for collaborative initiatives. Partners from across the state joined the Northern Kentucky ezone in advocating for the Individual Angel Tax Credit, which was enacted by the Kentucky General Assembly in 2014, increasing the pool of capital for entrepreneurs. In addition, the Advanced Manufacturing Workforce Development Coalition and the Northern Kentucky Chapter of Kentucky FAME (Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education) were formed to help enhance the talent supply chain for manufacturers in Northern Kentucky.
Although 2014 was a productive year, the gains were tempered by announcements from Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc. and Fidelity Investments that jobs will be moved out of the region in 2016. We know that Northern Kentucky will depend upon Tri-ED to work diligently to replace these jobs.
We thank our partners and allies for supporting economic growth and development in Northern Kentucky. Successful economic development is a team effort and we will work with you to enhance our global economy and provide a world of opportunities for our communities, businesses and families!

BY THE NUMBERS
“The daily back-ups turning onto I-275 West from KY 237 North were very bad in the evening due to the dramatic increase in automobile and truck traffic from nearby companies. Our employees could not get through this area efficiently and, more importantly, safely. We shared our concern with TriED and they took the lead in alleviating the issue, ensuring a win-win for all involved.”

Through coordinated visits with industry representatives,
Northern Kentucky Tri-ED helps address challenges local
companies are experiencing and identify opportunities for
business expansion and job growth.
Throughout 2014, Tri-ED continued to establish NKY Boost
as the regional “one-stop shop” for existing primary industry.
In addition to expediting expansions, companies relied
on NKY Boost to assist with removing barriers to growth.
Specifically, Tri-ED helped facilitate solutions with respect to
transportation, infrastructure, and workforce.
2014 NKY Boost HighlightsTransportation: Employees had trouble getting to work at
eBay due to existing bus service schedules. Tri-ED worked
with TANK and eBay to partner on a pilot route through the
holiday season to provide ample transportation.
Infrastructure: Traffic patterns on KY 237 made it difficult
to get people and goods onto I-275, especially during rush
hour. Tri-ED worked with Boone County and KYTC District 6
to install a traffic light at the intersection.
Workforce: Through NKY Boost, Tri-ED identified the
availability of skilled workforce as the most important
challenge related to ongoing success in the recruitment and
retention of primary industry jobs in Northern Kentucky.
In 2014, Tri-ED moved from viewing workforce as a
challenge to an opportunity by dedicating time, resources,
support and leadership towards the joint development
of a Workforce Coalition, establishment of the Northern
Kentucky FAME apprenticeship program and obtaining Work
Ready Community designation by the State of Kentucky.
Additional details are provided on the following pages.
NKY Boost is Northern Kentucky Tri-ED’s business retention and expansion (BR&E) program. It is a free resource connecting Northern Kentucky primary industries with solutions to help sustain operations and grow jobs in the region.

Development and the Kentucky Community & Technical
College System to formally launch the Northern Kentucky
Chapter of the Federation for Advanced Manufacturing
Education (FAME). NKY FAME offers students and veterans
the opportunity to apply for an Advanced Manufacturing
Technician (AMT) apprenticeship program, which
provides hands-on training at a manufacturing facility,
classroom instruction and access to high-paying advanced
manufacturing careers.
FAME builds on a program started by Toyota Motor
Manufacturing Kentucky in Georgetown. Manufacturers in
the Northern Kentucky Chapter include:
• Hahn Automation
• Linamar
• L’Oréal
• Mubea
• SAFRAN (Messier-Bugatti-Dowty)
• Stöber
• Wagstaff
• ZF Steering Systems, LLC
Work Ready CommunitiesIn 2014, Boone, Campbell, and Kenton counties were
certified as Work Read Communities. This certification
demonstrates that these communities meet metrics
in the following areas: high school graduation rates,
number of National Career Readiness Certificate holders,
demonstrated community commitment, Internet availability
and soft skills development.
The certification program was created by the Kentucky
Workforce Investment Board (KWIB) and the Kentucky
Education & Workforce Development Cabinet to assure
employers that a local workforce has the talent and skills
necessary to staff existing jobs and to master the innovative
technologies new jobs will require.
“I’m confident this AMT apprenticeship program will provide real solutions to the workforce challenges facing our local manufacturers and provide a strong career path for our students.”

Kentucky’s economic development strategy.
UpTechUpTech announced its third class of startups, each
receiving up to $50,000 in funding, office space, and
mentors during the six-month program. In 2014, the Small
