Dental Caries or Tooth Decay

Tooth decay, known technically as dentalcaries, is one of the most common health
complaints in the world.
It is particularly common in children and
young adults, and rates have been fuelled
by an increase in sugars in the diet, andpoor dental hygiene.
Each time a child drinks liquids containing
sugar, acids attack the teeth for about 20
minutes. When awake, saliva carries awaythe liquid. During sleep, the saliva flowsignificantly decreases and liquids pool
around the childs teeth for long periods,
covering the teeth in acids.

First decay stage
A brown area is the first sign of tooth decay.
Sometimes a white area appears. This isdiscernible to a dentist only. At times a shadowor an area of lesser density is visible in an x-rayimage. The decay in the first stage can bequickly halted or reversed.
Cavity Formation
The tooth is infected by the bacteria. Thebacteria penetrate the enamel to form a cavityThe process takes place in about 3-4 years. At
this stage the tooth is unable to repair itself. The mineral cells and living cells in dentin areexposed to the bacteria. Your tooth becomessensitive to hot, cold or sweet food and may beassociated with mild pain also.

How to avoid tooth decay?
Brush daily - following each feeding, wipe your baby's gums with a
clean soft cloth. Begin brushing your child's teeth as soon as thefirst tooth erupts. You can begin flossing once all the baby teeth
have erupted by around 2-3 years old. Most dentists recommend
to clean your teeth at least twice a day. Using a toothpaste with
fluoride is a good idea as this provides the teeth with added
protection from the effects of acid.
Baby Bottles - Never allow your child to fall asleep with a bottle
containing milk, formula, fruit juice or sweetened liqued.

six months after the eruption of their first tooth. This will
provide a time to discuss all dental health issues with mumand dad such as the role of bacteria; nutrition; bottle and
breast feeding; use of a cup; and home care., is the single
most effective act to build good relationships and maintain
