Archives Aches and Pains?Aches and Pains?
There’s an app for that. There’s an app for that. Weighing around 1.33 pounds, the Apple iPad 2 is lighter than most medical charts yet is proving a hefty value to many hospitals around the United States. The device is known for its ability to provide instant access to numerous apps that run the spectrum of interests, and it is increasingly providing tools for physicians and other medical professionals to enhance the care they give. Some hospitals have installed kiosks available to patients, visitors, and staff to look up information or for medical staff to use as diagnostic aids. Other facilities are going a step further and enabling providers to access up-to-date clinical information prior to and during patient encounters through the iPad. The attraction to this device is growing due to the greater portability and increased battery life they feature as opposed to tablet PCs. The most noted disadvantage for many hospitals isn’t cost, but rather difficulty finding a way to keep them inside the hospital. Since the device was produced by Apple as a consumer item, the company is working on ways to update its design to meet the demand for use in health care, including strengthening administrative rights. Apps are increasingly being developed with both the patient and provider in
mind. One app created by Ottawa Hospital in Ontario, Canada, is useful in pain management, providing a map of the human body that allows patients to point to and illustrate, using detailed diagrams and a grid system, the intensity of their pain. In the past months, Apple announced the top five medical apps for iPads and iPhones. 1. Airstrip Cardiology, by AirStrip Technologies, enables providers to review a patient’s ECG history almost instantly following the administration of the test. 2. Skeletal System Pro III, by 3D4Medical.com, is primarily a reference and identification tool that provides detailed areas of bone systems to assist with explaining conditions, ailments, and injuries to patients. 3. EyeDecide MD, free from Orca Health, is an educational tool that uses annotations and medical images specific to each eye condition. 4. Mobile MIM, free from MIM Software Inc., is used for viewing, registering, and displaying a range of medical images, including SPECT, MRI, x-ray, and ultrasound. 5. VueMe, free from MIM Software Inc., is intended for non-diagnostic viewing of medical images.

Are you
retirement ready?
There are countless books, numerous online
resources, and an explosion of companies ready
and willing to help with retirement financial
planning. The financial aspects of retirement,
while important, are only part of the equation.
Emotional preparation and planning for this major
life transition is as important as financial planning
for retirement. Until you know what you want to
do and the person you want to be in retirement,
the pieces of your new life in retirement won't
fit. All of the financial planning in the world won't
prepare you fully for life changes linked to the
retirement transition -- or for the unexpected.
Perhaps the most important major adjustment in
retirement is: to live fully with what is.
Since its inception, the HealthQuest Employee
Assistance Program (EAP) has helped many State
of Kansas employees with major life transitions.

becoming retirement ready, click here.
iPad Fun Fact When the iPad was launched in April 2010, Apple sold
three million of the devices in the 80 days following
the release.
Congratulations!

Dean’s Update
Dean Wilson will deliver
his quarterly update on
the medical school
today, May 16, in
Roberts Amphitheater.
Please plan to attend if
possible. Refreshments
will be provided. If you are unable to attend or would
like to listen to the update again, an audio recording
and PowerPoint presentation will be available online.
iPad Fun Facts Apple’s first tablet computer was the Newton
MessagePad 100, introduced in 1993. Mostly
referred to as “Apple’s tablet,” iTablet and iSlate
were speculated names for what was released as
the iPad.
The iPad was developed prior to the iPhone, but
when Apple realized the device would work just as
well as a mobile phone, further development was
delayed so the iPhone could be developed and
launched first.

Jennifer Steinkamp Kara Visokey
Sr. Coordinator Coordinator
WCGME WCGME
Jennifer and Kara went above and beyond in helping a co‑worker! They both were a huge help in putting
together a filing cabinet for my office. A project that we figured would not take that long turned into quite the
undertaking! I can't thank them enough for all their help and their positive attitudes! Even while wanting to
throw the filing cabinet out the window they had smiles on their faces!
Nominated by Amanda May, WCGME
Page 4
How long have you worked at KUSM–W, and what was your job before
you came here? I have worked here for 10 months. Before this position, I spent 12 years with
Wichita Public Schools. I spent most of that time as Director of Marketing and
Community Relations for Wichita Area Technical College and a few years as an
MTSS Family Engagement Facilitator.
What are your job responsibilities and what do you like most about your
job? I develop marketing plans, design marketing material, and update social media sites
for the programs and services offered by Rural Health Education and Services.
Tell us about your top 5 Strengths. Activator, Communication, Individualization, Relator, and Responsibility
I think that the activator strength is one of my more dominant strengths. I have
always had a tendency to want to immediately start a project that I’ve just had a
meeting about. The description also says that those with the activator strength are
often impatient and that would be true for me as well.
What do you do in your spare time? Watch my kids play sports, read, organize, decorate, create digital scrapbooks, and
spend time with family, friends, and neighbors.
What’s a favorite movie and/or book? I really enjoyed reading and watching “The Hunger Games.” I have read a lot of
great books, but one that I’ll never forget is “Still Alice.”
Who is your hero or the person you most admire and why? This question is always a tough one for me because I admire different people at
different times, but it’s always because of their strength and character and how
they graciously handle themselves during adversity.

