Aging-In-Place &
Universal Design
before
What is Universal Design and Aging In Place?
AARP reports that 90 percent of seniors want to stay in their own homes as
long as possible — including 82 percent who want to stay there even if they
need day-to-day assistance or ongoing health care — after retirement.
Universal Design
• Products & environments to be used by all, regardless of age and ability
• Ex. Sidewalk ramps, kitchen counters of varying heights
Aging-in-Place
• Ability to live in one’s
own home for as long as
possible
• Includes UD, health and
wellness monitoring and
more.
Examples of Aging in Place
[From http://aginginplace.com/mini-2/aging-in-place-3-scenarios/]
1. Aging in place without urgent needs.
2. Aging in place with progressive Condition-based
needs.
3. Aging in place with traumatic change needs.