Match a Maple!
The AIDS
Memorial Garden
is in need of some
help. It has moved
three times since
1997 with its final
resting spot
located on the
Wichita Campus
adjacent to the
parking lot on the northeast side of the complex.
The AIDS Memorial Garden was designed to
remember someone special with an engraved brick.
Bricks have been purchased for those who have died
from AIDS or those who have been instrumental in
the fight against the disease.
The hope is to beautify the area with trees, bushes,
and plants to create a respite spot for anyone,
including anyone who works at KUSM–W. The
bricks are in place, tulips and hostas are planted, but
so much more needs to be done to improve the
area.
Dr. Donna Sweet has agreed to buy some Japanese
maples for the area and we are asking for
contributions from others to help the cause. We
are looking to add several large holly bushes which
cost almost $100 each. We also want to add some
other plants to the area to make it much more
inviting. If you are willing to contribute, contact
Michael Madecky at 293-3405 or
iPad Fun Facts On May 28, 2010, the iPad was released in
Australia, Canada, and Japan, as well as several
larger European countries.
The iPad’s base model’s price of $499 was lower
than pre-release estimates by the tech press,
Wall Street analysts, and Apple’s competitors, all
of whom were expecting a much higher entry
price point.

Jennifer Collins, Psychiatry &
Behavioral Sciences, volunteers for
many organizations through the
Young Professionals of Wichita.
Young Professionals of Wichita is a
membership-based organization
geared toward recruiting and
retaining young talent in Wichita. YPW’s goals
include creating professional and social diversity,
increasing the quality of life for young professionals,
growing the next generation of leaders, and
establishing a collective voice for YPs.
Jennifer is the Vice Chair of the Community
Relations Action Team of Young Professionals of
Wichita. The Community Relations Action Team
fosters a connection between YPs and non-profits in
the area to provide YPs the opportunity to give back
to their community. The team highlights volunteer
opportunities within non-profits in the area, as well
as the non-profit organizations themselves. The
team also develops an annual community service
project that allows YPs the opportunity to become
involved in community improvement, as well as
creating a sense of ownership and pride in Wichita.
Jennifer says that many young professionals have
found that it takes more than a rewarding career to
be fulfilled in their lives and that this is certainly true
for her. Before joining YPW, she looked for ways to
volunteer and give back to the community, but was
overwhelmed looking for opportunities that fit her
work schedule and were a good fit for her. Sitting
on the Community Relations Action Team for YPW
has provided an avenue to reach out to more
volunteer opportunities than she would have been
able to on her own, and allows her to help other
YPs do the same.
Throughout her past three years of membership
with YPW, Jennifer has volunteered for many
organizations, including Exploration Place, Youthville,
Red Cross, American Lung Association, Hospitals of
Hope, Race for the Cure, Operation Holiday, and
YPW’s annual community service project, Enhance.
Her favorite time of year to volunteer is around
Christmas. As a child, Christmas was always a
magical time for Jennifer, and she enjoys
volunteering for organizations that help to make that
magic happen for other children. Her favorite event
is helping to sort gifts that are donated to Youthville.
Seeing the generosity of our community brings back
some of the magic of the season for her.
If you are a young professional and looking for ways
to be involved, Jennifer would love to visit with you.
YPW offers many avenues of volunteer
opportunities, whether you are looking to commit
to just an hour here or there, or something longer
term. YPW membership is not required to attend
any of the events! Upcoming volunteer
opportunities include:
June 16 – Enhance: Annual Community
Service Project
Join YPW to provide property improvements to
owner occupied residences and publicly owned
property, as well as a neighborhood block party for
the kids! It will be in the area north of North High.
September (date TBA) – Big for a Day with
Big Brothers Big Sisters
YPs will be matched with Littles based on combined
interests and desired time commitment. Being a Big
can be tailored to your schedule, so don’t let your
hectic calendar deter you from being a powerful
positive mentor in a child’s life.
